It’s an ocarina this time: Abraxas

Abraxas is a sequence of Greek letters considered as a word and inscribed on charms and amulets by some 2nd Century Gnostic sects. They viewed all flesh and material things as evil, and considered salvation lay only in the cultivation of the spirit through the acquisition of esoteric knowledge. Abraxas was also worshipped by these cults as their supreme deity, ruler of all the 365 Heavens, or circles of creation. The number 365 thus corresponds not only to each day of the year, but also numerologically to the seven letters comprising the word, and thus to each days particular heaven. There are precisely 365 distinct notes in this piece. (Count them if you don’t believe me.)

And so: No. 365 (see what I did there? ;) ) in my popular ongoing series ‘Music Made With Instruments I Can’t Play’ (spoiler alert: that’s all of them :) ) Today, still pursuing the whole cheap wind instrument theme, this time it’s a £15 ceramic ocarina. This one:

I recorded my random tootling live into AUM on my ipad using the onboard mic, then chucked it through a ton of FX. No DAWs or other instruments used, the whole thing built as usual out of AUM file player loops, then mixed live to AudioShare. The oldie but Goldie IAA-only multi FX app Moebius did most of the heavy lifting here, along with my usual passle of reverbs.

I really like the sound of ocarinas, they have, weirdly, at least to my ears, a ‘woodier’ tone than tin whistles, or even my one cheapo bamboo flute, despite this ocarina in fact being ceramic. I heard some fantastic, deep toned bass ocarinas on the YouTubes, e.g.

I’m a sucker for deep, blown-instrument sounds - but they start costing serious money. For now, I’ll settle for pitch shifting loops in AUM!

Enjoy!

P.S: not that I want to worry anyone, but I’ve just discovered that there is such a thing as a pocket digieridoo (not a euphemism.)…

Comments

  • Very beautiful and relaxing, likewise the video.

That pocket didge sounds interesting, but probably more so once you’ve transformed it!

    Worried? Not me…

  • Nice Svetlovska.

  • The quality of tools we have on IOS now is just staggering for producing deep, emotive creations like this.
It’s “music of the spheres” quality work. You always produce worlds of new discovery.

    Nice!
Here's one very cool sounding pocket didje

  • Hey, ocarina! (sorry I couldn't resist! )
Just as a natural artist does not need to know how to create a brush or pigments, a natural musician does not need to "learn" to play an instrument. If you can get a note out of it and know your way around your apps and fx you can create beautiful music like this!
    Very relaxing!

  • Dang, this is nice. And the video is perfect.

    Kudos!

  • As always I like yiur track

  • Lovely work… there are so many instruments out there to have a go at you’ve got a lifetime of experimentation and creativity available to you 👌
