Searching for best IOS software for my live rig

Hi all,

I'm in need of a little advice from all of you folks regarding my possible best options for a IOS app, or apps that can give me what I need for live use. I am currently using the Yamaha YC61 as a controller & sound source but I need to be able to augment the YC61's soundset with outboard IOS sounds/apps and I'm a bit overwhelmed by all of the possible options out there! :s

I've been looking for an appropriate multi-timbral app that I can manually play drum/percussion sounds from PLUS be able to load my custom samples in to. I also need to be able to switch via MIDI channel (from YC) to other synths, keyboards, etc on the iPad.

I intially looked at Garage Band since it's on my iPad and like some of the sound engines it has, but it appears that after some research that it is not multi-timbral (assign different MIDI channel per track). I may be wrong, please confirm.

Anyway, really appreciate any thoughts or recommendations you guys can throw me!
~cheers

What genre of music do you play? Are you a keyboardist in a rock band, worship group, Jazz ensemble, or are you looking for synthesizer sounds for electronic music? It sounds like the YC61 is your sequencer, so you are just looking for rompler style “sound modules”? There are plenty of drum apps, but they tend to have a focus and certain genre flavor, and some offer IAP sound banks that could cater to genre specific sounds.

Groove Rider GR-16 or Beat Hawk might be worth looking at (I’m not sure about the MIDI implementation). They migyt have enough drum sounds to handle yiur needs.
Bismark bs-16i is a soundfont rompler that might be a good place to start. It would have enough standard instruments for a lot of music, but not so much for electronic music, unless you add your own soundfonts.
Adding your own samples gets a bit tricky. Generally speaking I think that is more typical feature in DAWs, and everyone here has their favorites. I use Nanostudio 2 (Slate is the sample “groovebox” instrument inside NS2), and Beatmaker and Cubasis 3 are also popular, but Logic is what all the cool kids are using.

  • My iOS live set up includes:

Loopy Pro, to host and set up an easy to use interface for controlling everything, i don't actually loop though

    Pianoteq (best piano)
    Tera Pro (best synth)
    Tal-Uno-LX (juno clone)
Moog Model D (i can't yet give up on that bass sound)
(Xinematix, I don't have (yet) but you may want for good quality ROMpler sounds like strings)
Sugar Bytes Drum Computer (you could compare with FAC Drumkit - both will do what you want for drums and more)

    Turnado (live effects mayhem)
    FAC (most plugs)
    Bleass (most plugs
    Toneboosters (most plugs)
    Fabfilter (most plugs)

There is no need for multi-timbral app , you can use AUM as a host for various AU plugins (and set everything on a seperate midi channel )

Agree with this. Have used AUM for years as part of my set up. Only takes a second or so to load up a saved session and then I am ready to go. I have loads of different sessions with various synths, splits in my novation keyboard and effects ready to go for each song. The only drawback is you need stable apps that don’t crash in AUM. Have had dump pure synth platinum for this reason for example.

This is actually my main gripe with AUM as a live rig host. It just takes too long to load sessions for live usage (unless it’s been fixed with an update?). That’s why I moved to Camelot Pro…and now, most recently, Keystage. Both of those apps load session instantaneously. I’ve been pretty happy with Keystage thus far. Camelot Pro started giving me issues with loading some AUV3’s so I abandoned it. I’ve got no time for that.

You mean to load saved sessions? It never takes long at all to load sessions and templates I’ve saved. Takes literally a couple seconds.

  • Props and thanks to all for your input/thoughts! I play in several different bands including a nine-piece reggae band, which is the scenario I’m asking about here.. Basically I need to trigger everything from basic drum and percussion samples to my own sampled loops and then be able to switch to some synth solo sounds in other IOS apps.

I’m going to look at AUM, Keystage, Loopy Pro and Camelot Pro…
