Recognizing Misinformation (an Academic Quiz)

edited July 2023 in Other

Not sure where a post like this sits in the new AB Forum, but in previous furious Off-Topic debates, it became obvious that many members regarded different news outlets with varying degrees of trust and suspicion.

The quiz below is from an academic study meant to gauge media literacy. So far, the results suggest that younger people are far more susceptible to misinformation, which seems counterintuitive to me.

An article detailing the study from the Neiman Lab at Harvard.

And this is a link to the study itself.

    Yay me!

  • showing off:

Of course according to some this is just a sign that I've been brainwashed by the mainstream media 😛

  • edited July 2023

you passed the test, nothing to worry about. you can go back to watching youtube now.

  • i find that the folks defining misinformation are themselves in the business of (rather subtle) misinformation thus the whole debate no matter the academic credentials is all very misinforming. it's become a modern era tool for labeling much inconvenient for power. certainly the misinformation overlords at FB and other outlets, misinformation is just a euphemism for stuff they'd rather not be shared. so hunter biden's laptop was supposedly misinformation. vaccine injuries being a real thing, misinformation, ukraine has neonazi brigades, all misinformation,,, (not!). . the TLDR of such an article is thus, "if you're stupid you believe sources that are not reuters endorsed, whereas clever people trust NPR/BBC, young stupid people are using the internet and we have less control of that than we used to so we need you all to come back to the one and only state sponsored truth",. i start from a position of zero trust in all state and corporate media outlets, and have somewhat more faith in the independent research that follows in the tradition of the Robert Fisks and John Pilgers of this world, cross referenced against those same state media from different continents, RT, Telesur, South China Morning Post are all equally brilliant and terrible just as BBC and NPR are. Guardian, Washing Post (pentagon mouthpiece) terrible. Much more useful as independent voices, Declassified, Grayzone, Electronic Intifada, Caitlin Johnstone, Eva Bartlett, Pepe Escobar, Glenn Greenwald albeit the Intercept is now I would suggest discredited as controlled oppposition. etc etc etc.
    Anyway

  • I mean, seriously, dude. You didn't even look at the article, let alone the study, before you put your trusty axe to the grindstone.

  • True solipsism. Everything is misinformation so nothing is misinformation.

    Well, the “TLDR” was accurate.
Shame about everything that followed those four letters.

Makes you wonder how the top 2% get extra credit, doesn’t it? Probably slipped the grading system a sawbuck.

How much is a sawbuck? Why Is a $10 Bill Called a Sawbuck? A sawbuck or sawhorse resembles "X," which is also the Roman numeral for "10." The first $10 bills issued by the U.S. government in the 1860s prominently featured the Roman numeral 10; the huge Xs looked like sawbucks' side. So "sawbuck" became a way to refer to a 10-dollar bill.

    Thanks! I didn’t know that.
I always assumed it was carny lingo, but I always assume everything derives from carny lingo!

However, while I was going through it I tried to think if I know anyone who would give the opposite answer. Sadly I could think of a lot of people who have indicated they believe the opposite to me for some of the questions…

  • BTW, if the above test result is 0/20, at this time, words like Keyerror and python are displayed in my environment.

On second thought, what I did (0/20 score) is annoying to the test organizers because this test is probably serious.
(Having said that, it is quite possible I took the test seriously and as a result my score was 0/20.)

You don’t half post rubbish. I see Mis, Dis and Mal are still delusional.

Your MSM just tried smearing RFK Jr. with the same playbook used on Jeremy Corbyn here in the UK.

Sooner or later reality crashes in, the lies the MSM sells become apparent.

Absolutely agree. The ACLU at one time defended free-speech, not because they agreed with that speech, but because that is the nature of free-speech.

  • @ExAsperis99 I wonder if Yara Kyrychenko and associates have an agenda. Just a simple search suggests YES.

    Stop it playing Big Brother.

  • I got 17/20. As an ex-journalist in "mainstream media" I'm a little disappointed in myself.
Also, as an ex journalist (national media in two countries) I'm a bit upset that no one ever asked me to manipulate the masses. Instead, they let me write facts, except when I did clearly labelled opinion pieces. I'd have loved to take part in mass manipulation for the mysterious overlords, but never got the chance. Sob.

There’s enough around these days, so you may yet get your chance to be little brother.

  • I'm not so familiar with American issues so only got 16/20, or perhaps I'm just more guillable.

  • I got 18, which I'm relatively happy about. I'm really not sure how likely this survey is to be accurate though (I haven't read the article about it yet tho)

Yes, the ACLU does defend Free Speech as outlined in the First Amendment. However, their job does not include ensuring that any yahoo with an opinion is provided a platform. That is not their purpose. Or the purpose of the First Amendment.

It’s funny you talk with anyone they all have opinions, only using reasoning can you formulate what you decide is correct, not by suppressing opinions. That’s free-speech. Just like the MSM tries to suppress the opinions of that ‘yahoo’ RFK Jr. because that isn’t working on to plan B smearing.

  • And for all the intellectual prowess the ‘mis-information’ spotters possess, it’s amazing they can’t even spot ‘information’ thus reading and abiding by the forum rules. :D :D :D

Possible of course, but now he knows.
But I thought it was visible until you dismissed it?
