Any serious alternative to Yonac Steel Gtr Pro?
It still does not see any CC64 (sustain) messages coming from an external controller. Even when set manually in the app under Advanced MIDI.

As far as I know here’s no other steel guitar app on the App Store. I think PSP2 has some guitar sounds and there are SoundFonts you can download but that’s about it.
There's nothing equivalent to Steel Guitar Pro.
I'm a bit confused though. It (like a real guitar) sustains by default unless you apply damping. That's the opposite of a sustain pedal. A keyboard app it ain't.
The midi implementation is lacking though. Not as bad as its predecessor but not terrific.
What ind of guitar sounds are you looking for?
Thumbjam has a pedal steel sound. It’s pretty nice actually. It’s called JR Smooth Steel
Jazz Guitar initially, to comp (mostly chords) along with ac piano - left hand guitar, right hand piano...if you get me.
Good sound fonts, or Pure Synth Platinum should work well enough for that, and they would work more as you would expect as a keyboard player. Midi Strummer might be worth looking at as well.
fwiw, I tried Garage Band and the two available were awful!! But at least I could apply the sustain pedal so I could hold chords as I transitioned to other chords. But I could not put up with the sound hahaha!
Thanks wim, yeah I've got PSP - guitars are ok, but don't quite cut it as well as SGP. Might just have to go back to that and see how much I can tweak them
There are existing Mozaic and Streambyter scripts that will provide Sustain Pedal support for any MIDI app that does NOT respond to CC64 input. Do you want to try one or the other?
There is a Mozaic script from Bryan on patchstorage and @_Ki’s StreamByter script on the audeonic site:
https://patchstorage.com/sustain-pedal/
https://audeonic.boards.net/thread/611/sustainnotes-delay-depending-sustain-pedal
Steel Guitar Pro has the best sound engine for that instrument type, IMHO.
Also if you get an app like Pure Synth for the guitar sounds, it’s worth picking up a couple of amp sim apps to make them sound better. You can get pretty realistic that way.
Thanks...I've got Mozaic working for selecting stuff for Lumbeat drum apps, but they are a "one-off" initital command send. Not sure how to implement a script that is continuously used...but I'll have a look anyway.
Good idea, I'll have a look, thanks.
No problem! I also recommend the Nembrini Acoustic Amp plugin for iOS. It makes all my acoustic guitar samples and patches sound so much better. Running PSP or Pianoteq through that, it’s almost indistinguishable from the real deal.
I’m not aware of ANY credible alternatives to Yonac’s Steel Guitar Pro on iPadOS. It’s world class.
^ I fully agree with this--but of course Thumbjam is IAA, not AUv3.
I might be a little weird but I use Steel Guitar Pro frequently for those beautiful guitar sounds, yet ironically I prefer to pluck the strings with minimal slide. If I do actually want steel guitar (and I do love that sound as well), I'll use the JR Smooth Steel sound in Thumbjam which I find infinitely more playable. YMMV
Is there an easy way to use steel guitar pro as a way to strum a bunch of guitar chords in a row? With slide guitar all the chords are of the same type (for instance all major, etc) - I was wondering how to strum for a bunch of chords of different construction (really mostly major and minor)
Guitarism will output MIDI to Steel Guitar Pro.
I’d be very interested in picking that up. Is that the “Acoustic Voice Preamp” that you’re referring to?
What DAW are you using… I‘lol show the set up. AUM Projects can be uploaded to Patchstorage and shared. The trick is
Owning the apps required:
AUM
Steel Guitar Pro
Mozaic
And some predetermined MIDI controller or MIDI generating app
I’d imagine sharing might work for other DAW’s using some way to share the project file.
FYI:
I hacked some Mozaic script to use Steel Guitar Pro as a MIDI controller for other synths:
https://patchstorage.com/sgp-midi-filter/
Steel Guitar Pro outputs a custom MIDI protocol intended to be used in MIDI recordings and fed back into Steel Guitar Pro… but this Mozaic Script modifies the live MIDI output to allow Steel Guitar Pro to be used as a “Slide” MIDI controller for apps that support Pitch Bends of 12 Semi-tones like AudioLayer, Zeeon, KQ Sempai, Continua and others.
It’s a work in progress and I’d appreciate some user testing and feedback. It can make sounds in your DAW that no other controllers can match for microtonal notes and glides of an octave or more…
Hi Mac, none. Don't use on on iOS.
That’s the one! It surprised me with how great it sounds. Very natural.
Sure. You just need an app or some type of MIDI controller to send the notes to Steel Guitar Pro. If you want to strum the notes like a real guitar I know that MIDI Strummer from 4Pockets can do that - you can create custom strum patterns and arps, and Progressions (also 4Pockets) has strumming and arp patterns. Drambo has a MIDI strum generator, and I'm sure there are others. You could also just record, edit or load a strum pattern into a MIDI sequencer such as Atom 2 or Helium. These are just some ideas - I'm sure others here can provide much more detailed examples, if needed.
If you have a part written and you’re just looking for the sound, you could ask around on the forum for someone to collaborate with. There are definitely quite a few guitarists here, and you won’t get a more accurate sound than the real thing.
Logic Pro has some pretty nice guitars from what I've heard and I 100% agree with @wim about Steel Guitar Pro, but I wanted to see what I could come up with using some existing apps on my iPad using soundfonts. I think there's definitely some possibilities for that with the right combination of soundfont player and MIDI control app. I created a short video with an example using one of my favorite sources of piano soundfonts, who also has some other instruments in the collection:
