Cheapest iOS options for loopy pro (second screen)
I am VERY new to iOS and don't know what to look for in specs for early models [edit of ipads or iphones]
I am looking for a second device purely for a second control screen and for loading synths to a midi keyboard auv3
Maybe some mini recording on the go, but nothing serious
Any recommendations for what to look for in both used ipads and iphones
Thanks!

Have you already worked out how you plan to connect these devices?
At ~5:20 of
Alex uses Minimittr's 'advertise' to connect em together (with a "success!" at 5:54)
Ok, so midi rather than audio. 👍
Oh yessir, my bad. Important info I assume lol
This seems like a good idea:
£25 inc shipping. (!) from Temu
www.temu.com
Been eyeing that up. Saw a Bluetooth one, similar found the same thing, on Amazon for like $30
However, here, I'm looking for the earliest models of ipads and phones I can find used, on which I can use another instance loopy pro as an auxiliary midi controller for my main device
(Not looking for sales here, just advice of model options for which I can keep my eyes peeled. I know practically ziltch about iOS)
Sorry if my post was confusing
You don’t need much for what you’ve said you want to do. But for longevity reasons you might want to consider getting a model that isn’t stuck at iOS 15. You should be able to easily find by searching for “iPadOS 16 device model requirements”.
@wim
A wonderful! Just the info I needed. Will do thanks!
You should be aware of the development in connections of the hardware. The 30-pin connector of the earliest models was replaced by the Lightning connector, which may be being phased out and replaced by USB-C. (My 2018 iPad has USB-C.) Yes, there are adapters, but those made by or approved of by Apple are likely to be expensive, and the rest may be cutting corners in functionality.
Furthermore, the headphones connector that Svetlovska mentioned is on its way out. (Even my 2015 iPad lacks it.)
On the other hand, iPads, iPhones and iPods are good at Bluetooth connections. (Mind the delay.)
Bluetooth midi is very low latency.
Oh that im well versed in lol (But thanks for the reminder!)
Upside, this is purely for a secondary touch controller with benefits. Running a ipad 10th gen as main (USBc baybee. Now I gotta find a good vape with a USBC to get rid of micros in my house all together. That's the worst part about vape addiction )
Got TouchOSC somewhat working from my Samsung to the iPad (wireless, to boot), but it's flaky as sin.
Just weighing options and sending word to friends that may have spare older devices available
(Heh, got about 8 defunct android tablets years ago... 5 worked... 4 became additional screens/controllers. One was a clock that I would put my stream on, to see if there were any issues, 2 TouchOSC, 1 touchportal, and one was general aux (quick searches, music, reddit)
I'd love to start the addiction again xD
That is wonderful news
Makes complete sense but with the bullshittery of Bluetooth, i assumed nothing but issues. I've only wifi'd OSCs (and loved stadia. Wifi control was insane when I had nothing but Bluetooth controller issues for so long)
Always looking for wifi connectivity
My experience is the opposite. Nothing but problems with midi over wiFi and no problems at all with BLE Midi. And I know a lot about optimizing wifi and networking in general.
btw, it's possible to use Network Session over Ethernet if you have USB ethernet adapters for your devices. This works very well. It's also possible to establish a single point-to-point Network session over USB cable. One device has to be hooked up to a USB hub host port, and the other to the same hub in a regular guest port.
I just tried what you’re wanting to do with a 9.7” pro as the controller and M1 Pro as the main guy.
Works fine for just general control of loops but I wouldn’t want to be playing notes over bluetooth. I couldn’t get the point to point network method to work with a usb hub like @wim is suggesting but that’s probably me not understanding it properly.
iPad 3 is 1st iPad with bt midi.
WiFi is going to generally have both more latency than Bluetooth midi and also more jitter. There are exceptions.
What Bluetooth controller issues did you have.
I've carefully measured 2-3 ms added delay with Bluetooth Midi. That's acceptable for me, but some people are more tolerant of latency than others. My keyboard skills aren't good enough for me to discern the difference.
Connections methods vary depending on the device. I only have lightning devices so setup is probably different for me. I can direct connect with only the CCK to a lightning cable out to the other device.
The mighty @espiegel123 has put up a wiki article on this. https://wiki.audiob.us/doku.php?id=loopy_pro_direct_midi_between_two_ios_devices. The key is, if a hub is needed (for USB C devices), one device must be plugged into the host port of a hub.
