I’m going to have to get an actual Melodica: There Is A Sickness At The Heart Of Everything
“I and my companions suffer from a disease of the heart, which can be cured only with gold.” - attributed to Hernan Cortes, destroyer of the Aztec civilisation, and harbinger of the modern age.
What can I tell you? I don’t like Mondays.
I don’t have the technical chops to play with dissonance the way @LinearLineman can, but there was something about the wonky, bent out of shape noise I got from the aPolyvoks at the start of making this that made me want to continue with something ramshackle and… off. It felt wrong. It felt like Monday.
Drums by Hammerhead and Drum Jam, Bass by Model 15, guitar by Steelguitar Pro and Strummer FX, weirdness by aPolyvoks and a lorra lorra FX. Sequencing by SnakeBud and midiDREAMs, breathing spaces by Gatelab and midiGATEs.
Starring role here to my fave melodica app: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/melodica/id437035836
I really should get a real one. Such a beautiful, plaintive thing. I fell in love with the sound circa 1986, at campus dub reggae nights, listening to Augustus Pablo do amazing things with just a chord or two and a ton of delay.

I just acquired one!
My wife’s grandfather was a professional swing musician before WWII (after the war, he became the front man for a mob-run casino in the Bahamas)
Anyway…
we were recently going through her parents’ attic. Her brother had already taken his sax, and her sister the clarinet. However, my wife found this long flat Hohner case…ta da! They are lots of fun.
Unfortunately, I still haven’t found the captured Luger and armband taken from a dead man…
This sounds great, by the way!
Nice work.

@JeffChasteen : Thank you! You might have a real find there. As I started to check out melodicas online it quickly became apparent that vintage Hohners hold their prices very well. Mind you, I saw this rather beautiful thing, a snip at £595 (!) and for a brief moment of insanity, seriously entertained the idea that it made perfect sense to get one:
(It has an integrated piezo electric mic so you can plug it straight into fx, as shown, no faffing.)

Thanks it is very nice sounding
This is absolutely fantastic. Great work friend! I have a (cheap) melodica and they’re lots of fun to sample! That app is a great one too. Nice use of Steel Guitar as well.
This is excellent! A really lovely dubby, moody piece! And I love the quote as well.
I love the drama and the percussive hits on this one.
My son recently brought a instrument that identified as a melodica back from a music lesson to show me.
I loved it so much I bought one on the internet. I'd never seen one looking like this before:

While I don't have a microphone, there are also modern melodica samples for DecentSampler available.
Don’t bother with melodica apps.
You can buy a decent one for very little £ and they are so much more expressive than an app. It’s not hard at all to learn how to play
I’ve been telling myself that for over 50 years. Still haven’t found an instrument I can play!
@belldu : from the depths of my instant expertise on all things Melodica (I.e. half an hour window shopping on the net) I can now confidently state that that is a vintage model Melodica most likely from the 1970s! For some reason the current vogue seems to be an actual mini keyboard rather than the button style . Personally, I like the look of the vintage style better. Not sure which would be easier to play, mind. Or given my past experience with guitar, bass, keyboards, dulcimer, etc, perhaps I should say ‘harder to play’.
I think the modern keybed style maybe easier to play, but I prefer the button style as it feels more like a wind instrument. Its also more convenient to tuck into a jacket inside pocket and delight friends with an impromptu performance. It is also 'modular' in that you can attach different mouth pieces:

Nice moody track!
Toy melodics are fun too and very affordable. This one is in C and goes from G2 to E6
Hypnotic trippy goodness, as always!
Sounds good. Very cinematic.
Your definitely mellowing as time progresses, rhythm, melody, repetition… you’ll be doing 3 minute pop songs in a bit 😊
Nice track btw !
