"I Close My Eyes" (Reggaeton done in a Justice style)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/b1h189tldu3gode/JWM - I Close My Eyes (Mary).m4a?dl=0

So I created this mashup for my friend Mary. Her top three favourite songs are these...

-George Michael - "Careless Whisper"
-Il Divo - "Everytime I Look at You"
-Lauren Daigle - "You Say"

I had her choose between a few drum machines (she chose the Boss DR 220A), which type of bass (she went with acoustic), three main instruments (acoustic guitar, sax, and flute), and the BPM (102bpm).

When I sampled the three tracks in Koala, I isolated the vocals of Il Divo. Otherwise the other two tracks remained untouched. When I started chopping up, laying out and sequencing the microsamples in Slate, I felt it had a Reggaeton vibe and just went with it while sticking to the Boss samples.

As I laid out the track, I added a HipHop section for a rapper to spit on top of (using 808 samples), but when I didn't hear back from the rapper (who still ain't said s*** back yet), I simply sequenced the microsamples overtop of the beat.

And that's basically the story of "I Close My Eyes". Cheers and enjoy.

My friend Mary really liked it. If you liked it, comment below.

  • Just say no to reggaeton.

LOL! I like the Reggaeton styled beat far more than the Reggaeton lyrics. 😂 I didn't use stereotypical Reggaeton drums but rather drum samples from the Boss DR 220A.

  • It actually sounds cool.

Thanks mate. ☺️ That means a lot. Yeah, Reggaeton is a cool genre of music, but like most modern Country music and most modern EDM and most modern Drill and Trap, one can only listen to so much before it becomes too much of the same thing.

Whereas I could listen to Ambient music and Lofi all day and not really get tired of it. Same with all the music of Justice (including Gaspard's "Escapades" album).

Honestly I probably should've put "Moombahton" in the thread title rather than "Reggaeton" as this seems more like Moombahton. Not sure.

  • This is insane, and I love it. My wife asked me, “What are you smiling at?”. I don’t know much about genres, but I would just say it’s cool.

Thanks mate! Glad you love it. You should have your wife take a listen. ^_^

  • I’ve tried, but she only likes country and gospel. I have started to listen to those genres and am coming to enjoy it. I have to say, Nashville productions are extremely well done. You may not be crazy about the music, but the work product deserves respect.

Oh there's no doubt that Nashville productions are of the highest quality out there. :) That's not what I don't care about regarding most modern Country music. It's the music itself, lol. I like classic Country-early 2000s Country. Everything from Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, John Denver, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Collin Raye, Patty Loveless, Garth Brookes, Alabama, the list goes on and on. :) Country Music from my mother's era and my era.

If there is one modern Country singer I absolutely think is awesome, it's Darius Rucker. Of course his work with Hootie & The Blowfish is phenomenal too, but his solo career as a Country singer is just chef's kiss.

Patsy Cline… the greatest female singer of all time. Bless yourself when you say her name. We were thinking of spending the night in her dream home outside of Nashville, but I think it’s been sold. Oh well, The Grand Ole Opry is reason enough to go back. It’s the best show ever, even if you don’t like country music. The production is magnificent.

I much prefer the really old stuff, when the music had a story to tell. The newer stuff is rather lame, shallow, and boring. Dinner’s ready, gotta run.
