To know, but to do nothing - a koala sampler drone thing.
Basically I’m depressed about climate change. The heat where I live has been unbearable and I can’t imagine what it will be like in the future. Anyway. Shell knew, we all knew but we didn’t do anything. From this place I made this “song” the video is from the infamous shell video from the early 90s.
It’s mostly a bunch of samples from the Benjolin plug in for Audulus resampled and messed with.

Hey man, been there! Was actually a major reason after graduating with a sculpture degree that I got back into music. Far less physical waste manifested, and that made me feel better about my place in regards to climate change and similar points of contention.
On the music: sounds really good. Can really feel the angst in it. The pad change around 2/5ths of the way in is beautiful. Thank goodness for Koala Sampler!
Heavy dread. But impressive. Saying I ‘like’ it doesn’t seem adequate, or appropriate. But it is powerfully felt here. And that title is an on point condemnation.
Hey! Thank you. Yeah, the existential dread is real. Thank you so much for listening and reaching out, let’s just hope someone in power does something. I’m not holding my breath.
Thank you madame, I am honored you took a listen thank you. Xx
Been living in Japan for 7 years (I am originally from France).
Been going through the biggest heatwave I ever known in my life even though I used to live in Thailand !. In average 36°C for the last 2 weeks and today we just hit 39°C...
I can definitely relate to this. I have been living with this permanent background of eco anxiety since 2018. At the beginning it made me feel so emotional that it had a strong impact on the way I lived, the way I perceived society around. At a point I was so mad at myself, everyone around, my generation and any previous generations that I was keeping to a minimum any sort of social interactions. Not a good idea...
What "saved" me, was to talk to friends who had the same level of anxiety, verbalise things and exchange. And change what I could change in my own lifestyle so that I could minimise at my very tiny level my impact on climate change. We need a global paradigm shift and global measures. unfortunately it doesn't seem to be where we're heading. I like to compare the current situation to someone driving a car, blindfolded. You know something's wrong but you don't stop the car, instead you make small holes in the blindfold and step on the gas, because man, you're late...
But late for what ?
The change cannot come from individuals but at least making changes in your lifestyle will make you feel that at least you played your part the best you could (reduce or even better stop eating meat and reduce private transports as much as you can). Then, whenever you can, try to bring awareness around you. The climate change as a conceptual word finale made its way to the collective subconscient. But people only react when they're directly affected. We should all be aware that getting food and water will be harder and harder and it is going to happen very soon. My guess is that instead of holding hands and act together, people with buy guns because that's what makes them feel safe.
But speak up like you did with this track. Many people will hate you for hearing the things they already know but don't want to hear. Many will nod in agreement but then ignore the minute after. Then some will deny the evidence. Even 80 years after, there are still people denying the existence of Nazi gas chambers, so there is a long way ahead... And so little time...
But there will be people listening too! Whenever you're going down, please feel free to PM. I'd be happy to exchange with you. And keep on creating. As many others in this forum, I am a fan of your music. Creation is a cathartic way to cope with uncontrollable things in our lives. You're not alone! Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven!
Thanks @JanKun you are completely right about all of it dammit. We tried and we try, but it’s like spitting in the wind. We have been greenwashed to and gaslighted, made to think it’s us who are at fault. But it isn’t our fault really, we are just consumers right? Just batteries for the huge consumption machine. We have been indoctrinated for our whole lives, we exist to buy and now we are being told it’s us who are the problem. Well of course we are in part to blame, but if we were given better alternatives, if our politicians weren’t in the pockets of the oil companies, maybe things would have been different?
I was listening to a podcast where they were talking about how people in a disaster are much more humane and compassionate than we expect. This is my hope, maybe we can build some smaller communities and take care of each other. I hope the Hollywood depiction of the end of the world is wrong.
Thank you for this message, for the offer to talk and for the kind sentiments. Big big hug from Italy xx
Nice !

Ascribing "fault" is a waste of time. While it is true that a large amount of indoctrination and reinforcement has us in a constant consumption/waste cycle, the minute we recognise what is happening much (if not all) of that responsibility falls to us. Supply follows demand, and everything we choose to consume reinforces that particular supply.
We can each make changes in our lives that, if repeated by the majority of the population(s), could really turn things around. The issue is that most won't make the changes, deferring to blaming BIG CORP. etc. and just continuing to do the same thing. There is no one Goliath and we need millions (Billions, even) of Davids/Davinas to take 'em all on.
Unfortunately, the amount of people who will complain is exponentially greater than the amount who will act. And it's understandable. The only way it works is for people to live in a way that they'd want the world to become, despite the fact that most around them will not, and that unfortunately our solo efforts will have seemingly little to no effect. Because the alternative, and the norm, is to wait for others to go first.
Anyone interested in making those changes might consider auditing their lives, with regard to consumption and wastage patterns. @JanKun already pointed to reduction of meat consumption, which, along with the dairy industry, are big ticket items when it comes to ecological destruction. And while I used to be focused on trying to get others to go vegan, I know it's too far for most. However, if the goal is environmental then 100% veganism is not necessary. But wholesale reduction, by the majority of the word's populations, could really turn this whole thing around.
Other considerations are how we buy and use clothing, tech, transport etc. There're most likely many ways we can each shave more and more off of our singular and collective footprint(s) to help ease the burden on our planet.
I know what you mean, but it feels hopeless, we’ve been a one car family for the last 5 years, my wife sells vintage clothes so I haven’t had to buy new for as long as I can remember, I don’t believe in buying technology new so all that is second hand. I work from home, we limit the amount of meat we buy/ try to buy as much food at 0 km as possible, we even clean up the beach a little bit bit every winter. We try to teach our kids about waste , but honestly it’s not their generation that’s the problem, it’s their grandparents who still buy loads of useless crap just to fill up their lives, or go shopping in h&m or whatever.
But look at how the media has demonized ‘Just stop Oil’. it seems like it’s just an unbearable struggle trying to change things at a grassroots level. Wankers still buy SUV cars ( as we have spoken about before I’m sure).
Maybe I just want someone to start some kind of army and I can join that
I'd like to be able disabuse you of that notion. But I can't. Wish I wasn't around to see it, but the alternative to making sure I'm not is to just keep doing the best I can, and trying to not get lost in the mire of it all.
You seem to be doing what you can do, and hopefully there are enough like you who instil such values in their children.
Either way, try to let go of what you can't control before it completely controls you (And yeah...I realise it's easier written than done).
Edited to add: To be clear, I'm not suggesting not to put extra energy into 'the fight'. Was just trying to address the overwhelm aspect.
@sevenape @el_bo
I think that it is generally true that people are more caring for each other during a disaster. But we're not talking about the kind of sudden event causing terrible damages in a short period of time. Climate change is something that has been happening from the beginning of the industrial era and started really slowly. It is like a fraction of a second at the earth/universe scale but at the human life scale, at least until now, the effects of global warming were not obvious. From now on, we'll witness more and more regular natural disasters like torrential rains with flash flooding, devastating fires etc... During those episodes, I don't doubt that we'll see compassionate people helpful to each others. But then we'll soon see huge flux of climate migrants. Italy recently elected a fascist. France is very likely the next on the fascism list in 4 years. If I am not mistaken, fascism and immigration haven't mix very well in recent history, I don't see much space for compassion in this equation...
But the biggest concern is the inevitable shortage of food and water that's coming. Confine a group in a space with limited amount of food and water and see if compassion wins...
I am sorry, I sound very pessimistic and I truly hope I am wrong, but...
It doesn't mean that we should give up... Anyone who has gone through the painful stage of awareness of the issues at stake, and decided to change their lifestyle is doing something constructive. Once again, spread the word around without being accusing. It is very difficult and there are times of hopelessness. For exemple, at the time of writing, this thread had 138 views and not much comments... Anyone really concerned about those questions and who tried to change something at an individual level would have joined the conversation... Feels like the fight is already lost... Some will say our technology will save us. May they be right ! hoping we'll get fusion energy sorted out before the last one of us disappears.
I totally get you and yes you are right it's about doing what is in our power. Thank you for this very thoughtful post
I hope that technology will save us or, help save us, but I think there are some pretty crazy things being considered that are almost as terrifying as the alternative. The UK government is talking about carbon sinks which sound like a disaster waiting to happen if they leak. Then there's talk about sun shields or something... Hopefully fusion is around the corner but it just doesn't seem like the people in power are taking it seriously and suddenly in the last few years global warming has become an opinion... Don't look up was incredibly prescient.
You are right maybe we will resort to more wars and violence. Obama said it was his greatest fear. And it's already started I guess, after all Ukraine is the bread basket of the world, more or less...
