JWM - Darling (Justice-styled track done in NS2)

So a friend of mine from outside of this forum is the type of chap who likes to create mashups of others' music. Oftentimes they sound pretty okay, but other times they are lacking.

Anyways, the other day he said my Animal Crossing lofi track was rubbish, and so I took six songs...

-Sash! - Ecuador
-Ed Sheeran - Thinking Out Loud
-Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
-The Eagles - Hotel California
-Georgia Gibbs - The Hula Hoop Song
-Claudio Monteverdi - Vespro Della Beata Vergine, SV 206 - I. Domine ad adievandum a 6

...sampled them in Nanostudio 2, added a couple other things, Linn drums and live drums, and turned it all into this...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/rqzeutlmdx3t203/JWM - Darling (Demo).m4a?dl=0

Rest in peace to my friend's self esteem. 😆 Kidding, it's all for fun and goofing off.

  • Very nicely done! I love Justice and you’ve really nailed the style.

That equador sample made me chuckle too.

What did you use for the bass? Are the strings sampled or from an app?

  • Wee-wee 👏 Nothing like a wall of different sounds playing with each other. You made it sound fabulous.

  • I love a good mash up. I found it really exciting when ‘ x versus y’ mixes were everywhere and of course, Kylie nailed the zeitgeist:

So, yeah: more mashups please. You have a talent for them! :)

Thanks mate. :) My secret is @brambos 's WooTT, but don't tell anyone now. 😉 Lol.

That equador sample made me chuckle too.

Gotta love a 90s classic afterall. 😂 Yep, believe it or not, Sash is one of my big music production inspirations for over half of my life, and while "Darling" is not even remotely close to Sash's style, I can stick a little bit of Sash in that mashup.

The bass is Sunrizer put through some heavy processing. Yep, @giku_beepstreet is more than just Drambo, lolol.

The strings are from the Mellow pack in Module Pro, so in a sense they are indeed sampled. 😉

Aw mate, thanks. :) Well Justice made it sound fabulous first.

She sure did. Great mashup, that.

Thank you so much my friend. I plan to make a whole album called "Music for Frens" (which is a strange way to spell "friends" that I've seen floating around on Twitter), where I ask each friend what their top 3-5 favourite songs are, and I create a mashup based on those tracks.

"Darling" was one for my friend Doug (not our mate Doug, but a friend from outside of the forum), and I called it that title since Ed Sheeran sings "darling" a lot in the main mashup. 🤣 He picked the Monteverdi Baroque piece and the "Hula Hoop" song unwittingly, and since they were in the same key, that's when the cogs spun in my head.

Anyways, I'm going to put the mashups to the side for the time being since I'm going to work on producing a TripHop/Gorillaz-inspired type arrangement as part of a collab with one of our mates here. 🤫 Stay tuned.

  • This is fantastic man! Definitely nailed that Justice vibe. What were you using for the Linn drum? It sounds fantastic as well!

Now you’ve inspired me. I rarely sample other songs anymore and it’s something I’ve been wanting to get into. Did you just screen record and then dump it into NS2s sampler?

    [start of sarcasm]
How is it possible that you made in NS2 track build based on cut and rearranged sample loops , when it doesn’t have audio tracks ??
It should be not possible according most of people here, what kind of sorcery is this ?? I has been told NS is just for synth/midi based music !!
    [end of sarcasm]

Seriously - GREAT tune. I do not know Justice but this sounds to me like excelled sample mashup, it has real groove and sound is great ! Excellent production,s sounds very PRO 👌👍

  • Very good mashup! Groove with the strings on top!

    👏👏👏

KB6 audio samples. You can donate and get a lump download of all the samples available on the website (although they since got rid of the Roland and Boss samples since Roland are greedy jerks lol), or you can just scroll down and download each pack one at a time. There are a few Linn packs.

Well, screen recorded, separated the audio from Koala, exported the raw audio from Koala (rather than "performing" it), and chopped it up in slate via the audio editor. 😃

I know, right? Well, chopping and arranging microsamples would be more of a pain in the bum than just using Slate. Of course Beatmaker 3 would technically be better for chopping up microsamples, but honestly I can't be faffed learning an app I've never used before. I tried to learn Logic Pro for microsampling, and that just ended up as a migraine for me. (Although LPX is solid for recording vocals and mastering EPs.)

Thank you so much mate. :) Well, wait until you hear the next release. The track is finished, but I'm waiting on approval of the collaborator as well as his selfie so I can draw the album art. x'D

honestly (unsurprisingly) when it comes to chopping audio i always jump to NS build in wave editor. Yes, it's limited but what i like is when i make selection, then i zoom to absolute detail view to set precisely start point with bottom left/right handles, as soon as i start drag left handle it automatically jumps to start of selection while preserving detailed zoom, and when i start drag right handle, it instantly jumps to end of selection while still preserving zoom ..

No other existing audio editor on DAW i tried has such feature and it makes EXTREMELY fast chopping audio to multiple smaller files..

when i want chop something to let's say 8 pieces, i just first make 8 copies o original file and then always open one, make raw selection, zoom to the detail where i see almost individual samples, tap and drag left handle to adjust start, tap and drag right handle to adjust loop end, double tap on "action" to trim, exit&save, done.

Super fast, and most importantly because there is no menu diving involved, i can work with just muscle memory, brain totally turned off :).

Much obliged 🙏 I have the Linn drum in Beathawk but it’s only decent. Then the pack in DM1, but it’s IAA only. I’ll have to check that site out!

Koala is really great for stuff like that. It’s still one of my all time favorite apps. I use it all the time. I like Dawnbeat a lot too but I wish it could also be an AU instrument instead of only standalone with AU hosting.

  • Great track. You got a great ear for micro sampling and mashups. Keep them coming.

  • Great tune! That Bass 🤯

Thank you so much mate. :) I'm definitely going to continue this trend. I also just finished a collab with Richard Yot and posted that to the forum where I microsampled three songs. :)

And now I'm working with my friend aforementioned mashup friend on a new piece together. He gave me his top three favourite songs, and I gave him a choice of which drum samples, which bass sound, and which two main instruments I should to use. Then I'll cook it up. :P
