Make Lemonade - A Father’s Day Sermonette

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

“The phrase was coined by Christian anarchist writer Elbert Hubbard in a 1915 obituary he penned and published for dwarf actor Marshall Pinckney Wilder. The obituary, entitled The King of Jesters, praises Wilder's optimistic attitude and achievements in the face of his disabilities:

‘He was a walking refutation of that dogmatic statement, Mens sana in corpore sano. His was a sound mind in an unsound body. He proved the eternal paradox of things. He cashed in on his disabilities. He picked up the lemons that Fate had sent him and started a lemonade-stand.’”

When we experience challenging moments in our lives, we often feel down, defeated and discouraged. God doesn’t make mistakes. Within our most challenging moments are opportunities to “make lemonade.” Check out the following example:

“This Startup Made A Deal On 'Shark Tank' And Just Sold To Shutterfly For $14.5 Million

GrooveBook (http://groovebook.com/) is a mobile app company that lets you print up to 100 of your smartphone photos and creates a 4.5” x 6.5” photobook that is mailed every month. The cost of the service is only $2.99 per month, which includes shipping and handling.

Why do GrooveBooks have a groove on the side of each book?

Shortly after coming up with the idea to print photobooks from smartphone photos, Brian spent months working on the design of the product. One of the hardest aspects of the idea was figuring out how to make the books flexible so that they could be mailed in bulk. While brainstorming, Brian beat the spine of a book with a pen out of frustration. The groove in the book created by the pen ended up making it flexible — which is how Brian came up with the idea. Since the grooves in the spine makes the books flexible, each GrooveBook can be mailed for only $0.80 each. If the books were not flexible, then the cost of shipping would be about $3-$4 higher. Brian also filed a patent for that idea to prevent other companies from copying GrooveBook.”

This is a great example of a mistake becoming a blessing!

Next time you “fall on your face”, pause - because you might be the midst of an idea or you may have identified an opportunity to improve or think differently.

Romans 8:28, “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” 🙏🏻
