One my all time favs as well. This tune was a struggle, years in the making, many variations and directions, but I finally made it there!

I've only seen him once live, in an acoustic setting. But this is more of a celebration of his electric side.

  • Very well done, indeed.

  • Excellent. I see you found a harmonica soloist. My mind went to Buffalo Norton and the other blues players that would cup one of those classic radio era mics to get that special metallic distortion tone.

The Rhodes solo was nicely executed. I’m sure you took a lot of swings at bat. You generally do to reach your standards.

I bought it to show support for your continuing inspiration as a self-producing artist.

That was the real tribute, sound and vibe of that harmonica tearing my soul apart in a good way ;). Rhodes' entrance tried to save us but instead only intensified the already fantastic grove. Thanks for sharing, it was wonderful! 🤩

  • Wow! Well done! :)

  • Well, that was fun-ky! Brilliant!

Thanks! I don't know how he tracked it, but it took about 10 plugins to get that exact tone!

Actually, that part of it came fairly easily for a change. Was just a matter of getting in the right mood and then it just kinda came to me in a take or two. Originally, it was going to be a collaborator (who shall remain nameless, since we still might work on something else in the future). Said person claimed to be good at doing fake harmonica with a synth, but that never ended up happening. Then I wanted said person to do Rhodes, and that never happened, so ended up doing it my damn self. Then I spent a couple of weeks learning to do great fake harmonica on synth/keyboard and that was going well, but eventually realized that hiring a real harmonica player might be the answer..

I bought it to show support for your continuing inspiration as a self-producing artist.

Thanks so much! Any contributions/purchases through Bandcamp are especially appreciated on this one, to help recoup the cost of hiring the harmonica player. It meant deficit spending, but worth it! REAL harmonica player has made all the difference. This guy is fantastic! So much so that I felt obliged to TIP him on top of his usual fee. Any support from anyone in recouping those costs would be wonderfully helpful. But if not, that’s cool too. Always FREE to listen! Thanks everybody!

  • Outstanding! Really captures the Herbie vibe. I can tell you put a lot of time and thought into this. I kept waiting for the chord change… and there it is at 2:25. Very smooth. Great track!

Thanks! Yeah, just daunting to take on such a giant, so I wanted to get it right.

What? Does it take THAT long to get to the bridge? Lemme see... Looks like the bridge comes in abt 1:35 (a little later in the video, because of the added animated introduction).

  • Speaking of video, Herbivorous is now available on Youtube:

  • The long-awaited Harmonica solo was excellent but then again it all was 🙏
Loved the sound bites at the end 🥦

Yes, I couldn't be happier with the harmonica player I found. Pretty much everything I was hoping for. Cost me some bucks to hire someone, but worth it for the end result, I think!

Another long time Herbie fan here. My first exposure to him was Olliloqui Valley on a Blue Note compilation when I was a teenager trying to get into jazz.

Very enjoyable tune - don’t think I’ve ever heard harmonica in Herbie context (although I can imagine Stevie playing it at some point on some collab) but it works really well here. Drums sound wicked too.

Thanks! Yes, the idea for harmonica comes from “Steppin' In It” from the Manchild album, which does indeed feature Stevie Wonder on chromatic harmonica! The drums are based around a drum loop sampled from Palm Grease. Those Headhunters albums were massively influential for me. Wore out my copies on vinyl and 8-track! The Blue Note, acoustic Herbie, is of course a whole other side of Herbie.

  • Brilliantly put together ! You funk, Lady !
