Is Caustic 3 (iOS) safe to get

I want to get Caustic for iOS. The only problem stopping me is that it seems it hasn’t been updated in years. Caustic looks like a perfect app to make trap music and also its synth is 808 sound shaping friendly. There’s a lot of tutorials on YouTube showing how to make an 808 synth sounds in Caustic and I gotta say that I freakin love that. Caustic is something I wish to get my hands on. I have a question if there’s any bugs in Caustic like Auria, due to it not being updated by the devs. And do you guys think if this app gonna last forever in the App Store.

It works OK here on iOS 15, and I've read it's fine on iOS 16. The ftp server no longer works for me, so getting things into it is a challenge. But no-one else seems to have this ftp problem here as far as I can tell.

Anyone who says they know if it'll be around forever or not is just making things up. You just have to decide how upset you might be over losing $10 if it stops working some point in the future. Know that it's very unlikely to be fixed if it does.

[edit] I just read a review in the App Store mentioning the ftp server not working, so maybe I'm not the only one seeing that.

  • Have you considered other apps like Pure Acid that are also 808 adjacent?

Huh. I never consider time invested into apps as wasted as long as I'm enjoying myself. If I'm entertained while using an app then the time isn't wasted to me any more than time spent on any other form of entertainment.

  • As a fanboy, I would say yes
As a sensible person, I would say no, for reasons people mentioned. The dev has given up.
Instead, if you could run it for free on desktop.
Or you could risk running it on an Android device.
(I actually have on 2 ios devices, 1 android device and my PC )

it hasn't been updated for ages and probably never will be but what is there works just perfect, you can do a lot of great music with it..

never buy apps because of potential future updates, always buy app for what is there now and by default rather except there will be no more uodates - you avoid disappointment in future that way

if you like it i believe there is no reason to not buy it ..

Last time i tried Caustic was maybe 3 years ago bud never experienced single one bug. It's the kind of app which would be lovely to see updated bud even when it didn't happen, what is there is perfect.

It's not only 10 $, the time sunk into abandonware is also a cost, culminating in the day an update kills it off. There are many better maintained options, like Logic, MTS, ZB and Cubasis (even Auria and BM3, which lacks stability and frequent updates) all does trap absolutely fine. Or does caustic have some special functionality you need? Some wild boys even use FLSM for trap.

What I’ve seen videos on, I really dig it and is something that looks real special to try. The synth as well as the plugin in general is what I like. It also seems that Caustic provides more for trap sound than what ZB, Cubasis, etc. can hope for. It’s really a shame that they don’t update it, but hey I guess all apps at some point are gonna stop being updated right. I just didn’t know of how much of a bug or if a bug it is

you can definitely make Trap or synthesize 808s on nearly any DAW.

Caustic is an extraordinary app, in the same vein as self contained apps like Gadget and rivals if not surpasses many of them (including Gadget in some areas). Like Gadget one cant work with audio tracks…

the only issue/bug i’ve encountered with Caustic on current iOS is sometimes it opens on my iPhone like this:

fixed by rotating the device around portrait to landscape and back around the other way

Caustic is one of my favorite software. I recently release a track created with It and I am working on another one.

If you don’t mind loosing 10$ at a uncertain date I would say go for it. It is a super inspirational app to work in. No bugs for me.

For the FTP problem. Not everybody gets it but there is always the option of redirecting the sound thru IAA to be recorded in Cubasis or via Audiobus to record somewhere else.

Here’s my tune. Seem like a good place for shameful self promotion. 😎

Like your thoughts there. Even with weirdly designed apps with cryptic UI at least you got point ’n’ click adventure, so nothing wasted there. Just another brain gymnastic. 😅

King of Bass is my top favorite. But after seeing what Caustic does, that is something new to me that Im dieing to experience with n try. I like the 808s I’ve been watching being made with Caustic’s modular synth. From what I’ve seen in YouTube, they make some nasty 808s and let’s say if where not even talking about the 808 sound making in Caustic, the sounds and the app in general are worth it alone (if not already bugged). It has me really intrigued on the 808ish sound that can come from it. Every app has its own unique type of synths and only certain ones can make that true 808 sound. Like I said King Of Bass is the best 808 synth of all time. You can make some alright ones in Pure Synth too. I haven’t dabbled much with Lowtone and Pure Acid, but from what I’ve seen of Pure Acid is don’t have that sound I’m looking for. And Lowtone doesn’t compare to King of Bass, while a Caustic 808 might be able to hold its own and probably has certain features that KOB doesn’t have and the same with everything else. So I guess to sum everything up is that I believe Caustic has its own unique sound and features that are super Sub 808 friendly, but it does really get to me if I ended up buying an app that’s bugged out and on its way out. That’s why I wish for Apple to fix this problem. Yea sure, devs abandon there apps, but the main problem is with Apple, they need to make it to where the non-updated apps not wigg out and bugg out after iOS software updates. I still don’t get how an Apple update could mess up an app, like your freakin Apple, you could easily make it to where an iOS software update doesn’t mess up an app, like how the apps were in their prime or when last updated.

