« Higher and Higher », Richard Yot & JanKun

After last month collaboration which can be heard here https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/56040/i-wanted-to-be-there-for-you-collab-with-richard-yot ,
@richardyot sent me another sketch and again let me totally free to create my own arrangement for it. The initial sketch had a beautiful piano part that I deconstructed (or butchered) by splitting it into 3 parts which then lead to the current version. I included a lot more synths than I usually do for this one.
I particularly like how our voices blend in the verses. This time I learned a lot in terms of mixing and basic mastering skills (loudness) thanks to him. I am feeling truly blessed to have his trust. I am not sure he is getting much in return compared to what I am learning from him, each time, collab after collab. Merci, Richard !
As usual, iPad only

Lyrics in the spoiler:

You’re running you’re stumbling you want to break through
Nothing is certain and that’s nothing new

You thought you’d strive you thought you’d stay alive
You were ready to blossom you were ready to thrive

Higher and higher you’re sixty feet tall
They wanted to stop you they want you to fall
You stand so high you can see it all now
The breath of the wind blows over your brow

It’s nothing you’re crumbling it’s ended for you
It’s finished it’s over you know that you’re through

You thought you’d thrive you hoped you would survive
But life can be cruel so you took a dive

Higher and higher you’re starting to fall
You were playing with fire for nothing at all
You fall from high this is your final bow
The breath of the wind will be all you feel now

  • It's amazing to see what @JanKun does with my little sketches, the simplest song becomes something else, and I love this epic arrangement he's created. B)

  • I listened to this several times and heard something new each time. I really liked how the intro tricks the listener into thinking this is an ambient song, then suddenly kicks into a rocker. The drum track sound like a real drummer. I liked how the kick drum changes at “You thought you’d”, then drops out at “Higher and higher”. The vocal harmonies were spot on. This reminds me of when I was young and single and and went to rock clubs with live bands. Conclusion: It’s got a great beat that I can dance to (if I didn’t have arthritis). Excellent work, gentlemen!

I must admit, I didn’t expect this. From the beginning to the end, building that expectation to never disappoint. Perfectly justifies the title. Love that mood, love that vibe, it’s perfect for my listening repertoire. Bravo! 🤩

  • Good collab nice track

Thank you for listening. Lately I have been working a lot on acoustic drums trying to make them sound realistic, so your comment means a lot!

Thank you for the kind words, Richard! It is always a pleasure to work on your songs because you have a great sense for creating crystal clear melodies that become the perfect guidelines for arrangements.

  • Hey this is aGreat track, nice compositional choices and the ambient in and out is great. Your voices were great and the ending outro violin is fantastic . What vocal AU did you use? So far I have best success with Voicepitcher.

How do you collaborate? Like how do you guys reach out to someone else to ask? I am too shy to ask someone who can make me look like a school grader at production. Comp+arrangement+performance, I’m good…but I need a hand with production as I learn more

Is there a collaboration request, classifieds ads lol?

  • I'm totally not into songs, except when @JanKun and @richardyot are in.
I'm never disappointed. Great work LOVE IT!

In our case the collaboration just emerged naturally: @JanKun suggested adding some extra guitars to a track of mine, and I invited him to do it and that's how we got started.

People who work in similar styles will tend to flock together, so you will naturally find some like-minded people over time.

I guess the very first collaboration was 3 years ago with one of your text (Box of Things) that I managed to turn into a song. After 3 years, We probably could release an entire album of our collabs, time flies !
I was about to write a detailed reply to @fearandloathing but it seems he deleted his account... That was short... But thank you for listening. wherever you are now, be gentle on mescaline and adrenochrome, especially when listening to "White Rabbit" 😄

Thank you for listening and for the kind words Joseph. It means a lot coming from a great composer like you!

  • Excellent… definitely an example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts 🙏

Great drums and sparkling production on this. I’m getting the late, great Fad Gadget vibes from Richard’s vocals.. Always a good thing:

Didn't know about him, thank you for sharing! He should have been as big as Depeche Mode !
@richardyot ! Prepare oil and feathers, we got your perfect outfit for the video 🤣!

  • :) Yeah, he was actually an influence on Depeche Mode. (And many others). Another of his tracks, Ricky’s Hamd, featured a power drill prominently. The drums on this track, for example, included the slightly swung thump of a newspaper printing press in a street near the studio. A man after my own heart too: he turned to creating tape soundscapes and sound collages at the start of his career after realising he didn’t have it in him to learn to play conventional instruments conventionally. Died tragically young at 45 from a heart attack.

Thank you for listening, Tony. That's why I love Collabs so much !

  • Wow, great solid track! I really love the drums and the violin+synths duo at the end of the song.
Also the buildup at around 1:30 is so powerful. Very good job. Just one small thing (but maybe it's happening just with my earphones): the very first notes around 0:12 create a very high resonance which could be annoying.

Thank you for listening! Definitely had a hard time taming this Tardigrain patch 😅
