Using “Hip Hop Drummer” as a MIDI Generator

I picked up the new “Hip Hop Drummer” and set it up in AUM as a MIDI Generator in addition to it’s Dummer duties. Only one instance since it’s an IAA app.

And another session:

This is deep with possibilities:

Comments

  • Tons of possibilities right here. It’s a killer machine just like the rest of his apps.

  • So is it sequencing AND providing the drums here? This sounds great.

Yes. The drum notes are exported as MIDI too and manipulated to sound more melodic.

I put those notes through Rozeta Scaler and put an LFO on the scaler’s transpose slider. So I preserve the rhythm while sweeping across a C natural minor scale.

This is Lunbeat’s most rhythmically complex app, IMHO because it has these complex Swing settings to emulate the J Dilla drum machine settings of hip hop.

Using Lumbeats apps as rhythmic generators of MIDI is worth spending some time on.
You can also create song form sequences but I’ve never looked into that but maybe I will. I’m also curious about modifying note lengths to create legato string parts with hipper rhythms. I need better rhythmic parts in Staffpad without having to notate all that detail with my pencil. It’s too much error prone labor. A Staffpad update is pending that may help this with audio to notation features. We’ll see.

A also put the MIDI through a Mozaic script @_Ki made to isolate the bass notes of chords and send that into a scaler for my bass parts in iFreteless. It was too sparse so I just created a second iFretless instance with a less pronounced bass instrument that plays all the modified midi stream.

  • This sounds really nice, fresh and alive, and thanks for this intriguing info and more gleaned from scouring the forum archives.

  • Novel use of a drum machine and the output sounds pretty good - some very nice musical grooves as well as the drums.

  • I especially liked the transition at 3:22. Hearing lots of possibilities. Thanks for posting this!

  • And I hope that picture is you playing your industrial-strength Bluetooth midi keyboard

    😆

This idea must be floating in the ether right now because I was just trying something similar using Beat Scholar.

You're getting a lot of good tonal variations here.

  • Why would anyone take the time to develop an IAA app today? That would be like… (fill in the blank).

  • I added a 2nd demo:

  • And I’m still learning and playing:

I’ve also been enjoying using Beat Scholar piped through Scaler etc 0 it has great swing control. Nice idea McD, must try this with Hip Hop Drummer too. Probably adding Mollilooper into the mix!

liking your new variations. Do the drums have to be heard or can you just send out the midi alone? I don't intend to get that app; just curious.

you should do a video maybe?

  • If you’re running it in e.g. AUM @Stochastically you can just mute the channel, that the Drummer is loaded in. still carries on sending MIDI.
@McD , have you tried varying e.g. Jam and Intensity in the Drummer with CC messages. I can get one at a time working but not both at once. Sure it’s something I’m doing wrong but just can’t figure it out 🤨

Haven’t tried the CC options yet. I’m running the midi into a Mozaic script to split the drum parts out across channels. I record that midi w Atom2 and export/import to Staffpad. It save a lot of tricky pencil work. I need to work on note offs to make the imported parts legatos.

Well, I already covered using Beat Scholar to play midi in my walkthrough 3+ weeks ago lol

I’m asking because I don’t know… does Beat Scholar get anywhere near the rhythmic sophistication of the LUMBeats Drummers? Mastering LUMBeats apps is a real “hero’s journey” complete with monsters and long treks to reach the goals.

I found that I want a more generating functions to I added Funk Drummer and Reggae Drummer to see what came out at the end of the “Note Grinder”. Reggae Drummer seems to add more interesting counter-rhythmic ideas to the “hip hop” options.
