Fear Itself (ambient)

I took about 20 random bits and stitched them together for this. I also wanted to use all of the special effects that I bought that I hardly ever use such as Other Desert Cities, Panstation2, Replicant2, Discord4, and several other standards such as Kosmonaut, Chorus, Reverb, Noise Gate, etc. Mostly Other Desert Cities. That one does some serious damage. Everything mixed down with Blue Mangoo Stereo Width and Magic Death Eye.

  • The piano introduction sounds great, very distant, (of course) I wanted more of it. So was the first melody over that piano.
Interesting piece, but in my monitors and headphones, the low are a bit muddy. It is unusual in your music.

I think you’re right. Probably a by product of all those effects. I listened to this too many times and my ears got fatigued. Oh well, I got some return on those effects, and learned a lesson for the future.

  • Oh I love Other Desert Cities. Also the panning on drums around 1:40 is great.

That was Panstation2. I have to find a good use for that. Thanks for listening!

  • Nice one! You put all those forgotten effects to very good use.

  • I really like this one. Nice job mate! :)

Yes, it’s like finding a good recipe for leftovers. Some turn out better than others. Next one will be the bomb!

I’m starting to get into this ambient stuff. Stay tuned. Thanks for listening!

  • Really enjoyed that, plenty of changes in the track. What DAW did you record it in to?

That's the kind of music I'm getting into as well. I'm finding that using presets and then putting a load of different effects on them, some really interesting sounds emerge. For example, I bought Richard Yot's Buttersynth presets and started using ODC, Fluss, and some Eventide reverbs, and got a lot of nice sounds.

  • I’m not a great fan of categorising music by genre / sub genre etc but there seemed a lot going on here for an ambient track ?
I am keen on good music however and this worked for me 👍
I liked the piano coming at about a minute and also keen on the idea of music that’s ‘random bits stitched together’ 😊

I used Cubasis 2. I should probably upgrade, but… if it ain’t broke. I know this is probably not what most would consider to be ambient, but I always refer back to Brian Eno’s definition for reassurance. I can’t help but put some structure into this stuff. My original piano teacher is still alive, in her 90s, and I can’t help but think she might hear this. I remember once playing Solfegietto for her with my own “interpretation”. She rolled her eyes and said, “That very nice, Paul. Now let’s get back to work”. Thanks for listening and commenting.