I guess you’re right about that. As long as if you had a fun time while it was here working great. But it would be nice and assuring that you could use it for life. Imagine if you used Caustic on a regular, you have a good workflow with it, your pretty much addicted, then one day it stops working, knowing you can’t use the app ever again. That would freakin suck.

The desktop option doesn’t seem bad and it seems to plugins don’t mess up on desktop like it does for iOS. But the main problem is that I use iOS. The desktop increasingly drains out my internet everytime I use it. For the reason I have low memory storage so downloads take forever and waste my internet gb in the process. That’s why I don’t use desktop. And I’m also tracted to iOS my apps, etc., so I never bother to turn on my Mac Mini.

That’s good to know👍. I don’t get why it’s 10$, while 0$ for desktop. If they’re not updating then they should cut the price. But if I do get it then I just have to prepare for when that day comes😢

It's because having a app in the Apple app store cost a yearly fee.

I believe when he shutdown the project that's when he gave away the PC version free.

  • @ecou said:

    yup, $99/year

As soon as app is still in appstore at least you know developer is still alive paying dev program subscription 😄

    yup, $99/year

I wish Apple would drop that fee. Free dev access would pave the way to more free and open source apps on the app store. And it would encourage retiring developers to make their project a community project.
That would help abandonware like Caustic getting a new lease of life.

  • Actually there are a few apps that cost nothing on desktop.
Caustic, Nanostudio 1, Nodebeat, Borderlands (if I recall correctly) and all of Zolotov's apps (Sunvox, Pixitracker, VirtualANS, QuantumVJ, etc)

Maybe some more, but those are the ones I remembered now

I haven't read this whole thread, so maybe what i say below has been pointed out already but...

You want to buy apps that last for life? There is no guarantee of such happening, unless you plan on dying soon. Any AUV3 app you own today may be so frustrating to use after a month or two that you will abandon it. On the other hand there are many years-old apps that are IAA, have not been updated in a long time, and sound better and work more reliably than many AUV3 apps.

I bought a Euclidean synth app recently from a prolific developer who turns out programs regularly. It crashes regularly, in fact all the time. It now looks like the app was an afterthought, since it has not been updated in 8 months. Meanwhile the dev has kept putting out new apps while letting this one fade into obscurity. Personally, I would rather spend 20 bucks on something widely described as one of the best iOS music apps of all time, than any amount on a new app that may turn out to just be wasting your drive space, by which time it may be too late to return it. I do not care that its parameters are exposed.

I also think with the rate at which all tech is improving, it's unlikely ANY synth in AUV3 form you get today will still be cutting edge in 10 years. I could be wrong. But I think it's at least as safe a bet as the bet that the next iOS will not let IAAs run. Which people have been predicting year after year...

I buy IAA apps still. Some just have no equal among currently stilll-updated offerings, IMO. Just IMO, though.

The scenario is very different here. The Caustic dev as abandoned the app for 6 years now. It is public knowledge that he is done.

In the case of Euclidean synth, 8 months is not that long. If the dev as no reason to update, he won't make a update for no reason if he considers the app complete.

Have you reported the problem ? He may not be aware of the problem.

  • Caustic its a very powerful app, actually it was the app that got into mobile production which i started on Android so its also the app that got me into getting an iphone for mobile production,
anyway almost everything works in Caustic except when the mixed down into wav ,, because when you do convert the project into wav or into the other options and you listen to the wav, some the sounds that was included in the project will be there or distorted, specifically if you use the subsynth, plus sometimes it will cut some tracks sounds out and in, on the wav which means that the only way you can record the final project properly, its through the screen recording

You must be talking about Cem Olcay's app? If you tell him, and give him details, I'm sure he'll fix it, if it doesn't get fixed within a reasonable amount of time you should let people here know that it might be a risky purchase.

4pockets one wasn't a synth though! That's more a midi fx. Unless the op just carelessly referred to it as a synth?
