My 5 most memorable concerts - What are yours?

  1. The Clash at the Palladium NYC 9/21/79 - this was the show where Paul Simonon smashed his bass against the stage. The photo taken of this fit of rage became the cover of London Calling.

  2. Steve Reich’s 70th birthday celebration Carnegie Hall NYC October 2006. A star-studded evening. Kronos played Different Trains, Pat Metheny played an astonishing Electric Counterpoint. Then, after an intermission, Reich and his ensemble played Music for 18 Musicians. By the end I literally felt like I was floating through the air.

  3. Sonny Rollins The Bottom Line NYC 3/7/86. My wife and I were seated virtually at his feet. He was introduced and he started to play and within 30 seconds I looked at her and there were tears streaming down her cheeks. As there were down mine.

  4. Bob Dylan Radio City Music Hall NYC 10/17/88 I’ve seen Bob numerous times in a variety of places (including one of the Rolling Thunder shows) but this was my favorite. In the band: G.E. Smith! In the audience: Tiny Tim!!!

  5. Codona SUNY Buffalo Student Union mid-‘70’s You may remember this unit: Collin Wallcott, Don Cherry and Nana Vasconselos. They all played multiple instruments and they may have been the tightest loosest band I ever saw. Another floating through the air experience.

So many. One time Ralph Towner cured a terrible toothache I had for the duration of his solo concert, just him playing guitar at McCabe's. It started hurting again after I got home though. His magic was of limited potency.

I recall a series of concerts by the Shostakovich Quartet playing all of the quartets Shostakovich ever composed. It was at the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena over a number of weeks. I did not know at the time that the college where the auditorium was located was run by a weird cult. Incredible musical experience though.

  • Giving it some quick thought:

    1. Queen at Wembley Stadium in 1986 (one of the gigs recorded for the album of that name).

    2. Motörhead on the Iron Fist tour in 1981.

    3. The Subhumans at a small gig in 1984.

    4. Nine Inch Nails at the Big Day Out festival in Perth, Australia in 2000.

    5. Bauhaus in about 1982 or thereabouts.

I caught them at McCabe's in LA in the 80s. Great experience indeed.

Narrowing it down to 5 is tough!

    1. The Rolling Stones - Steels Wheels Tour

    2. Pink Floyd - Division Bell Tour

    3. Page and Plant - No Quarter Tour

    4. Wu-Tang Clan and Rage Against The Machine - Mid nineties? (Atari Teenage Riot also played but I didn’t know or care about them at the time).

    5. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile Tour

    Honorable mentions:

Roni Size - New Forms Tour (live drum and bass done exceptionally well..yesss)

Pantera - Great Southern Trendkill Tour (not a huge fan but they put on a show for sure).

Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel (just him and a guitar, the whole audience was captivated and that’s rare)

  • That’s a hard one. I’m a little bit younger than some here so haven’t gotten a chance to see some of the classics listed here but top 5 I’d say Jack White, System of a Down, Remi Wolf, Outkast, and maybe The Killers or the Shins?

Wu Tang and Rage would be a great show. I had tickets for Rage and Run the Jewels but then Covid happened and it never got rescheduled 😞

Neutral Milk Hotel puts on a good show! The whole band was there when I saw them though.

My only regret is that it was outdoor during the day - I think darker and more claustrophobic would have made it even better.

100%. The first time I heard Downward Spiral in full it blew my mind. The title track has an atmosphere that I haven’t heard in any other song yet. It’s just chefs kiss.

What are your favorite NIN albums? TDS and the Fragile are mine but I really loved Bad Witch a lot as well. Now that I think about it I like all their projects in some way. And Trent and Atticus’s score work is fantastic 🔥

I’ve been lucky enough to see them multiple times (both indoors and outdoors) and the one daytime show that I caught was by far the worst. Daytime is really not great for any band that relies on massive stage production/lighting, IMO.

Agreed. The Killers and Coldplay both had elaborate things going on and I can’t imagine that working in the day time. That’s one of the reasons I don’t like festivals much but sometimes that’s the best/only way to see some bands.

I’ve also seen Neutral Milk as a band…and it was good too but, there was a magic to the solo performance that really stood out.

This was really my first experience with so-called world music. It really opened my eyes to a whole sphere of sound that I wasn’t at all familiar with. All at once I wanted to know everything about berimbaus and doussn’gounis!

Oh I’m sure! Some of the acoustic cuts of ITAOTS are amazing. Two Headed Boy was probably great huh?

Apparently RAGE kinda got tired of touring and disbanded temporarily again or something like that. I’m sure at least Run the Jewels will be back soon. Killer Mike is playing in my town this month I believe.

SOAD was fantastic. It was right before Hypnotize came out so I got to see them run through the whole catalogue. Played for about 2.5 hours.

Jack White was also great. He played about 60% solo stuff and 40% White Stripes tracks. All great. Outkast was of course amazing. They’re one of my favorite groups of all time (if not my favorite) but it was a festival show. I would’ve loved to have been able to catch them at a solo show. Maybe one day but 3 Stacks doesn’t seem very interested.

