Advice (&poll) on buying a used iPad (and pricing) ? (in EU,)

edited June 2023 in Other

Hi ,
I'm looking to replace my old Air2 since it's struggling with modern multiple AUs.
I saw a used pro 11" with M1 including some extras for 670 but it was sold quickly
It gave me time to think that I may need a 12.9" ipad for working with DAW since the days with fullscreen apps and switching i, belong to the past

I found some 2018 and 2020 models and saw there are little differences between them . Especially the older 2018 with 1Tera has the same RAM (6G) , I don't mind the better gpu/camera on 2020 , maybe the wifi .

  1. Are there real differences between wifi performance ? (wifi5 vs wifi6)
  2. If they where on the same price , a 2018 with 1T vs 2020 with 256g , which one would you choose?
  3. What do you think the recommended "nice" price should be ? ( not talking "bargain" prices , but descent priced)
  4. Should I look a modern iPad instead with less storage and smaller screen ? (although the storage on 64G Air M1 ipads isn't enough for me , I've maxed out the old 64G Air2)

Any advice is welcomed :)

Help me choose :)
  1. Which iPad?6 votes
    1. 3d gen Pro 2018 12.9" 1Tera (A12Z cpu , 6G ram)
      16.67%
    2. 5th gen Pro 2021 11" 128G (M1 cpu , 8G ram)
      83.33%

  • It depends on your usage case. If you use a lot of softsynths rather than samplers you’ll need a good CPU. Something like an M1. If you need a lot samples the you’d prioritise something with a lot if storage

I was about to buy an iPad Air 5 64 GB refurbished for 519€. But then i found out the iPad Pros 120Hz screen is much more enjoyable to use. But the cheapest refurbished Pro will cost me 699€... so i am back to brainstorming 😅

699€ which generation and with how much storage ?

  • Get the most recent model, with as much memory/storage as you can afford. As far as wifi only versus wifi+cellular goes, that's a personal decision. I long ago had a model with cellular, but I never activated it and never needed to use it. Wifi-only has been the right decision for me.

lol , this is what I plan to do

Not interested on cellular , a smart phone is more flexible as hotspot since you can leave it on a place where the signal is stronger . My only concern is if WiFi6 is noticeably better than WiFi5

That's with M1 cpu , it will last many years in terms of performance

As recent as possible, as new iOS updates come out eventually device will not be able to update anymore. It takes awhile but definitely something to keep in mind, since you don’t want to buy one to far back, then you can’t update anymore in 2 years or whatever. highest Chip possible, ie A14. The more internal storage space the better. The more screen size the better, some apps are highly detailed, some sessions get big, the more you can fit on screen, the better you can interact with it, the better off you will be for music. On the Apple website and a few other places you can compare the specs of 2 models side by side to see what if any are the exact differences between the 2. The cores are important too. Decide Wi-Fi only or 5g and WiFi. The 5 g and Wi-Fi will include a monthly cellular plan and cost more up front, compared to Wi-Fi only. 95% of the time Wi-Fi only is perfect for me. I have Wi-Fi at home, connect to friends network when they’re, or even use phone as a hot spot if absolutely necessary. The majority of music apps work offline anyway. Unless you are buying an IAP or updating something. A few need it, but most music apps don’t.

  • On all my Apple device purchases, I’ve waited for the newest model to drop, then I buy the previous model, 1 year old at a great price. This is for brand new stuff though…

    So, between a:

    iPad Pro 11 with M1 and 128G
    vs
    iPad Pro 12,9 with A12X and 1Tera

which on would you choose ?

that chip is beast.. unless you want to draw images or edit videoa (where bigger screen my be good) just for music apps 11" is totally ok...

Added a poll (which I accidentally deleted :D ,but it's ok now ) , thanks for the feedback :)
My only concern is that I plan to replace my laptop and the 12.9" screen with 120Hz is tempting for non audio stuff

Honestly i have iPad Air M1 and screen is perfect .. do not feel any discomfort whatsoever even when i use it for long time .. to me this 120Hz things looks more like placebo than something with real impact for everyday use :))))

  • If I had to choose one of those two I’d probably go for the 11”. Only having storage of 128GB would be too little for me though, so I would personally look again for additional options. :)

Unfortunately I'm already above my budget :(

  • Get a new one , just a regular one in case you don’t have warranty. (My opinion)

A new one is expensive (but has warranty) , I was aiming at 450€ but by selling few stuff I can go around ~600€ max
Ony ipad at this price (new) , is the basic ipad 2021 256G , but I don't think it's worth the price

If you buy from an established Refurbish Seller you usually get warranty from 12 months up... most have regularly sale discounts too... if you dont like it you can send it back
