Free IR shoutout : Nembrini vs Specter sound studio vs Ownhammer
I redid my video to me more accurate to how I would use the IR in a real situation. Double tracked, hard panned left and right. Tube screamer in front of the amp.
I am using Nembrini 8180 with the stock IR vs Spectre sound studio free IR vs Ownhammer free ir.
My chain is the following.
Guitar: Schecter Revenger 7
Interface : Focusrite Scarlett 4i4
Preamp : Nembrini NA808 overdrive pro
Amp : Nembrini 8180
Cab : Nembrini built in cab vs Chowdsp BYOD loaded IR
Which one do you prefer ?

I am seriously rusty from playing guitar. This video as proved to me I need to pick it up more often.

I think for me it’s a tie between Nembrini and OwnHammer. They both sound great in your test. The Nembrini sounds a bit bigger and broader but the OwnHammer sounds more focused and refined. I would equate that to Nembrini going more for a big thud amp in a live venue feeling, whereas the OwnHammer would sit in a mix better. At least this is what I hear in your examples. The Spectre IRs sound harsh and unbalanced here…
I mostly agree with you. But on the 3rd riff the Ownhammer sound really fuzzy. Not sure why.
I personally didn’t care for the Ownhammer. So, I’m less bothered now that their website couldn’t decide if I was a robot or not and wouldn’t let me “purchase” the free IR. 😄
I voted for the Spectre because maybe I liked it a little more.
They sounds great except for the Ownhammer. Sounds like a cheap guitar pedal IMHO.
Nembrini win I think. With the Ownhammer, I have a feeling that the sound is 25% lost.
Hmm, that's interesting. I usually swap out the stock Nembrini cab for York Audio, or something from OwnHammer's R-Evolution bundle, and it has always sounded better. But I can't deny that in this case, the OwnHammer does not sound great.
It could just be that specific IR, or that specific context. OwnHammer does always sound thinner than York Audio though. I'm sure there are many situations where that OwnHammer IR would sound more correct.
The Spectre sounds great. I guess you could say that it has a lot of resonant peaks that are bringing out the harmonics? Or what's the proper technical way to describe that?
But, imagine if you were writing a song with vocals, louder drums, lead guitar, and a bass guitar. The magnified high frequency content of the Spectre IR would take up a lot of space, and it would sound weird if you needed to low pass it aggressively. There would be noise competing with the vocals and lead guitar.
I'll have to keep Spectre in mind for instrumental tracks where the rhythm guitar is featured heavily. It gives the guitar more of a ProCo RAT type of sound, so it could be useful for funk metal.
What I like about York Audio, is that the additional low end (compared to OH) makes it sound more like what you hear when you play through an amp, and the low end is pretty easy to EQ out during the mixing stage.
York Audio don't have any free options, but they do have this cab for $1.

For the Ownhammer, I took the summary IR at 48000hz. Would you recommend another IR in the set?
Agree with @fisherro @Montreal_Music @Skyblazer. Ownhammer IR usually always sounds better, but Nembrini wins here.
Maybe it’s BYOD ?
@ecou No, that's exactly what I would have done. It's a fair representation of what an OwnHammer IR sounds like in this type of track. Good concept for a video, good execution. It's just that different IRs sound better in different contexts.
I would recommend York Audio when you want your studio monitors to sound more like a real amp, and then when you have a finished song, try a few OwnHammer IRs.
Nembrini's stock IRs are from Choptones. The stock IR used here is the most versatile of the three, but that doesn't mean you should stick with it.
In terms of paid options, I would recommend buying the OwnHammer R-Evolution bundle, the $1 pack from York Audio, and one or two more York Audio packs of your choosing. That's what I have, and I feel like I'm pretty well-covered in terms of impulse responses.
I think that would be the least controversial, most "industry standard" recommendation. It's too niche of a market for there to be an "industry standard", but it's also not extremely subjective.
You can think of York Audio and OwnHammer as being like Sennheiser and Bose for headphones. If you ask a layman to name a mainstream brand of premium headphones, they'll probably say Bose. And there are some cases where Bose has had the best product in its category. But if you want a good, mass-produced brand of headphones, and you've never heard of Sennheiser...then you definitely want to check out Sennheiser.
Btw, it needs to be emphasized that what one particular cabinet IR sounds like isn’t an indicator of what other IRs from the same purveyor will sound like or their quality.
The particular cabinet simply might not be a good match for the other elements. I have the Revolution bundle but only a couple of cabinets (the dark voxes ) match my sensibilities. It isn’t that they are better than the other OH ir’s I have just that they are a match for the sounds u like. Very occasionally, I’ll come up with a sound and find that for those settings a different IR works better.
I am pretty new to using IR. I definitely have to get some paid IR. I am not doing any guitar work last couple years so I am in no rush.
Wearing Sennheiser right now. 😎
Very true. I played with the different cabs from OwnHammer and I found some better sounding microphone placement.
When I get a pack I am sure tailoring the cab for the occasion will be worth it.
But in the end what sounded the best was Ownhammer on the Left and Nembrini on the Right.
I don't see how any conclusions can be drawn from this other than just about this particular combination of specific amp tone, content, and IRs together. You can't conclude that one company's IRs are better or even that the particular IRs used are better.
That said, I really disliked the sound from the Ownhammer IR. The Nembrini and Spectre Sound were very close to my tired old man ears, but I voted for the Spectre Sound because I felt I could hear a little more definition and thump in the second riff.
(I expect the Ownhammer result could be tweaked to my liking with just some mid-range boost. It sounds too "scooped" to me.)
A fun and interesting test though - nice job!
Thank you.
