Capturing the random
Generative type of sequencers can be good, but also really bad too. A way around that is to send them to MIDI to capture the output, then pick and choose what elements you like.
Great combo to use is Drambo MIDI inside AUM, like this:
- Put Drambo and a generative sequencer (Rozeta Particles, TATAT, etc.) on a MIDI channel in AUM
- Route the sequencer to Drambo
- Set the pattern in Drambo to full length
- Arm Drambo to record
- Route Drambo to a synth on an audio channel in AUM
- Hit play in AUM
- Record to end
- And another “scene” in Drambo to easily record another pattern, perhaps with adjustments to the generative sequencer as desired
- Edit the patterns as desired, picking the good parts
Drambo makes it really easy, with the ability to sync to host and add scenes quickly. Obviously other MIDI recording apps could work too.

As a fellow worshipper at the shrine of the Goddess Random: Even easier, my preferred method: use whatever generators you like, and add in as many Atom 2 instances as you need ‘shadowing’ the output, extended out to as many bars as you need. Makes it dead easy to non destructively snip, cut, repitch, retempo, add in probabilities etc, then use the Atoms to drive whatever you like.
For midi looping on the fly streambyter has a script ‘nimble looper’ iirc…
The cool thing about all of this is we have many options. Really liked this drambo + aum workflow.
I'm currently using LK a lot as my midi recorder / editing. Sometime I like using Xequence too
I do this a lot when working with generative midi, not exactly the same process but I like to mess with the actual midi stream in various ways, and/or record the midi in something like Atom 2/Helium/LK/X2 then chop up the best bits into something better.
I wish there was more tutorial videos on Drambo showing usage ideas like this, can never seem to find much on YouTube. It seems like a super cool very flexible workspace, but it can also feel quite impenetrable at times, especially to new users. Thanks for the AUM / Drambo trick, I might try that out some time.
