looking for a piano roll app that can sequence different riffs.

hey audiobus community!

much love to everyone.

i’m looking for a piano roll app where i could possibly create different riffs and then sequence them live on the fly. i’m really looking for something that i can almost jam on different patterns with and is not confined to just one pattern on loop.

to give you an idea, right now i’m using fugue machine and creating different parts of a song by just playing the transpose section. only issue is it gets to be a little too same-same after a while.

would love to know if anyone has any suggestions.

thanks!

  • LK has a midi clip launcher and runs as an Audio Unit. So you can sequence multiple apps and have multiple sequences for each app and trigger them as needed.

Anything generative might would work. Piano Motifs, Zoa/OODA, a couple of the Rozeta apps.

Or you could run a midi effector app like Ionarics, Cality, MidiGates, etc in between your sequencer of choice and synth to spice up your sequences.

I use Xequence 2 for near everything around MIDI.

Yep this too OP. I knew there was another biggie I was forgetting and that’s the one.

    Atom Piano Roll 2

    Drambo

    Helium

  • Ns2

    Garageband

    Ableton Note…

I hope someday a Xequence 3 will be released that can be used as an AUv3. :) But Xequence 2 is super powerful and is probably what you're going to want to use.

oh shoot, planning on using it in AUM… so i can only use one instance? i mean that seems fine

Well I think you can make the MIDI "talk" between the apps mate. I...forgot how to do it though since I usually use Atom Piano Roll 2 AUv3, but frankly Atom isn't nearly as excellent as Xequence 2.

You can set each track in Xequence (or NS2) to a specific MIDI channel (1-16). Then, in AUM, set the MIDI channel filter on different channels as needed. You'll have to hop back and forth between the two apps but... nth world problems, amirite?

That said, I think LK might be what you're looking for. Takes a bit of learning but it's all within the AUM space if that's important. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lk-for-ableton-live-midi/id944972221

  • Xequence is a great linear sequencer but LK or Drambo seem much more along the lines of what OP was asking about as they are great for recording clips/riffs/motifs that you can trigger and sequence in realtime.

I recommended LK as well. Seems perfect if OP wants AU. Xequence 2 is really great though.

  • I’d use Drambo for this..

LK is free to try, but you'll need the Matrix IAP to use it for more than limited amounts of time without interruption. The demo should be more than enough to let you get a feel for it though. 👍🏼
