Midi router apps

Hi,
I'm looking for a free app or cheap app that is able to do midi routing to external hardware synth.
I have the Korg Nanostudio keys and sadly it doesn't send on other midi channels except Midi Channel one. I'm incorporating the ipad along with the nanostudio keys in my small hardware setup and I'm can't figure out how to do it in AUM. It doesn't seem like I'm able to do it.

Any ideas of which apps can route midi to other channels to external gear?

  • So, are you saying each of your hardware devices operates on a different channel? If so, then all you need is a little utility called mfxStrip. Insert one instance in each routing out to hardware. For instance:

    NanoKEY Studio --> hardware on channel 1
    NanoKEY Studio --> mfxStrip(1) --> hardware on channel 2
    NanoKEY Studio --> mfxStrip(2) --> hardware on channel 3
    etc.

    Set each mfxStrip instance to convert the channel to whatever it is you need. Set the AUM channel filtering to only allow the channel that the hardware uses.

  • On the other hand, if all hardware devices use the same channel, you can make use of AUM MIDI Busses. Add a MIDI Bus node for each hardware destination. Route the NanoKEY Studio to each of the busses. Engage only the MIDI Bus node(s) that are routed to the hardware you want to control. Bypass the rest.

    For instance, to control hardware(2)

    NanoKEY Studio --> MIDI Bus A --> hardware (1) [disabled]
    NanoKEY Studio --> MIDI Bus B --> hardware (2) [enabled]
    NanoKEY Studio --> MIDI Bus C --> hardware (3) [disabled]

  • Cool Wim! Thanks for the tips. I'll try it out!

  • Ok I've just tried mfxStrip, it does the midi mapping well, but I'm getting crackling in the Blofeld. Then I turned mfxStrip off and let fugue play the Blofeld and it works fine, no glitches. Most of my hardware synths are connected by midi thru the CME midi pro, and wtih mfxStrip off, triggering Blofeld from other synths works fine. With mfxStrip on, I get glitches when playing the nanokeys or other hardware.

    Can't seem to figure out where this glitch is from, except that mfxStrip is causing this. Did I miss out something?

    Have accidentally created some sort of MIDI loop? Or situation where mfxstrip is set to send some midi to blofeld that isn’t intended for it?

    You might want to post screenshots of your AUM routing and mfxstrip settings.

    Mfx strip can’t do that on its own. Are you sure you’re not double routing? You need to route only to mfxStrip from the controller, not to the synth. MfxStrip needs to be the only thing routed to the Blofeld, and of course only the instance that’s intended for the Blofeld.

  • this is my settings. I even unplug the CME Midipro and just sending usb midi to the blofeld. Still cracking...

    Beats me then. All mfxStrip is doing is changing the channel number. I don't see how it can cause what you're seeing. But obviously you're seeing it, so I dunno.

    Maybe substitute Streambyter for mfxStrip, with the following script loaded.

    # Convert MIDI Channel 1 to 4
    X0 = X3

  • Drambo.

    You can sequence the synths. Use Drambo to switch tracks. Even map the nanokey to switch the Drambo tracks but its fine to have a drambo on screen for track switching. You just output the drambo tracks on a midi ch basis. Then filter all other tracks in aum per channel. You could even keep the nano key as one midi channel.
