How do you release music online (safely)?
I am probably a little older than some or you, so I’m asking this because I am out of touch with technology and platforms and how to upload your music to a platform safely
By that I mean: 1. How do you upload without a copywriting? I copyright all of my albums, which are only a handful, but all of my songs are copywriten. How do you guys do it without doing the USPTO style and paying for the protection per song or per album ?
- I see reverbnation, SoundCloud and band camp, but is there any fees for uploading them for any reason? Likewise is there anyway to ‘monetize? Like can you upload a song, and if people like it, you get paid or if they download it or something? Or maybe if you get 1000 plays you get a royalty of sorts or something?
Also are there other platforms ? I see YouTube has a creative common license but is it safe?
I realize I was criticized for asking questions like this, like asking what the best ideas are from other artists but I don’t know where else to ask since there are some professional and semi pro level artists and I have never done anything online before.
I am curious how you make geometric music videos for free if you want to tell what app does it, if possible too please
I have maxed out my App Store purchase and have completely been dedicating my time to the music only now, no more experimenting . It’s now time to ask my forum elders how to release music so I don’t lose my rights; most importantly rights ofc!, and if possible it would be cool to know how to make some coin if possible
I emphasize that the only requirement is that it’s free to stream and copyright safe

In the US at least, you automatically own the copyright to anything you create without needing to do anything.

Also you can use an online aggregator like CDBaby.com to upload your music to all the major online stores and streaming sites. They handle all the payments and royalties for you, you just collect a paycheck after hitting a certain threshold of sales (you can usually specify the threshold, ie they send you money after $20 in sales, etc)
1/ no concern about that .. i think until you aren’t going to release A-class radio banger which is going to rip all world charts it is wasting of time to take a care about that .. there are hundreds of thousands of small indie artists and there is no reason to expect somebody will try steal your music and make millions with it ;)Your music is just droplet of water in ocean and if you get few hundreds of listeners on streaming media you can consider it as success :-))
2/ For example BandCamp gets no fee for uploading music there, but everytime somebody actually buys your music there they get small fee from purchase price and then send rest to your paypal account. I would say this is best simplest way of directly sell music
Don’t expect you sell significant amount of copies until you doesn’t invest into huge self-promo campaign across all possible social media though…
You can use some payed service like Dittomusic or Distrokid or CDBaby which puts your music to Spotify, Apple Music and other big streaming services and charges you with some
yearly subscription fee (typically much bellow $100/year) - but do not expect any significant money from it. You need hundreds of thousands (or millions) streams to get significant money from it, so again unless your music is something major and you invest into BIG selfpromo campaign.
At the end, i just realised it’s best to just put all
music on Youtube and Instagram - i get on YT and IG way much more listeners than i did on SoundCloud (like 10x more). My music makes it into ears of ppl who wants to listen it, that’s all i need.. I have my daily job for making money, i make music just for fun.
For whole existence of my BandCamp account(+10 years) i sold 2 or 3 copies of my album 🤣.
I never saw single penny from music i have on Spotify 🤣
I think (but I’m not a lawyer!) that it’s the same in any country signed up to international copyright law (Berne Convention?). How long it lasts for varies depending on jurisdiction, but your work is automatically copyrighted, unless you explicitly waive it by using Creative Commons or making it public domain. Certainly, that’s my understanding here in the UK.
A bigger (and growing) problem seems to be people getting problems from automated copyright screening on the likes of YouTube, due to using common sample packs. I believe that a lot of people ran into this one due to Rihanna(?) using a loop from GarageBand in one of her hits.
On Soundcloud, you can choose to upload as copyrighted or using a CC licence. I assume Bandcamp respects copyright, as so many artists use it. They also limit the storage on free accounts, you have to pay a sub for unlimited space.
As for monetisation, Bandcamp certainly pay (NB I don’t know the details), and a fair few artists seem to use Distrokid to get stuff on the streaming services. They then handle the money side of things for you. Again, I don’t know the details - it’s kind of on my list to check out, as I have a large backlog of stuff and my Soundcloud is heading towards full. I’m currently mostly uploading to YouTube to get round that.
all is said here.
And that’s pretty much all I need to know , really I more or less wanting to make sure it’s a protected platform , thanks everyone, especially Dendy and Jon
Yup. As long as it’s captured in some form, ie written down or recorded. A date and initial/signature could help. Now if you ever go to trial over your copyright that should be enough to hold up in court the vast majority of the time. However The only 100% guarantee is getting an official copyright. To me thats not necessary, unless I’m officially releasing something and i have the budget to copyright.
If you get stuff to the right people and they like it and share it that’s a good start. There’s lots of great music curators on various social platforms. David Dean Burkhardt on YouTube is one of my favorites.
Anywhere and everywhere. The way I think about my music now is a who cares approach. Spread it as far and wide as possible. If it gets stolen try to recoup the benefits but ultimately I just think the only hope in this day is a scatter gun approach.
I just am at the end of the 18-35 (nearing lead 4 lol); I for some reason thought this was a much younger crowd. Maybe because the platform is newer to me so I feel im behind the cool kids
And thanks for the replies. ill avoid common use
Well as a fairly recent 55 year old I know what you mean about age.
To echo others: Bandcamp/Soundcloud are good and safe. If you do fancy Spotify/YouTube/Amazon/Apple/etc - I’ve used RouteNote’s “free” service - that is free to upload, but they take 15% of sales. For me that is pretty much 15% of nothing (well currently $5 at the moment).
But don’t be disappointed if it’s somewhat slow getting listens (except TikTok - I had 1,000s of “something’s” from TikTok. But I just don’t get “TikTok” so I have no idea what it meant).
61 years old here…
Still not one of the cool kids…
I wouldn’t say that, your tracks are very cool
@kitejan ok then I’m in good company
62 here. Just getting into my stride… well, hobble…
As some have mentioned here, unless your music represents something completely revolutionary in the world of music you don't have a lot to worry about. Music can be easily copied and redistributed online and there's very little that can be done to stop it. Musicians only really make money through touring and merchandise sales these days. There is almost no profit in individual song or album sales. If you happen to have a rabid built-in fan base, they might be willing to pay for whatever you release... so maybe work on getting those fans?
If you just want to try to sell your songs online, try using any number of online music distributors. There are a lot of them. If you just want a showcase for your music, you could always post your music on YouTube.
Sorry if this all sounds quite negative, but this is just reality in the music business. There are a million musicians and millions of songs and it's really, really tough to break through. So do something different and do it for yourself. Don't worry about anyone stealing your work. Just have fun.
That’s a baby on this forum!
First I’m just looking to get it out there. the money would be a good bonus but really I just want to put out some art with all the work I’ve been trying to do on iOS
I’ll take your advice and have fun
I don’t have much to add that hasn’t been added but wanted to chime in and say no need to apologize or preface your questions in that way. It sucks you’ve been criticized before for things like this. Hope they doesn’t run you off of the forum! I’m glad you’re here 🤝
I’m so old that I now see a paleontologist for my yearly physical.
Free Dad Joke above ^^^^^^
Lol! 😂 I'm 39, so I'm the teenager in this forum. 🤣
Also, where did @fearandloathing go?
Right there with you my friend, though I’m a little bit younger than you even 😆
Ah you're a kiddo then. 👴
Yep I’m the ripe “young” age of 31 👶
Ha! Nice! 🙂
