Under The Milky Way - cover of the Australian classic by The Church
I did originally post this in the covers thread, but it seems that no-one listens there 😮
It was all put together in less than an hour in Logic. I recorded my cheap 12-string and my SJ200 with a Shure SM7B to create the layered guitars, then did the vocals with the SM7B as well. Bass was done in Logic, and I threw a Drummer on there and that was it.
Loop recording and Take folders just make recording a breeze IMO, I was never able to knock something out this quick in Auria. In Logic you just set a loop region, press record and do as many takes as you need, without needing to stop. This means you can just stay in the zone, and use the first couple of takes as a warm-up and by the fourth or fifth ones you're locked in and playing your best. I never knew I needed these features until I tried them.

Richard, nice track!
Been a fan of Australian music since the 80's - The Saints, Waterboys and several other great bands...
In your track above, it would be nice to replace your voice with the original, keeping your music?
Here's a wave track with just the voice from this song:

Thanks for listening
It might not work putting the original vocal in my version, I recorded mine in a different key to the original (capo on the 5th fret), Steve Kilbey is a baritone and I'm a tenor, so I had to transpose the chords to sing it in my range.
I thought it could be fun to combine the original voice with your music...
But, it's easy to change the pitch of the original voice...
But, we are here to make our own music, so, whatever, I thinks it's superfine to use advanced software on my Mac to isolate different elements in known song, and even be able to get MIDI-files separated to drum track/bass-track etc etc...
Waterboys are from Scotland,Ireland, Wales and England. Yeah they are amazing though!!!
You're welcome to try it if you want, here is a version of my cover without the vocal:

You won't be able to just paste the original vocal in though, since mine is in a different key and also very likely at a different tempo. The original is in A minor and mine is in D minor, so you will need to transpose Steve's vocal up by 5 semitones - it might sound a bit wierd.
Ooops!
My memory had totally wrong! But, Waterboys still great although they aren’t from AUS…
Thanks!
I give it a try later…
Australian? I always thought they were English.
Love the song. I do a version of it with an acoustic trio.
They're from Sydney. They were never very big in the UK, but Under The Milky Way was a big hit in the US in 1988. The song has become better known in the UK since its inclusion on the Donnie Darko soundtrack.
I'd love to hear your version, you've got a great voice and you can probably sing it in the original key.
Wow, that just blew my ind. For 30+ years I had no idea they were Aussie.
Best I can do is this snippet from a demo I put together to try to get work. I've been playing it on my own for years but in this case I don't sing lead, just harmonies.
Best songs on the album with Milky Way (Starfish) are imo Reptile and Destination.
Milky Way was co-written with Steve’s girlfriend at the time, Karin Jansson (of Curious Yellow). Later on she was a neighbour of mine fwiw.
Reptile is a great song, and I love the guitars on Destination.
Nice! You should record a cover with you singing lead.
How did I miss this?! Ohh well…
Freaking great remake, sound wise two different songs. Love that strong indie signature, guitar keeps the overall mood while the drums are not in the way, they do a great job emphasizing energy over all. Your voice nicely complements the whole thing.
I love it, keep them coming! 👏🤩
Thanks for listening, and for the kind feedback 🙏
ahh that takes me back...
Loved the church...
Great cover Richard!
😎
I remember buying Curious Yellow’s “Taken By Surprise” single at Red Eye Records. Sigh.
I walk past Red Eye several times a week.
Cool, impressive how full just a couple of tracks can sound (even outside of a punk or live context). While listening I was wondering, where I knew it from, yes Donnie Darko.
Thanks for listening I thing the two double-tracked guitars really help to fill the sound out
The Australian music scene of the 70s and 80s was an amazing thing to experience growing up. It’s a shame more of the local bands didn’t get the recognition internationally that they really deserved. Some seriously talented people.
Thanks for reminding me and taking me back to that time. This is in my top three of The Church songs the other two being I’m Almost With You and The Unguarded Moment.
A short video of Steve Kibley talking about the song:
