BA-1 by Baby Audio iOS / Desktop | Walkthrough, Demo, Review & Giveaway

BA-1 by Baby Audio iOS / Desktop | Walkthrough, Demo, Review & MAYBE a Giveaway

I have been VERY pleasantly surprised by how much I like this new BA-1 synth from Baby Audio, which just became available for iOS. It sounds truly fantastic and is incredibly intuitive. A brilliant synth for beginners or for anyone who likes lovely vintage 80s sounds. There are a few things about it I am not so crazy about and I cover them in the review section of the video.

This video has timestamps by the way.

First I do a brief introduction to the app, then a detailed walkthrough of the interface, commenting on the pros and cons as I go, demoing some presets along the way, and finally finish with a review of the things I like about the app and the areas where I feel there is room for improvement.

❇️GIVEAWAY: 3 copies of ANY iOS app by Baby Audio to give away. Details in the pinned YT comment.

My Magic Fusion vid still has an open giveaway - you will also find a link to that in the pinned comment

Please help support my hard work by not watching behind an ad blocker, thanks 🙏

I'll do my best, apparently embedded YouTube videos automatically skip the adds so I had to open it in a new window :sunglasses:

Appreciated Samu! I think for anyone on the fence, btw, this video will be very useful. This is up your street I reckon, despite the weaknesses, am I right?

I'll have to wait and see honestly as the UI with small font-sizes really, I mean really irk me...
...and I can't see any traces of Midi CC learn in the iOS/iPad version?!

In all fairness I'm in no rush to get it and will give lady-luck an opportunity to shine in my direction as I suspect there will be plenty of give-away opportunities popping up :sunglasses:

  • Yeah those fonts are really an issue they need to work on if they're porting to ios.

No midi learn but parameters are exposed. So the desktop one has midi learn? Mmm

Yepp, the desktop version has Midi Learn (CC button in the plug-in window).

But sure, it's not 'essential' for me as I seldom use any external controllers...
...just my trusty CME XKey 25 when I need physical keys to bang on.

I wonder if that is an oversight or intentional omission. Have you emailed them?

Don't have the app yet but I may do so if I manage to win it from any of the give-aways...

This as I'm trying to 'slim down' my app-flora and thankfully Logic Pro for iPad is making that task quite enjoyable.
(I've finally 'landed' on an iPad host that does NOT 'stress me up' causing my BP sky-rocket thru the roof and I feel super 'calm' when using it...).

It's amazing feeling when all the 'guesswork' is gone and all installed apps feel like well behaved individuals :sunglasses:

Glad you feel that way - as we have seen, others may beg to differ lol!

  • Just to update, that Baby Audio confirmed a giveaway for 3 copies of any Baby Audio iOS app - details, as usual, in the pinned YT comment

If people could watch at least one or two skippable ads for 30 seconds it would really help. I've been busting my balls recently, but youtube income for the month remains around $140. A major factor there is that so many watch behind adblockers

That sucks :( I have YouTube premium so I guess I have to trust that YouTube will share that profit with you. Really appreciate all you do for the community 🙏

A share of YT premium does go to youtubers, yes, so don't worry. I think YT premium is a great solution for those who don't want ads but also want monetized creators to get a share of the income they're entitled to for their labour.

    Exactly. I’m glad they’re actually doing a good job of dispersing that. I think I heard it’s a 60/40 split but I can’t remember?

  • It's also pretty shocking how many people think that youtubers still get an affiliate commission when people click appstore links in their vids. I did a recent poll on youtube that got over 100 responses, and 20% wrongly think that music youtubers earn by clicking on their links. This is most likely due to having watched old vids from Doug, Jakob etc encouraging people to click their links to help the channel. As probably almost everyone here knows, Apple abolished affiliate commissions years ago.

Wonder what made them do that? I remember hearing Doug talk about it when it first happened.

Something like that I think, anyway, it's better than nothing I guess haha. They do screw you on the super thanks though by the way - they take a whopping 30% on those, so anyone who wants to support a creator is better using PayPal or whatever other means the particular youtuber uses to receive donations.

I guess they just realised the appstore had no real competition and they didn't need to offer affiliate links. Understandable, I guess but pretty traumatic for people like Doug who had based their livelihood around it. Must have made a really significant difference to youtubers earnings.

Woah I thought 100% of the super thanks went to the creator. I didn’t know that at all. That’s…..not great 😬

Exactly. I’m sure it hurt their livelihoods quite a bit since who knows how many people Doug inspired to buy apps.

  • It also gave people a way to feel they were supporting even if they didn't watch ads. That's no longer the case. Winners picked btw! Names in pinned YT comment, I am in mad hurry right now, no time to find and post here

By the way Doug / Jo @thesoundtestroom, not sure how, but this thread somehow seems to be listed under Logic Pro, would you mind moving it to general app discussion when you have time? Thnx!

  • Congrats to the winners, apparently 'Lady Luck' has left me for good as I've not won anything in the past year or so :sunglasses:
