  • RIP SOC.

That is one amazing song, have you ever heard the Chris Cornell cover. It’s great too.

  • Sounds like a lot of Jimi (Hendrix) and a little Jeff (Beck) thrown in for good measure. I always enjoy your expressive style. This one is no exception.

  • I admire your ability to make everything sound like it was written for guitar. I’ve been listening to your Soundcloud tracks. Outstanding! Have you ever considered doing Schubert’s Ave Maria, or Judy Collins’ Send In The Clowns. I’m a grown-ass man, but those make me cry.

  • Thanks for listening @Poppadocrock. Just listened to Chris Cornell's version(s) - watched a few live performances, excellent!

Thanks for the (very) kind comments @MadeofWax - glad to see you back posting again.

Hey @Paulieworld, so you're the one listening to my music :D. Good suggestions! I did write a string section for Schubert's Ave Maria but then switched to the Gounod/Bach version - maybe I'll revisit it. I love the Frank version of Send In The Clowns, his voice is just incredible on that take - definitely added to my to-do list, get your handkerchief ready.

  • Wow, very expressive playing, and definitely reminds me of Jimi Hendrix, especially something like Littlewing.

On a constructive note (no pun intended) I felt like a few of the pitchbends took you slightly out of tune, eg. shortly after the 2:10 mark. Maybe intentional?

But I really enjoyed this, and it moved me a lot. Thanks for sharing!

I didn’t know Ole Blue Eyes did a version. I just listened. Outstanding! I was born in the mid 50s and grew up with Frank on my parent’s Hi-Fi. Lots of great memories. There are many guitar players, but you are a guitarist!

Great J. Hendrix /J. Beck vibe in this soulful interpretation. Played like this, I feel you're taking the track closer to Prince original intent.

Have to agree with @Gavinski regarding the intonation. But I don't think it comes from your ears or bending abilities which are both great. Around the 0:39 mark, after you hit the vibrato bar, you can hear the very distinctive small string click that every guitarist hate ... This is something I also heard in some of your recent tracks. Maybe time for a good guitar reset/ hardware upgrade ? Not saying you should install a Floyd Rose though. Those are 80s worst abomination...😉

I think that your G string is out of tune.

Good job, sounds great. Like many others have said it, great Hendrix vibe for sure.

    Guitar playing: A+
    String in tunes: C -

    Haha, hope that help

  • Thanks for listening & commenting @Gavinski @JanKun @Montreal_Music. I go out of tune pretty early on in this one due to the whammy bar - I have set it up so a sharp pull upwards gets it back in tune (but that's not always the case). I rely on the graphite pencil trick to lubricate the nut to help stay in tune, but maybe it's time to risk butchering my Strat and fit an LSR roller nut - not a fan of the Floyd Rose type systems.

Thanks once again @Paulieworld. I was born mid 60's and my father liked many of the US singers of the time, Jack Jones, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, but Frank was his favourite.

If you want to keep on playing in this style heavily relying on whammy bar, I think an intervention is definitely needed. Paul! You're living in Korea. As most parents there, offer to your beloved daughter the cosmetic surgery she wants 😉!

  • Was very saddened by her passing. This was a fitting tribute, great playing and great tone!

    Great playing!

Btw this tune was written by Prince.

And, apparently, Prince absolutely hated that Sinead O'Connor covered it and did it better than him. He ended up firing his manager and a few other people as a result, from what I know. Was it also what caused him to break from his record company? If so, it had major cultural impact, as when Prince decided to go it alone, he basically went from being perhaps the most respected pop artist of the 80s to someone who got little exposure and whose work increasingly sold less and was heard less.

None of this was Sinead's fault of course, but is interesting nevertheless.

Very good sounding guitar, It’s like it speaks about her whole troublesome life. It’s more than interpretation and artistic touch. Best tribute yet. 🥺

  • Very impressive arrangement and playing!

Intervention it is then. My son is pretty enough - with his long flowing golden hair he is often mistaken as my 'beloved daughter'!

I did not know that. Interesting.

I have always loved Ave Maria, one of my favorite hymns.

  • @pbelgium: very nice…as always. I love how you bring your sensibilities to your interpretations.

And, apparently, Prince absolutely hated that Sinead O'Connor covered it and did it better than him.

Since Prince had not released a version of the song, it seems unlikely he was upset that she did it better than him. The version that existed before O’Connor recorded it was a flop in 1985 (her version was in 1990) by the band The Family...and members of The Family are on record saying that Prince liked her version , that it brought a smile to his face, and that he was appreciative of the income from her version (something he apparently remarked on to them over the years).

He seems to have had some weird feelings about her and treated her very badly in their one encounter which came after she had the hit.

The only source I have seen attributing jealousy about her version that I have seen are based on her comments. Comments I’ve seen from people close to Prince indicate that he liked her version.

He ended up firing his manager and a few other people as a result, from what I know.
Was it also what caused him to break from his record company?

His break from his record company was because he was unhappy with the terms of his contract , including who owned/controlled his master recordings. This was no secret at the time. I’ve never seen anything that indicates that it had anything to do with O’Connor — his firing his management was something that grew out of longstanding unhappiness dating back to the early 80’s.

If so, it had major cultural impact, as when Prince decided to go it alone, he basically went from being perhaps the most respected pop artist of the 80s to someone who got little exposure and whose work increasingly sold less and was heard less.

While Prince, didn't have the massive hits from earlier in his career, he continued to be a successful artist doing the music that he wanted to do on his terms. He was always more interested in doing what he found pleasing than profit. That was one of the sources of conflict with the record company. He had a lot of music he was working on that he wanted to release and the record company was unhappy because it reduced profitability to have him release so much material.

The trajectory of his career is not uncommon. Few artists that achieve massive popularity maintain that for a lifetime…particularly when they lose interest in having hits. He was a strange guy.

None of this was Sinead's fault of course, but is interesting nevertheless.

  • Thanks for listening and the kind comments @HotStrange @ecou @Luxthor @AlterEgo_UK @Poppadocrock @espiegel123

This is turning into an interesting backstory - some more digging.

  • Who cares if it was a bit out of tune… it’s still 🙏

  • Thanks for listening @GeoTony.

Took a chance over the weekend and cut a piece of my fretboard off to fit the LSR roller nut. Fortunately, I didn't ruin my guitar.
In the future, if I'm out of tune it will be completely my fault.

Wow, I wouldn't dare to do this kind of mod by myself? How's the lady doing post op?
Do you have locking tuners on your strat ?

I’ve never seen anything that indicates that it had anything to do with O’Connor — his firing his management was something that grew out of longstanding unhappiness dating back to the early 80’s.

Exactly this, it was main reason why Prince started up the New Power Generation,
the Paisley Park record label and changed his performing name to TAFKAP.
The contract that he signed with Warner was not very good to put it lightly
and he didn’t like that they restricted the amount of music that he could release.
The contracts back then were hideous, saying that the contracts now are not that much
better except in regards to the true independent labels.

If so, it had major cultural impact, as when Prince decided to go it alone, he basically went from being perhaps the most respected pop artist of the 80s to someone who got little exposure and whose work increasingly sold less and was heard less.

In addition when he went solo he simply got bad press left, right and centre.
The press slated him for writing “Slave” on his cheek bearing in the mind
the cultural bias in the media at the time.
Warner owned his imagery and his name hence why he wrote “Slave”,
so he was touring, writing music, producing artists, he was still head of A&R for Warner
and he was fighting for his creative freedom, somethings got to give.

While Prince, didn't have the massive hits from earlier in his career, he continued to be a successful artist doing the music that he wanted to do on his terms. Regardless of the “buying” public, there are more independent artists these days than ever before
and many of us were inspired by Prince’s attitude and forthrightness when it came to the business.
In my eyes that’s a greater legacy than only creating hits.

I was being brave (and/or stupid). My woodwork is a little shabby but accurate enough. String length and intonation are spot on and string height can be easily adjusted with supplied shims. The nut works great, and I recommend it for anyone who uses a whammy bar and doesn't want all the fuss that comes with a Floyd Rose. Locking tuners are essential and I had already put some on a few years ago.
