I Left My Heart In San Francisco

Tony Bennett 1926 - 2023, RIP.

Comments

  • I played that so many times. Still love it.

  • Did you pull this together in a day? Or is this something you have been playing for a while? Lot’s of clever guitarisms in here with harmonics and extended harmonies… switching between chords and quick runs. A technical tour de force. Impressive. Is that a classic jazz arch-top like the jazz masters played?

Have you followed the story of Barney Kessel’s guitar and what his widow did with it? And what the receiver did when he got it?

Wow, that’s some jazz right there. Great playing, great tribute. This is the track of his I always loved the best:

    Such a dark, dark song…

  • Wow! That was pretty amazing!

  • Nice solo guitar version. Oh I miss him so much! What an amazing man and amazing career on many levels. The gold standard of "class act."

  • Greeting from the San Francisco Bay Area! Come get your heart.

  • Some great playing around here! Bravo !

  • This is such an excellent interpretation of a timeless classic. Very well done! I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at Ravinia many years ago. I was just him, a piano player, and a bass player. At one point he walked up to the edge of the stage and sang without a microphone to about 3000 people. What a voice! My wife says it was the second most romantic evening of her life!

Tony treated the lyrics and his audience like a lover. I’m not surprized he made your wife feel it. Now about that first night of romance: is there some music in retelling that tale?

  • Nice rendition and tribute! RIP Tony!

Yes, but it’s private. It was also the most romantic evening of my life, too.

  • Man I left SF a year ago and luckily I got out alive. That place has turned into Libya. Actually even worst! I was just thinking this morning how devastated I am knowing I have to go back there to get some things out of my safe deposit box. Such a great city that the left, woke, politicians destroyed… Well. The people got what they asked for… RIP Tony and RIP SF.

A gentleman that I work with has a son living in SF. He returned from a visit a few weeks ago and had several horror stories about the state of affairs there. In addition to the filth and complete moral decay, he told me that people were leaving their cars unlocked with the windows down and the trunk open to deter drug addicts from breaking into their cars. I hope people “wake” up. It may already be too late.

SF is an early warning indicator of a potential future. What would you do to solve the problem. Most cities put homeless on busses and just drive them far away in the dead of night. As the wealth continues to travel up the food chain and never “trickle down” and people want less and less government we will see more and more cities slide into populations of the homeless and drug addicted. California wins as a target primarily due to the weather. It’s just a function of proximity to the ocean.

Home prices in California continue to escalate pricing out the first time buyers and attracting global investors to purchase inventory. I’ve been thinking this trend is unsustainable but it’s just continues to climb with average home prices exceeding $1M and salaries failing to track this trend.

Anyway… people have been pointing fingers at California for decades and honestly, it’s a great place to live if you choose your location carefully.

My sister-in-law and her husband, a retired fireman, live on a small ranch in the mountains of CA with their little girl, Olivia. That’s a long sad story with a happy ending… so far. I adore her. She’s the one that came up with Paulieworld. We have all been talking about moving. I will need to make a decision pretty quickly. Recent laws passed here have sent a strong sell signal. I thought I chose wisely, 30 miles west of Chicago, but I see it coming. There was a mass shooting in Willowbrook recently. Sounds like a nice leafy green, sleepy little suburb, right? It was. About the worst thing that happened there was Resurrection Mary.

I can also see the trend. You will own nothing and you will like it. But hey, we will all get McDonalds delivered by drone, and we’ll be stars on TikTok.

What would I do to change it? Pray for the best, but prep for the worst. Mostly pray at this stage.

On a lighter note, did you listen to my non-genred song?

  • Thanks for listening @colorsinspace @Paulieworld. I had no idea about the problems in SF - where's the help when you need it?

  • Great job with this classic. Really nice playing! I didn’t know he had passed away until on a gig the audience kept calling out for this song and we learned he had died. We played it, and the audience joined in singing it. RIP Tony.

Have you followed the story of Barney Kessel’s guitar and what his widow did with it? And what the receiver did when he got it?

Not my favourite Tony Bennet song, I did 3 takes (beers) and this one was the last. It's played on my Strat through the Nembrini Cali Reverb, which is very dark even with the bass on zero giving that mellow tone.

I didn't know about Barney's guitar, so did a search. Is there more to the story?

  • Thanks for listening @Svetlovska, I prefer The Good Life, too. But, I think my favourite would have to be this one.

  • Thanks for listening @Franketti @AlterEgo_UK @Lady_App_titude @johnfromberkeley @JanKun @Edward_Alexander @Dav.
Feels like the end of an era, so, more tributes would be good - I'd be happy to collaborate.

I actually have one of Bruce Forman’s old guitars.

  • Beautiful interpretation, technique, feeling, tone etc etc 🙏

Sweet! What guitar is it? (Sorry, for the late reply, missed it.)

Ibanez FG100. Bought it in Carmel, CA around 1993 or so.

  • After this song I could leave my heart in your San Francisco no doubt about it but I can't, I need to go to Dubrovnik to pick it up first. ;) Great song, you get yourself another fan. 🤩

Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous. The subject matter doesn’t matter at all when you’re picking up the zone.

Nice guitars - not this one? (Great playing in this video!)

  • Thanks for the kind comments @LinearLineman @Luxthor. 'I Left My Heart In Dubrovnik' could be a great song - definitely a more challenging rhyme.
