Finding and fixing phasing issues in Logic
I spent some time on this while working on a song in Logic that had some weird sounding spots that I thought might be phasing. Just jotting it down here in case it helps someone else.
There are two plugins to help track down phasing problems. The first is the Correlation Meter.
When the line moves into the negative/red area, there is phasing present which is cancelling the stereo image. I started with it on the Stereo Output track where it did pick up some significant phasing in certain spots. Then I just soloed tracks until I found the one with the problem.
OK, so there's phasing on a track. What to do? The Gain plugin can help here.
First up was switching to Mono. This really brings out the effects of phasing, and I heard very noticeable drops at the bad spots.
The left and right channels can also each be inverted. In my case, I picked one and inverted it and checked the Correlation Meter after switching back to stereo. Sure enough, the spots which had bad phasing before were now fine.
Of course, inverting one of the channels isn't really fixing the problem. In my case, I was able to track it down to two oscillators being out of sync in ES2 on the track.
Really loving Logic so far. It's a deep, deep app with lots of great tools.
