Thunderbolt vs ethernet midi

Does anyone happen to know if there are any ad or disadvantages of running midi straight through Thunderbolt from mac to an iPad vs via Ethernet? As with the latter there is always a hub in between the iPad and the Mac. The only downside I could think of with Thunderbolt is that you can't have multiple virtual ports set up like one would do with a Bome Network through Ethernet, or would there be workarounds for that?

That's an interesting question. I've done latency comparisons for iDAM vs. direct connect and BLE Midi connect, but I've never measured network session over Ethernet. I may have to do that. Still, I can't imagine the difference in latency would be at all noticeable. Probably less than 1ms difference, if any.

One advantage of Network Session over Ethernet would be the ability to communicate between more than two devices using an Ethernet switch. The advantage of iDAM is you can optionally also send audio from the iPad and the Mac (but not the other way around).
