KQ Voice Plugins, Garageband and AUM - All possible ways to sync them?

I've been experimenting with the KQ Voice Plugins from Ryouta Kira, and finding them really useful for combining GarageBand on iOS with AUM using the routing feature. Here's an outline of what I've tried so far with AUM. I know there's a couple videos out there about using it with Logic Pro.

Scenarios Tested:

  1. Send MIDI from AUM to GarageBand and play and record - Single and multiple tracks - Works
  2. Send MIDI from GarageBand to AUM - play and record - Single and multipe tracks - Works
  3. Send Audio from GarageBand to AUM - play and record - multiple tracks - Works
  4. Send Audio from AUM to GarageBand - plays but does not record - ??

I've not been able to figure out if the last scenario is possible in GarageBand because the KQ Voice plugin has to load as an instrument, and while it plays audio, the instrument can only record MIDI to the track.

Some use cases:

  • Play live or record MIDI loops or any GarageBand MIDI track (from a keyboard based instrument) into AUM, and do it live, or record the MIDI into an app like Helium or Atom 2, and do this for multiple tracks simultaneously.

  • Take an entire GarageBand project with multiple tracks, record each track into AUM, and create stems via AUM recording, or do a mixdown in AUM using buses.

  • Export audio loops from GarageBand into AUM.

  • Export keyboard based MIDI recordings and clips into AUM.

  • Experiment with GarageBand MIDI loops and hear them play in an instrument of your choice in AUM.

Since each Loopback instance has multiple ports, the numbers of tracks that can be played/recorded at once is pretty high, although I'm sure latency will kick in if the load is too high - I haven't tried more than 4 tracks at once in audio.

You can also load the KQ Voice Mixer app, which can mix multiple KQ Voice outputs into a single audio channel - the possibilities are very wide, and I haven't explored them all. I was planning to create a video showcasing the app being used in different scenarios with GarageBand and AUM, but I wanted to make sure that scenario #4 is or is not possible before I give it a shot, so if anyone knows a way to make it work, please let me know, and if you're interested in such a video, please let me know.

    I don't know of a way to record AUM audio into GarageBand using the Loopback plugin. But you don't need to use Loopback to do that. You can add an audio record track, then tap the IN plug icon, select an AUM channel as the input, then set the output of the track in AUM to GarageBand.

    Enjoy it while you can. It may not last forever due to the deprecation of IAA by Apple. It could last forever or break in any given update. You never know.

    How are you syncing playback between garageband and AUM? If that's easy enough to do, I could see myself reinstalling garageband for some jams!
