Origin of Original
I heard this tonight from the ghost of Alan Watts..
.”Original” means from the “origin”. Think of that. It does not mean, as I always thought…unique.
After theshock wore off it makes perfect sense. What do you think?
Comments
I think it can mean both.
English is not my first language so I really have no business commenting in here.
So this is what the Webster dictionary folk have to say about it.
Word meanings can change subtly over time too. There are many that when used in the context of a few hundred years ago seem to make no sense now.
‘Awful’ is a good example - at one time it was a compliment, as it meant inspiring awe.
I appreciate the responses, but they emphasize my point. Those definitions do not encompass Watts’ keen observation… that originality is an expression of the primal energy that enlivens everything. It is that energy that is “original”. Everything we create continues, re-expresses, celebrates that singularity.
The definitions above are, of course, correct, but the literality is ordinary… wordbound…. Mere vocabulary. Watts sees it in an entirely new way, IMO. At least I, personally, never made that connection.
Of course words mean different things. And “cleave” means both at the same time. But to find an entire “spirituality” deeply embedded in a word is something else. But maybe that’s just me.
Alan Watts is a false profit. he probably would have told you that himself.
speaking of origin i always like the statement 'original copy' as that is a oxymoron.
@Danny_Mammy what does an opinion about Watts have to do with seeing a deeper meaning in a word?
I guess it because that's what false prophets do, make you see meaning in something or the meaningless in everything.
The paradox in thinking maybe.
@Danny_Mammy yes, in a cult that may be true. Meaning is what we make it. Certainly something that has meaning for me may have no meaning for you. As a creator, I am particularly interested in the source, or origin, of that creativity. My playing has been called original. My ego makes that into something “special”. Fortunately, I feel the source of my creativity is outside of my mind and it’s ramblings. So seeing “origin” in original where I had never seen it before is reinforcing to that non egoistic pov.
"Meaning" is also an interesting word. Language and symbols have meaning and music is also a language of sorts, so we can't help but look for meaning in things or events or our lives and wonder about it. Is there meaning? etc..
William Blake (who I always seem to gravitate to) seemed to imply that "Imagination" is the "Origin". That's a concept I like. Maybe that also goes along with your points.
