Paul Davids’ Epic A Minor Backing Track Challenge

edited July 2023 in Other Music Content

Paul Davids, the excellent musician and YouTuber posted this a day or so ago.
It’s well worth watching to see how 10 different guitarist tackle the same short (just over a minute) backing track.
It also gave me an idea for a challenge for all of you gifted people out there… see next post for more details…

  • This is the backing track, repeated several times and shows the details of the chords…

  • And this is one run through the backing track extracted into WAV format for you to have a go with… I’m working on mine now… no rules, just go for it 😊

  • Interesting… I haven’t picked up a guitar for quite a while, but time permitting, I might give this a go.

Cool solos in this video! I'm curious about the masterpiece that Flo would've laid on this progression… Surprisingly (as I wouldn't expect), at the first listening the one that moved me the most is Josh Smith's very "sincere" take 👍🏻

  • Well, I decided to have a go at this - even though I can't hope to compete with the talent in that video!

  • Ha superb timing Colin ( @AlterEgo_UK ) both musically and post wise. I was just writing a post inviting you to have a go as your post popped up 😊 Lovely playing and a great tone. Surprising what you can fit into just over a minute and I certainly don’t think your creation suffers in comparison 🙏

@michael_m , just pick it, tune it up, plug it in and away you go 😊
@Gratouilli I agree with you about Flo 😢 Also now I’ve listened to the video 2 or 3 times I appreciate Josh Smith’s sparseness and attack more.
I thought I’d ping @pbelgium , @AlterEgo_UK (just beat me to it !) and @Lady_App_titude to see if they are interested in having a go ?
Also any non guitarists out there (e.g. me)… a bit of piano @LinearLineman , some magic manipulation @Paulieworld or even a bit of cosmic melodic @Svetlovska !

  • Cool idea. Might have a crack at it later.

  • Cheers Edward ( @Edward_Alexander ) be nice to hear something from you again 👍
    Here’s my go…

Well, some amp warm up time and probably an attempt with each of my guitars, but yes - I probably should just play and see what happens.

@AlterEgo_UK - how did you get that fuzz tone? Sounds like a Fuzz Face, but not quite certain.

It was one of the many amp models I have for the fantastic (and free!) Neural Amp Modeler plugin on my Mac mini. Not sure which amp it is modelling though. The model is called "dr mw ch2 modern.nam" plus some Silververb and tape delay (and EQ).

  • Taking advantage of it being my thread here’s a slightly different audio only attempt 😊

  • Thanks for thinking of me @GeoTony. Here's my attempt - using my usual Nembrini gear.

@pbelgium that is some great playing. Jeff Beck would be proud. 👍

That note at the 0:50 mark was really sweet. Came out of nowhere. 😎👍

Nice to hear Geoshred holding its own!

I agree very Jeff Beck in places! Excellent stuff!

Some nice tracks. Great thread idea. Here is more boring, repetitive, poorly phrased attempt.

  • Nothing boring about that @Ailerom , really enjoyed it , loved the tone 👍

  • Great version @pbelgium , very distinctive, in a really good way 🙏 Also I appreciate the track art 😊

  • Just watched the video and all the takes were good, but, like @Gratouilli, I also preferred Josh Smith's more 'natural' improvised vibe (and Joey Landreth's slide).
Good interpretations posted here as well - @AlterEgo_UK (I can hear bits of Hank Marvin in there), @Ailerom (definitely not boring - are you tuned down to Eb?) and Geoshred master @GeoTony - great idea for a thread, hope there are more to come (and not just guitar).
Thanks @ecou for the kind comment, I practice with my thumb almost every day - it's getting there.

The phrasing sounds pretty good to me! Love the triplets!

I haven’t seriously worked on guitar soloing for years so I am really rusty, but I decided to give it a try after watching the video and hearing the great soli from fellow members @GeoTony @AlterEgo_UK @pbelgium @Ailerom. Hoping to hear entries from @michael_m @Gratouilli @Schmotown @Edward_Alexander @Paulieworld @McD @Lady_App_titude @LinearLineman @richardyot. It is actually a fun exercise !!!

I think you ( @JanKun ) must have been spraying yourself with WD40 cause you don’t sound rusty at all.
Loved the pause at about 55s where I started to think you’d given up then you burst into life again with that great 4 note phrase… top job !

  • @JanKun That's some nice phrasing and note selection. @GeoTony @AlterEgo_UK @pbelgium Thanks. I've been doing a lot of practice lately rather than playing and to me it sounds too much like practice runs without much phrasing or interesting note selection.

  • Some great talent here. Nice to know what’s hiding behind the techno speak. Very Beatles sounding @Ailerom. Really liked it. All iterations wonderful.

Nice. You certainly don't sound rusty! Love the double-stops/harmonies.

  • This is fantastic! I love hearing everyone’s contributions. It just keeps getting better and better. I have to agree with @LinearLineman that this sounds like a lost Beatles tape. I can just hear John Lennon. You should consider having one of our poetic members write some lyrics, and add a couple vocal harmony tracks. I will be listening closely!