Does feel like the fight is lost already I agree. I just can't believe we have slept walked into this dystopian situation where 90% of people don't know or don't care.
I still see people buying veggies out of season or driving their massive SUV cars, or flying around the world on holidays. Or like my neighbours, pressure washing their drive twice a week during a drought.
The trouble is, when the shit hits the fan, it's the people who contributed most to this who will survive longest. The most selfish the most arrogant, the least caring.
And that makes me angry
You're right. The developing countries are the most vulnerable and will be the first to pay a heavy price. But the 1.5 °C warming limit over let's say 2°C enforced by developed countries during the Paris Agreement was a smart move from them. As soon as we cross this limit, which is likely to happen a lot sooner than expected, they will have the legitimate right to point the finger at developed countries and ask for compensation. I am terribly pessimistic but since history tends to repeat itself, I believe our developed countries will let them die without any second thoughts...
You have all the reasons to be angry, I am too. But I don't think joining an army is a solution though. You cannot impose a view on someone. That's playing a similar game as any fascist/populist party. As long as people are not ready or willing to truly listen to climate change whistle blowers nothing will happen. There's this saying: "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink".
We shouldn't expect anything from our governments in that field. They will only provide emergency relieve when the shit will hit our fans. But they're basically too busy maintaining economical growth to actively work on prevention or I should say limitation of climate change.
Citizens have to come to the full realisation and understanding of what is really at stakes by themselves and then put pressure on governments. Hard in a world where most of the media are owned by big conglomerates, should you ask me...
I’m right there with you. It stresses me out to think about it too much. It’s been unbearable here lately. Regularly over 100 with the “feels like” temp closer to 110-115 plus 70-90% humidity. I’m definitely not built for the summer so this has been grueling to put it very lightly. Desperately hoping some changes will come but who knows at this point.
Great track though! Glad I’m not the only one still as obsessed with Koala as ever. What effects are you using?
To be fair, this thread is not titled in such a way as to suggest the conversation it has ended up with. Also, perhaps people are being careful. I'm certainly worried that at any minute this thread could disappear and take sevenape's music along with it…which would be a shame.
I would like to leave one video, though. It perfectly demonstrates the short-sightedness of not being willing to change ‘cause “well, they’re worse and they ain't gonna change neither! “ attitude. It’s this same attitude, although writ small at the individual level, that will stop people making personal sacrifices when the majority have a disinclination to do the same.
If there is a silver-lining, it’s that through the power of social-media the upcoming generations have a 'seat at the table' and are in a position to be able to help directly influence their future.
Thanks for sharing the video. The last congressman is just unbearable to listen to.
Far from me the idea to have this thread closed or even erased. I love @sevenape music too much for that. But I am also glad I found people with similar concerns here, hence the need to talk about it...I personally knew exactly what this thread was about just by reading its title, and that made me appreciate @sevenape stance even more.
I understand that the forum has a new policy with no tolerance towards political oriented thread due to unpleasant previous experiences. But there is clearly no political debate to be had here. The influence of human activity on Climate change has been scientifically confirmed and agreed by the world scientific community. Even by oil companies who knew long before governments and populations. And let's be honest, now you just have to watch everyday news to know the thing is damned real. Contesting human influence on climate change is like contesting genocides.
The 2023 IPCC reports are freely available online for anyone who wants to read.
Climate change should be in every single world citizen's mind, even on a music oriented forum because it is simply the future of our species which is at stakes and we have very little time...
Anyway, I'll stop here, I already said everything I had to say. I am simply glad both @sevenape and @el_bo are here, it makes me feel less lonely ...
Well, we do live in a world where people question The Holocaust...so...![:( :(](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/frowning.png)
I've no doubt there're many more. here. But, right back atcha![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Powerful track, powerful message 🙏
Lovely work Dan, I love the way you use found archive. If you can watch that new BBC series Earth, I highly recommend it. It shows just how resilient the planet and its systems are, and that it's really our civilisation that is facing is existentiality. We'll take plenty of others with us, species, habitats, but the whole thing will at some point heal itself. Whether any of we humans get to benefit from that is another question.
ps if anyone needs a lighter 3 minute take on the environment, I co-directed and animated this years back for Channel 4 here in the UK, we won some awards and stuff with the series, and it got 2 million viewers back when people actually had to watch telly![:D :D](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)

Strong stuff, and suitably grim.
Thanks man
