iDS-10 memorial song: Goodbye, iDS-10

https://soundcloud.com/jack-frost7/goodbye-ds-10-ids-10-song

It was difficult to mix because of how limited it is as a groovebox app, but I had fun with it. Its sad to see the app go off the app store, but it has kind of carried the torch to Electribe Wave.

  • This is really cool mate! iDS-10 seems like a great app, but I never purchased it because, just like you, I've mainly used NS2 (although I've also used Gadget to a great extent as well as AUM for Ambient jams).

About your track, it really reminds me of early Jean-Michel Jarre (whom I've been listening to quite extensively the past few days). But this track also has a nice 8-bit edge and a lively funk to it. Definitely 10/10. :)

Thanks for the feedback! I felt it could've used a couple of transitions, but you are really limited to 32 patterns and up to 64 steps each. I think I will export the individual sounds and mix/master it in Studio One.

  • Some great vintage vibes from this.

  • Nicely quirky, didn’t know what to expect next, lots happening, very enjoyable 👍

  • Very cool. If you felt limited by this app, you seem to have gotten around it. I loved the sudden transition at 1:10. From there on it had a lot of variety that kept me guessing all the way.

Just in case you don’t know, check out the app Eon by Jean-Michel Jarre
It plays his music along with cool graphics. It’s free on the App Store.

I suggest at your leisure you check out Manuel Gottsching and/or his group project, Ashra. If you like JMJ, then it’s time to take it up a notch! All the twee-ness of JMJ is replaced with taste and sensibility.

New Age of Earth is the best synth album ever imo. It’s on Spotify/Apple.

Transitions are easily fixed by overlapping, but loop-based apps often tend to make this difficult or not possible.

    It is great work.

I’m particularly fond of the earlier

This video linked here is an incredible journey! Didn't get bored once in the 19+ minutes. :)

By the way, what is "twee-ness"? 😆

For me, this atrocity by a genius always defines “twee”
(Others have different definitions and examples):

Says it's a live album but is it really him playing all the parts? I wonder how much was preprogrammed. Very nice.

Most of it is not live live, but the live show tracks on that playlist do have a lot of preprogrammed elements so he can rip on guitar or do something else. It made live shows feel a little empty at the end (RIP) without tons of equipment up there and a lot of him staring at a laptop, but the studio stuff is incredible. His ability to arrange all that stuff on the fly and nail all the layers and most of it with one-take recordings was impressive.

I’d suggest skipping the live tracks and really just start at Ashra-New Age of Earth (if track 1 doesn’t immediately win you over [those syncopated keys were played live, no MIDI yet], stick around for the epic closing track for a masterpiece in knowing your instruments. or his solo E2-E4 (widely considered the first “trance” album…he recorded it just for himself over two days to have something calming to listen to on plane rides…and it turned into a dance floor hit). Those two give you the strongest overall taste of MG, and they’re on Apple/Spotify now.

OP I’m sorry to hijack your thread. I echo the others and say it’s really enjoyable and unpredictable in a great way. I really like the wobbly lead synth section towards the end around 3:45

Those are the two albums of his that I already know. (From reading this board. You probably recommended them to me on here years ago.) Great stuff indeed.

So I’m repeating myself without even remembering now. Chalk another one up to aging. Does this mean it’s time to retire? Did I ask that last time, too?