    1. Butthole Surfers. One show takes the top ten spots for me. Absolutely the most intense thing I've ever attended. I don't understand what I saw. I am unable to reason about what I experienced. I couldn't speak for about six hours after the show. Unmatched and pivotal. There's the world I knew before the show, and the world I knew after. Colors, sounds, sensations, all fundamentally altered by that concert.

.11. Laurie Anderson, Strange Angels Tour
.12. Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists. Mesmerizing.
.13. Chai. Japanese girl pop/punk band. Saw them in a tiny club in NYC, and it was great.
.14. Leo Kottke. I've seen him a few times, and every time he makes me want to be a better and stranger person.

Honorable mention to Gang of Four.

  • Gun Club 84
    Butthole Surfers 85
Neil Young and Crazy Horse 1991
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis 2022
Lynyrd Skynyrd 1977 (last show of the real band)

Gang of Four is awesome. Did you see Butthole Surfers when they were still in their experimental era? I think they’re a really overlooked band. Really mind blowing stuff

  • I've attended many symphonies and pops concerts in my youth at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. All part of my amazing musical upbringing.

However, I forgot the name of the tour, but I saw Yanni live in 2002/2003, and the whole
concert was simply breathtaking! 😵 When he and his musicians performed Aria, oh man! Absolute masterpiece!

    • Godspeed You Black Emperor (2 times, by far the 2 best live shows I have ever seen, immersive, intense, emotional and life changing experience)
    • Fugazi for their last tour playing mostly songs from End Hits and The Argument
    • Radiohead, incredible memory at the Arena of Arles South of France. It literally stopped raining few minutes before the show and started to rain right after, swallows were dancing in the sky during the whole thing.
    • Sonic Youth (once with the original line up, once with the addition of the great Jim O'Rourke, both equally good)
    • Pixies (first reunion tour with THE ONE AND ONLY Kim Deal at Primavera Sound festival, Barcelona) remember seeing The Fall and Wilco on the same night)

Other great memories in no particular order: Elliott Smith, Blonde Redhead, Pavement, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine (took me days for my ears to recover from that one 😄), Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, Dirty Three (Warren Ellis dancing in transe with his violin is some kind of a shamanic experience), Papa M, The National. Special mention for Papier Tigre, a local indie rock trio I had the chance to open for on several occasions with my previous band, they were so good that I had to put them here with all those great bands)

    On my wishlist:

    • IDLES, from the few live footages I have seen, this is one of the best band in recent years, at least to my taste (they will be playing at the Fuji Rock festival in a few weeks but cannot make it, unfortunately😭)

    • The Smiles because Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are my heroes !

    • Otodoke Beaver. The most incredible punk Riot girl band currently in activity. Check them on YouTube and you'll understand !

    In no particular order:

    1. Black Sabbath 1980 Heaven and Hell tour - Hammersmith
    2. The Jam 1982 - second to last gig of my favourite band - Wembley Arena
    3. Queen - Knebworth 1986, Freddie's last performance with the band
    4. Knebworth 90 - a who's who - great guitar duet from Clapton and Knopfler, Plant and Page, Pink Floyd, McCartney, and lots of others
    5. Prince 2007 at the O2. A real demonstration of musicianship

Honourable mentions - Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Oasis, Chuck Berry, Paul Weller, Kaiser Chiefs, Snow Patrol, The Who, U2, Maroon 5.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Bob Dylan, who was out of his nut 😂

I've actually only been to one: I saw Queensryche at Circus in Stockholm February 26 1995. The tour were promoting the album Promised Land (oh what an album that is). My ears were ringing for days after but the experience was well worth it. Fantastic!

I just realised I totally forgot about Tribute, a local prog band that were so good they stole Mike Oldfield drummer: Pierre Moerlen PMG
(Wiki: PMG ceased operations in 1981 following tours of North America and Europe in late 1980. Later that year, Moerlen briefly joined Magma as second drummer. Following Mike Oldfield's 10th Anniversary tour in 1983, he joined the Swedish progressive/symphonic band Tribute (1985–87))

That's one hell of a story (if true?) beside the fact they were really something else and I saw them on several occations in my hometown, Norrkoping. Their first album on Apple Music New Views for the curious :D

  • UK hiphop legend, Blade, with DJ Grazzhoppa, Cooperage Pub, Plymouth. Blade played pool with us before the gig and then gave us a night to remember on stage. It was an epic night for a number of reasons including how we got there and then going clubbing in Plymouth after the gig until the first bus back to Cornwall.

Jeff Mills at Lost, London. Go on, Millsie!!

The Roots supported by the then little known Amy Winehouse, London. Stunning.

John Zorn’s Masada at the Barbican, London. The purely jazz version of the group, no guitars. One of the most underrated jazz bands ever, I reckon.

LCD Soundsystem, Astoria, London. Big night.

Woah I don’t see an Otoboke Beaver reference that often. But yeah I’d love to catch them live, seem like they’d be great! IDLES is fantastic live! Definitely try and catch them. How did you like their most recent album?

Great list of bands, though! Fugazi would be a dream band of mine. Pavement as well.
