Nanostudio 2 Scale lock in piano roll?

Hi guys,

Is there a way to scale lock in the piano roll in NS2? like the same way you would in keyboard mode? I can’t seem to work out if there is such a function. As usual it is probably glaringly if someone could point it out it would be much appreciated.

  • unforunstelly no, it is not .. one of features i am missing a lot :-(

what i do is i record all notes from scale, then place them at the end of pattern outdide played area and use them as “guideline” …

like this, minor pentatonic here :-)

  • ah that’s a real shame. Hopefully this is something that will be added soon as it doesn’t really make sense to leave it out. Thanks for the tip tho!

Don’t count on it - the developer of Nanostudio has stopped develop NS2, but, we hopefully will get critical updates if upgrades on the operating system will affect NS2…

unfortunately i would’t bet on any future update except of emergency fixes if apple breaks something.. Developer made statement long time ago on official forum that he cannot do active developemnt anymore, because of low income from app sales he was forced to get full time job …

There is a way, it’s a bit different. You can choose which type of scale (major, minor, etc) and then transpose to root key of yo ur choice. Open an instrument, then click the little arrow on the keyboard header where it says scale and transpose. Works exactly the same as scale lock in anything else, just unfortunately a two step process (scale select, then transpose)

not sure what you mean with mess … as i said i place them outside of area where are actuall notes and i use them just as guideline when drawing new and dragging existing notes…

here video how i use them

thanks :) it's no big deal, just simple hack .. this is what i love on NS - even through there are some missing features, the way how is whole UI designed allows to do a lot of such simple hacks in fast way, where you don't even think a much about it, you just go on autopilot using muscle memory .. it makes life much easier ..

also preparing those "guideline notes" is pretty fast - cause of my lazyness to move and align them all manually i just quickly record one octave, then select them and use Actions > Quantize and first quatize START to 1 bar and then quantize END to 1 bar - which is feq fast taps using mucle memory which in most cases makes them all same length starting on same point .. then eventually just select them all and shorten and move after active pattern area ... few taps, done.. sometimes i put that faw more scales one a fter other if i want combine more scales in pattern .. (or build chords which are combining notes from multiple scales)

This is genius - but also the exact opposite of what I would expect a developer like yourself to do. 😉

I mean the usual developer approach would be "I write some code once so I don't have to manually repeat a task multiple times". You could also apply it here by learning scales once, instead doing this lengthy manual gold digging every single time. But I'm guessing it's part of the fun...👊

No i am just lazy as fuck to learn it :-))

Also when i do music, i doesn’t want to do anything which even remotely resembles “learning” (i mesn memorising stuff) - i use brain too much during work, purpose of doing music is turn off brain 😂

Of course i do not always draw all melodies that way :-) That was just for purpose of showing the point .. in most cases i just record basic stuff and use this “helper” just for finetuning recorded material here and there
