Koala into Logic via Ableton, a pain but it works

Koala is amazing. I use it inside Drambo, with Loopy Pro to record loops. I prefer to arrange in Logic Pro on the iPad though.

What I have been doing is to use Koala’s Ableton export feature, then open that up in Ableton. It duplicates a lot of the samples, but also arranges Koala’s scenes into Ableton session scenes.

I spend a while cleaning it up, removing dupes, and resampling some sequences into single bars/samples, so their timing stays intact.

Then I just drag the loops from Ableton into Logic on the Mac, one at a time (you can’t drag and drop multiple clips out of Ableton). Then I sync the Logic project to the iPad via iCloud.

You might even be able to drag clips from Ableton to iPad Logic.

It’s kind of a pain, but on the other hand, I do this kind of tidying up/consolidation anyway when moving to the DAW—removing dupes, naming clips and tracks, and so on. And being able to arrange, and further work on a track in Logic on the iPad is great.

It would also be neat to load Koala into iPad Logic direct, and record that, but then all the instruments are mixed in together on the same audio track.

Or you could set up a Koala multi-out AUv3 session in Logic and record the audio to separate tracks.
The Koala session also needs to be prepared for multi-out by routing the pads to separate outputs.
Once the Koala session and Logic project are set up you can 'record' or 'bounce' the Koala outputs to audio.
(To bounce individual AUX tracks to audio add an empty midi-region and bounce it).

Setting up Multi-AUv3 out in Logic is still a bit quirky but once done a few times it makes sense.

This is a quick unlisted video I made for Ruismaker FM but the same applies to any Multi-Out AUv3.

The trick is to 'replace' the AUv3 with the multi-out version and then create the aux busses for the tracks.

Once the 'setup' is done it's possible to save it as a 'patch' so next time a multi-out version of a AUv3 is needed, just load a 'patch' and boom, all set-up and ready to go.

As for Koala I would create a 'Patch' in Logic with an empty koala session and 8 busses ready roll..

I guess that to save it as a patch you’ll save the summing stack containing the instrument and buses. Right?.

Yes, it's enough to save the track with the summing stack as a patch.

  • With these workarounds, I’m starting to think my method isn’t so bad ;)

Joking aside, the multi-out looks very handy, but with Koala's Ableton export, there's no setup required ahead of time. I can imagine recording a whole song, only to realize I put the hats on the vocal track or whatever.

It would be totally bonkers to export the Koala pads as separate tracks.
We'll have to wait and see what the dev is cooking for for future updates...

Can do that already! What I do is create a longer sequence/arrangement by using the drag and “add to end” feature. Select that sequence and go to the hamburger menu > export > current sequence > stems.

This will save the individual used sample pads as full length audio clips into a zip folder. I then just AirDrop those to Logic on my MBP, but the same applies to Logic on iPad (which I still haven’t tried. Maybe one day… 😬

    I hope this helps!

Ooops, somehow I 'forgot' that that feature already existed :sunglasses:
I usually prefer when possible to render as audio do the Import/Export thing.
(Been doing beta on Koala for too long so I tend to forget some things that are already there...)

  • Haha, it’s easy to get sucked into new features for sure! When AUv3 multi-out first came out for Koala my band (FunkMoonCamp) started using that with AUM/Drambo to automate effects, but every now and again we go back to the export stems method. Sometimes it’s just easier!

  • @cccampy This is a great tip! And I can totally do it all on the iPad. Really good.
