What is your favourite midi control surface on iPad OS?
3 of my favourite iPad OS midi control surface apps. Changling. Lemur. TC Data.
Two sadly are no more so glad I kept them on my old iPad! What’s your favourite?
Comments
Well I use a bunch, and usually a combination but here’s a few I use regularly. None are all encompassing except maybe LK.
Tonality - Au Chord Pads can do a lot, and Circle of fifths
LK
Xequence, Xequence keys, xequence pads
ChordMaps2, big favorite!!
And, KB-1 and also ChordPolyPad (old classic)…
These three surfaces are on my AUM default template all the time.
Geoshred as an mpe control surface, especially for mono 'mpe' instruments
Xequence AU Keys for non mpe playing with fantastic velocity control on the Y axis, scales, cc sliders etc
Tonality chords for live strumming
Velocity Keyboard (though lack of state saving annoys me and will never be fixed)
State saving works fine in AUM?! Do I need to know something? 🤓
I have a ton but the ones I go to the most are Velocity Keyboard and Xequence Keys for just regular keys playing.
Tonality is great for sending chords and playing chord patterns manually.
LK is great as an all in one.
velocity keyboard had a release that addressed state-saving issues quite a while ago. What state isn’t it saving for you?
I’m also waiting for @Gavinski to say what the issue was. For me in AUM working fine, I have default settings saved, only changing keyboard layout from project to project and state saving works as intended. 🤓
Related: anyone use a second iPad (or old iPhone) just as a control surface for the first?
Really? Haven't used it in a while and last time I spoke to the dev they told me they would not be able to fix it. I'll check, thanks, but last time it would not save things like selected scale etc
Only for desktop Logic with ‘Logic Remote’ on iPad. I’m not a live performer, not much of a need for this option for me.
Yep, I run apps like Chordion & Guitarism on an old iPad.
So I just checked velocity keyboard and it seems that it is indeed saving state correctly now. Great!
Anyone else having a designated towel folded a few times for better force sensitivity on VK?! 🫣
KB-1
Xequence Keys and Xequence Pads
MIDI Strummer (4Pockets)
TC-Data
Geoshred Pro
Velocity Keyboard
Additionally many apps that have MIDI out with expression such as Animoog Z can function as control surfaces too. I just tried it out using different presets on a soundfont player for some guitar sounds, and by changing the preset, it was able to create highly varied sounds from each guitar, and some of them sounded pretty realistic - it took away some of that awful "MIDI" harshness.
Yes. I use Chordmaps 2 on my iPad mini2 to record chords into Drambo on my phone, or into Midi AUs hosted inside Drambo.
Other times I use LK on the iPad to control performance related stuff on Drambo, but now it seems to make better sense for me to migrate and take a deeper dive into Loopy Pro for creating more customizable surface templates for custom Drambo modules.
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Loopy Pro yet for the control surface possibilities alone.
Haha, is that working well? How much velocity range can u generally get and with what degree of control?
From barely working at all if it’s on the desk or any hard unmovable surface to the full potential with a towel beneath. Try force sensitivity with just holding iPad in one hand while tapping with other and then same while iPad is on the desk.
You can get full range, depending on how you set up sensitivity and ranges, VK already calculates surface of touch, but with the motion sensor working much better.
Yeah I have of course experimented with a few different surfaces, maybe need to check more ones
I know, your video 2 years ago got me into VK in the first place, haha! 😂
I totally forgot. Loopy Pro definitely belongs in the list. I've used it to do some automation, and to trigger things.
