Song Of The Month Club - July 2023

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, a collaboration with @JanKun - I recorded a basic demo with an acoustic guitar and some out-of-tune vocals and he turned it into an epic and cinematic song (for which I re-recorded some better vocals!). Lyrics in the spoiler.

    Stop, think, tell me
    What we both see
You know I want to help you
But you’re not really here `

A needle left out by mistake
I saw you trying not to shake
And so you want to hide it
    You’re trying to deny it

    Hope, and hide
    Let it slide

I wanted to be there for you
I want the things you wanted too
But there is so much sadness
    There’s nothing I can do

    Lie, steal, shoot, deal
    Numb yourself you can’t feel
You are just a ghost now
    You’re no longer real

I’m watching you it’s sad to see
A friend who laughed so easily
You are nothing but a shadow
    A cold and empty shell

    Hope, and hide
    Let it slide

I wanted to be there for you
I want the things you wanted too
But there is so much sadness
    There’s nothing I can do

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to ProjectSam's Orchestral Essentials 2 for the choir, as well as to Omnisphere and Lores for the background instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled Passage.

  • This track is the Radio edit.. Its just been put out as a Promo.. On Veskler Records.. Enjoys guys...

David, hard to comment on your work without repeating myself... Great textural ambient. After listening to many of your tracks, what is striking me is your tasty choice of timbre which, I believe, is what defines you and is your unique voice/signature. Great work as usual. My only complain on this one would be the visual which I found a bit straining on the eyes.

I am not an expert in House, but it sounds like the real deal to me. I could definitely imagine myself at a party in Cyprus while you're mixing !
Great beat (what a kick you have here), sharp and present hihats but not overly harsh. The break at 2:20 is very welcome and the sax phrases comes at the right time for the final. Great vocalist, a bit repetitive to my taste but I guess that's the House Aesthetic. Great production, definitely pro !

Hard for me to comment too much on this one as I have been directly involved in the making. If I had something to change, I would probably choose a less harsh synth patch on "I Wanted to be there for you". Mixwise, I take like how you're not over using compression which helps to maintain an nice dynamic range all along the track. I like the reverb on the vocals, it creates a nice space. And I like the treatment on my backing vocals at the very end. Did you do some kind of pan automation? while listening on headphones, it felt as if the backing vocals were moving from right to left.

I used Quantovox Spatializer to push the backing vocals wide into the stereo image - there is no movement though, that's just an illusion (possibly caused by having those vocals pushed so far left and right).

Funny you're mentioning about Spatializer, it is currently on sale and I was considering getting it, as it looks great. Question : If one own Spatializer would True Pan from the same developer be redundant?

I have them both and use them in different situations: Spatialiser is great for widening the stereo image, my favourite app to do this, and True Pan is good for creating automated movement across the stereo field. They're quite different from each other and I find both to be useful.

You just sold me both, you should get a commission 😉

  • This is going to be strange, but my entry for this month is another Collab with @richardyot

The timing is just a coincidence as we completed both tracks within a month

This is another sketch sent to me by Richard consisting in a beautiful piano part which I splitted into different parts played by different instruments. I then build the rest of the arrangement on this.

    Lyrics in the spoiler:

You’re running you’re stumbling you want to break through
Nothing is certain and that’s nothing new

You thought you’d strive you thought you’d stay alive
You were ready to blossom you were ready to thrive

Higher and higher you’re sixty feet tall
They wanted to stop you they want you to fall
You stand so high you can see it all now
The breath of the wind blows over your brow

It’s nothing you’re crumbling it’s ended for you
It’s finished it’s over you know that you’re through

You thought you’d thrive you hoped you would survive
But life can be cruel so you took a dive

Higher and higher you’re starting to fall
You were playing with fire for nothing at all
You fall from high this is your final bow
The breath of the wind will be all you feel now

  • @JanKun love the driving rhythm, and the vocal effects on the verses which refreshingly end going into the chorus which gives the song a further lift. Well constructed throughout and the breakdown at the end is effective.

@richardyot great song! I first listened to it a few days back and re-listening this morning brings that lovely familiar feeling - in other words, it’s really catchy which is a constant trademark of your work. Very good vocal performance. And yeah, epic, cinematic production is an accurate description. Desperately sad subject matter, I can only imagine.

@DavidEnglish an epic! You are a master of your craft.

  • Lyrically, this one is a gut-churner of emotion for me as it was written during a deep low point in the relationship I have with my adult daughter, which has sadly has ebbed and flowed over the years. Musically I loved doing it - in the second half of the song there was an opportunity to let rip and try to “speak” with the guitar solo, to try to channel all those pent up feelings and emotions through my playing. I threw in a key change half way through the solo to lift the mood ahead of a final chorus where the lyric changes from “could come round” to “will come round” instilling hope for the future.

I ask if you’re ok and in a monosyllabic way you reply
    “I’m fine, how are you?”
Well I’m fine too but there’s nothing left to do
About the way things have gone
Seems like it’s disposable, a lifetime of memories count for nil
Forgotten in an instant you moved on
I should know my place by now
I should know my place by now

In the great scheme of things it’s no surprise
When I look back through the anger of my 20 something’s eyes
History repeats, you could still come round

I will bide my time, and spin another line
About a life you don’t know
That’s far across the water, and like father and like daughter
Out of sight out of mind
A lost connection, the line’s gone dead
No longer hanging on to every word that’s been said
Fading in the mist, I can’t hang on
I should know my place by now
I should know my place by now

Lost connection, the line’s gone dead
No longer hanging on to every word that’s been said
Fading in the mist, but I will hang on
    I should know my place
But history repeats, you will still come round

Very polished and clean production (as usual) with some solid performances, the vocals and the guitar parts are very well delivered.

The vocal doubling in the chorus section works really well, and the vocal melodies are great.

Great arrangement, performance and mix. Knowing what the lyrics mean to you, makes this sing even more moving.

  • @richardyot @JanKun thanks very much for listening and commenting

  • @richardyot
Love the transition from a simple tune to something multi-textured and orchestral. Most impressive.

    @studs1966
Sorry to repeat myself, but your music is consistently professional and well-produced. It’s almost guaranteed to get everyone out on the dance floor.

    @JanKun
This one has a swirling enveloping quality, which gives it a strength and warmth. At the same time, there’s a fragile, crystalline quality, which gives it a sense of depth and perspective. You two make for a strong collaboration.

    @BillS
Love the guitar in this one. And really like the message and sentiment. Top notch.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get around to reviewing this. Beautiful track that evolves very slowly indeed, it takes a long time to get from A to B but the sounds on the way are very nice.

  • Great track @BillS , very catchy guitar theme, impressed that you managed to get monosyllabic in without it sounding out of place 😊

  • @GeoTony Thanks so much for listening. Glorious return from you in the August Song of the Month Club I hope?!
