Source of notes
sqsl Astral turns iPad into conceptual MIDI controller inspired by night sky.
100% full screen mode for maximum immersion effect
creative quantiser for pitch/scale control with 5 quick-access presets
notes in the field are spread across 3 parts(MIDI channels) with adjustable density, velocity and octave range per channel
fields and quantiser settings can be saved/recalled (5x49 preset positions)
Important notes:
Astral starts in full screen, swipe from left edge to toggle quick-access quantiser presets or from right edge to access detailed settings.
Astral does not make any sounds on its own, it generates MIDI note on/note off messages.

This might be an obvious question, but can an app like this be used during multitasking to be potentially layered on top of AUM?
I'd get these apps even they are not AU but the real deal breaker is lack of midi sync or Ableton Link.
ouch! thank you for letting know
Yeah that’s why I’ve only gotten Latch so far. It’s great for drones. But the dev really needs to make some improvements there if they want any sales.
Yes... Is it that hard to add ableton link? This does seem cool but I have yet to figure it out - the 'manual' is as terse as ever lol
Yeah I’ve used your video on Latch as the manual haha. It does seem cool but for a sequencer, not at least having Link is preposterous. Is this one more of a controller or does it sequence as well?
Genuinely not sure, exactly, I only had a very brief chance to play with it so far. More of a controller I think so in that sense you could play along live with a drum track or whatever and just record the output maybe? > @HotStrange said:
Gotcha. I’ll wait until more comes out about it but I think I’ll probably end up passing on it.
Operates outside AUM and DAWs. Lives in its own universe. No AUv3 or even IAA. Not sure if this dev is interested in sales. Most of us work in AUM, Cubasis, now Logic, etc. if devs refuse to accommodate they will lose market share big time.
Yeah, me too ☹️. I was excited about it, but seems like a closed system for the most part. I mean I can see using this with my gear, but I feel like I can create a similar environment with Rozeta, which is AUV3.
If they were at least IAA i would consider buying it but going from AUM to the app is a hassle. None of his apps although they look really good raises my interest because of that
At least sqsl Puzzle have MIDI clock output so it can sync, need to check others...
I don’t use hardware much anymore besides standalone jams so it has no real use for me anymore. Especially since the sequencers on my hardware are so good (model samples/cycles).
Anyone using this finding they are getting a lot of stuck notes?
FYI: I couldn't find much first hand experience/opinions on this app. I have this dev's sqsl RSVP experimental sampler and love it. Yes, I know it isn't AUv3, but with built-in recording, I don't really need it.
So, I so much love the unique approach of this dev's interface design that I wanted to try another one of his. This Astral app caught my eye and it's have the cost of his other apps at $10.
I was very hesitant, due to the lack of videos or reviews... and the interface looked kinda cryptic.
Decided to take a chance and really love this controller! I figured out most of the app quickly, but the 2-3 things that confused me.. the dev explained via twitter (I refuse to call it X) and it all came together. It's not as complex to understand as I thought, and it might be one of my favorite new apps. More for experimental/soundscape/sound design kind of stuff, but you can designate separate fields into 3 distinct columns if you want, and sort of play it.
The lack of AUv3 doesn't bother me. I just set up the synths and effects in one of the several apps like AUM or apeMatrix and control it externally with Astral. I don't really need them to occupy the same space at the same time to be honest. However, if you have stage manager activated on your iPad, it's even easier to go back and forth between the synths and the Astral controller.
Anyway.... since I couldn't find many opinions on this online, I'd thought I'd share my own experience. For me, it's a hidden gem and glad I took a chance on it.
This has got me curious about these apps again…but when I type “sqsl” or “rsvp” into the search field on this forum, absolutely nothing. Was there really no thread at all about RSVP? Seems kinda weird…
For some reason it seems we still need to change to search the Audiobus site instead of this one @michael_m
Yeah, I was having trouble too… but I did find a post that was favorable on one of the bigger plugins sites. I can’t recall which.
I just connected my iPad to my macOS Logic install via Bluetooth using midimittr and controlled synths in Logic using Astral on the iPad.
Very fun!
ps. RSVP installs on macOS too. It’s not native but works as perfectly as it does on iPad
