    Yeah that’s crazy isn’t it. I guess his (superb) vocal is filling any void. Plus some well placed toms.

  • I saw an interview somewhere, where someone involved with the sessions said he added a bass line, did another bunch of stuff and then took the bass line out again at the end.

    Part of Prince’s genius was that what isn’t there is as important as what is, or, as I once opined to a friend (possibly after some alcohol) “the holes are in all the right places”.

    No doubt about it. Still the best drum machine of all time. Dat snare. He liked using a flanger on drums quite a bit.

    When you are as good a rhythm guitar player as Prince…

    Looking back at his work, he seems to have been pretty aware of the trap of repeating oneself or doing the obvious. He seems to have said to himself ”what can I do differently in this song”.
