Shure MV5 Mic with M1 iPad Pro
Hi Team
Just bought a cheap Shure MV5 off Amazon ($69 AUD and apparently used but sold by Shure). Waiting for it to arrive but just read online that it is not compatible with iPads using USB-C. Is anyone successfully doing this? I just assumed I could use a hub (so as to have phones and mic)? At the least I can use it with my iPhone I guess but it wasn't the intended option.
Thanks for any advice!

Hi,
I don't have a MV5 but a MV88+, which seems to have the same issue.
The mic itself works on any device, I get audio in and out, but the app (Shureplus Motiv)
doesn't work on USB-C iPads, meaning you can't set gain, volume, eq...
When you start the app it says to make any of the settings, please use a lightning device...
Makes it pretty useless for me.
cheers
Thanks so much for the response. Such a shame! May have took at selling the mv5 as soon as it arrives At least i got it cheap. I think I could get what I paid for it via ebay. I wonder what my best option is at the cheap end of things.
When it arrives, plug it in and see what happens. Rode says that my new mic won't work with tablets and phones, but I tried and it does (with my M1 Pro, anyway). Even if the Shure app doesn't work, you might be able to set mic gain in your DAW. See https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/56143/rode-nt1-5th-generation-does-the-usb-output-work-with-ipad-update-yes-it-does
Thanks DokWok! Will definitely give it a try regardless. Don’t need a lot from it for my purposes so as long as it can input a decent signal I’ll be fine. Can I ask which’s app(s) you’re using your Rode’s with?
I've done simple tests with AUM, Loopy Pro, and Logic. All three let you set the mic input gain.
Oh that’s reassuring. Hopefully the Shire will play as nice as it can without its precious lightning connection Thanks so much again my friend.
Sorry, one more quick question. Do you plug a hub in so as to have a port for headphones as well?
Yes, I am using a Nucleum hub and a USB headphone adapter. In my brief tests, I have let the iPad itself power the hub, the headphone adapter, and the Rode mic. But the Nucleum hub does have a USB-C power input.
There might be better hubs now. I knew, from this forum, that the Nucleum would work, but it only has one USB-C port and no audio port.
You’re awesome. Thanks so much for that.
Just thought I would update in case anyone else was looking at this mic. It works with an iPad Pro M1 with a small unpowered hub with mic attached and headphones attached via a usb to 3.5mm adapter (have to use 2 ring 3.5mm cable/no mic headphones in order for the headphones to work with this setup). Using Logic as the DAW. Thanks for the advice above!
I use it with an ipad mini 6 usb c
I use a miniusb to usb cable and a usb c to usb normal adapter and it works ok but the official app doesn’t recognize it
Nice! Initial tests seem to be good re: quality.
