There’s lots of Procreate threads, but I opted for this one since I want to use it for album artwork.
Question: anyone regularly using Procreate to make collage?
I find the process of cutting stuff out really unintuitive.
There’s a tool in Photoshop called “lasso”, it’s quick and easy , but the same ( not identical but similar) process in Procreate isn’t quick and easy and has put me off using it.
At the moment I’m using the Paper app by wetransfer for collage. It’s pretty cool, but very limited.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated
IMO, Procreate is perfect for collage art. I’ve never used the freehand selection tool unless it’s for sharp edges, etc. I’m still old school so I tend to just zoom and use the eraser. Paper app seems to be a nice fit. How’s your experience with it so far?
ArtStudio Pro is the closest thing to Photoshop on iOS - not sure why it's not well-known.
Thanks for the tip @pbelgium - wasn't aware of this. It looks cool. And half the price for the desktop version (£15) compared to the unlocked iOS version at £30.
I'm gonna have another crack at Procreate, but if I still can't get my head around the workflow, I'll give ASP a try.
Thanks @dogonBeats - appreciate your response Paper is very very basic indeed. But sometimes that's what is required! I like it for making simple collage, using the scissors tool. For more in-depth image manipulation though, something else is needed.
The problem I have (with Procreate), is that once you've "cut" your image out, you then have to invert the image, and discard the surrounding material. This never seems to work easily for me, and I end up getting pissed off with it, and going back to the simplicity of Paper.
I can't find a simple, step-by-step vid tutorial explaining how it works.
I will persevere.
Adobe Fresco is pretty good for this kind of thing and it’s free for the most part. There’s a small subscription for manga brushes but the rest of it is free to use. It’s much easier to use for selections, it has a lasso tool, magic wand etc.
Hmmm…
With iOS, do you mean both iPad and iPhone?
If we talking iPad, nothing beats Affinity Photo on iPad, although ArtStudio Pro is really really good on second place…
The advantage of ArtStudio PRO is that it exists on both iPad and iPhone…
Fresco may be a good app, but Adobe is a company to ban…
A matter of facts, more and more semi-Pro users of Adobe products are leaving Adobe just now (since six month there’s an wave of hate against Adobe because of their new User Agreements) - many users seeks new tools now…
Sure but the person I was replying to specifically mentioned photoshop’s lasso tool so it seemed worth a mention. I wasn’t expecting the ethics police
Right you are - I'm on iPhone. ArtStudio Pro is still worth a look on iDevices and Mac. It's stable, has a lot of features and is very easy to use. Last year they added Pigment Blending for realistic colour mixing - very cool!
Thanks everyone. I'll investigate these options
For sure, but, have you read what a lot of die hard users of Adobe Creative Suite have said about Adobe the last six month?
Sorry if you think I’m concerned about ethics…
Yeah, ArtStudio Pro is impressive - I bought version 1.0 already the first week it was released back in 2010 so I have used it a lot - the Pro upgrade was a huge step forward…
But, when it comes to advanced specialised things concerning advanced photo editing then Affinity Photo v.2.55 is way better than Artstudio Pro - both apps are good to have if you’re into pictures, arts or any graphical mission…
Still keen to hear from anyone who is using Procreate to make collage (specifically using the lasso/image inversion technique)
Thanks folks
Just grabbed Affinity Photo 2 - free trial for 6 months seems like a no-brainer.
Tons of tutorials on YT too, which is always good.
Can you recommend a tutorial that focuses specifically on collage? It’s obviously an incredibly deep app, but I don’t want to sit watching hours of tutorials until someone mentions collage 😁
I should clarify; I want to cut up lots of photos, as if I was using scissors and paper (remember them?), and make intricate and weird collages. NOT the kind of utterly horrendous montage type things that most YouTubers think is a collage.
Not this fucking monstrosity, for example;
Congrats to a great start with Affinity product!
Six month full demo is fuckin’ generous!
Regarding tutorials on YT I can recommend to start with the channel Affinity Revolution - great people with a lot of videos about Affinity. Can’t really find a picture college video just now, but, everything is possible with some imagination.

I’ll return if I find some collage tuts…
@HolyMoses I’m familiar with the issues but seeing as how I don’t give them any money I can live with myself using their free drawing app. If they want to train their models on my images then well fool them, I’m a shit artist
I use icolorama S. I made my profile pic 5 minutes ago from a photo I just took of my curtains.
Thanks for this link.
However, Affinity Photo 2 looks pretty different to AP1, and just simple navigation is a headfuck
I'm finding it really unintuitive. It's almost like amateurs/beginners are not welcome!
All I want to do is open some photos, cut around some shapes and make a dumb-ass collage, but it's not at all obvious how to do this. It's like a puzzle that needs solving...
Photoshop is subscription and not cheap, so going back to that is not an option. Might try the ArtstudioPro one that @pbelgium mentioned...
Any other Affinity Photo 2 users out there? (using it on ipad specifically)
Have you tried Apple’s built in background remover? Long pressing an image in the camera roll will let you extract the subject as a new image. You could maybe use that and then import the new images into the image app of your choice.
I mentioned it earlier in this thread that Adobe Fresco is free and very simple for this type of thing. If you are used to Photoshop you might find it a bit simpler to get your head around than Affinity.
Edit to add: if you want to persevere with Affinity have a play with the Smart Selection Brush.
Hey @FordTimeLord , apologies for delayed response, was away at the weekend.
I genuinely appreciate you (and the others) engaging with me on this
I haven't tried the background remover but I'll look into it.
Regarding Fresco, I downloaded it, but I also grabbed AF2 at the same time. When I noticed that Affinity offered a free 6 month trial for the full app, I just assumed I had found the answer. That assumption was made prematurely, because I didn't anticipate that something as simple as cutting up a few images, and creatively placing them around the canvas would be such an unintuitive process . I still can't figure it out. Went on Affinity forum and a moderator told me there's no video explaining how to do what I want to do. Which is dumb, since there are LOADS of vids...
Anyway, I'll look at Fresco again, and hope that I get my head around AF2 in the meantime
Yes, played with the smart selection brush, but that's precisely where it all gets confusing; once I've selected a shape weird stuff starts to happen with the layers.
Anyway, thanks again buddy
No worries mate. Affinity is really powerful but not very intuitive. You might have more luck looking for tutorials on photo composites in Affinity, rather than collage. They share some techniques when it comes to cutting things out of images.
Once you’ve made your selection are you just trying to do a simple copy and paste to a new layer? You may need to rasterise your original image first. You can find the option for that kind of thing here in the layers panel:
