JWM - Binaural Minimalism (Binaural Minimal Dark/Deep Techno in NS2)

So I planned to play videogames today and stay indoors, but I became bored of the videogames and created this instead, lol. The kick, clap, snare sounds are panned ever so slightly to the front-left, the hats to mostly the left side, the congas mostly to the right side, the bass ever so slightly to the front-right, the high organ patch gently floats around the head, and the "bow" sound towards the last third of the piece floats around the head wildly.

The drums are TR-808 samples, the bass and "bow" sound are Hilda, and the high organ is some patch from KAPro Orchestral Dreams in Module Pro. There is a lot of polyrhythmic activity in this piece, such as the kick-clap-snare pattern being 8 beats long, the hats 5 beats long, the congas 3 beats long, and so on and so forth.

Cheers, and comment if you like it.

  • Oh man this is right up my alley. Fantastic stuff my friend! I love when someone uses 808s outside of the typical usage for modern times. It really is a great drum machine and almost underrated as far as what it can actually do. Not just the 808 BASS!!!!! lol.

The slight panning on the drums really make it stand out and that bass part is wicked. Great job man 👏

(Also 2 questions. What game were ya playing? And how did you get the embedded link to work? I’ve been unsuccessful with it so far)

LOL! It is fun to use an 808 bass for Drill and Trap, but honestly we wouldn't have Acid House without the 808 drum machine! I wanted to capture that feeling in this piece. The only thing I got stuck on was the title for the piece and came up with the unoriginal "Binaural Minimalism" for the title.

Thanks mate. :) Well, it's all thanks to True Pan to be honest. The best binaural panner on iOS currently (and I've tried the other ones also suggested to me, and True Pan is king). I also used PanFlow before True Pan on the cymbals so as to give the cymbals some nice movement without the cymbals circling the head like I did with the strings.

I've found that to make the binaural panning sound top quality, to use simpler/dryer sounds, and to put TB Reverb after everything (including the kickdrum, but to also make sure to use TB Reverb's EQ to scoop out the lows so not to muddy the low end).

(Also 2 questions. What game were ya playing? And how did you get the embedded link to work? I’ve been unsuccessful with it so far)

I was playing Animal Crossing New Horizons. It's tree beetle season, which is the time of year I make the most in-game currency with which to buy stuff. 😆 Yeah, playing a ruddy kid's game with talking animals while laying back in bed vaping nicotine was my plan for the day, but suddenly I overcame a minor writer's block and wanted to just produce something Minimal. I got my fill of fireworks yesterday from the rooftop of my flat by the lake, so I'm good on fireworks.

Also, to get the embedded SoundCloud link to work, access your track from the Safari browser itself on an iPad, not iPhone, and copy/paste the link. Copy/pasting from the SoundCloud app doesn't work with the embed either.

True Pan is indeed an excellent app! I use it all the time now. It can even be a sound design tool if you really push it to the extremes. I love apps that can be both simple and crazy and experimental at the same time. They did a great job with it!

I haven’t played the new animal crossing game but I’ve heard really great things! My fiancé loves Stardew Valley, which I’d like to play sometime. I’m stuck on a Call of Duty online kick right now. It’s taking all my time 😂

Thanks for that! I was trying it on iPhone which is why I having problems I assume. Idk why I didn’t think to just use the iPad 🤦🏻‍♂️

LOL! Call of Duty is a fun game, but ramps up my blood pressure too much at times, which is why I go for the "cosy" games like Animal Crossing. I haven't tried Stardew Valley yet but heard nothing but great things about it.

😆 I had the same problem when I tried to do the "iPhone only" challenge.

Oh yeah me and my fiancé get pretty fuming at times 😂 but I’ve played it for so many years now that I’m actually decent (even though I’m new to this specific game). It’s a fun time though. And Stardew seems really great. That and Diablo are next on my list 😎

Anyway not to derail your music thread! Another small complement: the album cover is cool! Reminds me of Achtung Baby from U2.

  • This is very good. I like the off kilter beats and the tension/ release of it. I also second @HotStrange ’s view re the 808. And when that ‘’Ow!’ Stab comes in - Oof!

I think you have real talent in the intelligent dance music arena.

  • Really like this track, great piece of work. the wobbling bass synth fits perfectly with the tight beats. With aerial vocals on top, it could definitely sound like a Moderat track. Bravo 👏

Oh you're not derailing my music thread any. :) We're having a natural conversation. And, 🤫 I used Wonder AI to generate that. Of course I added the text and adjusted colours and such with Apple's quick photo editing tools in the camera roll app.

Thank you so much bestie. :) That means a lot to me. It seems my best work comes out when I'm working through a creative block and suddenly have that "AH HA!" moment. This took me about 1-1.5 hours to make from start to mastering. I just felt the flow of the piece rather than tried to work with any end goal in mind, unlike my "Justice" tracks which are more complex and work towards an end goal.

Ooooo nice! :) I do love me some Moderat but haven't listened to them in a long while. I'll have to dig back into their discography on Spotify later on. I achieved the wobbling bass with Hilda and Perforator rather than any of Hilda's internal LFOs and such.
