Is Starwaves all that? Is it worth that much?
I was reading a thread about apps for drone creation, and the name Starwaves came up. A couple of times. I thenlooked at some old threads about it, and there are mixed opinions, with some real enthusiast piping up. Itdoes appear that the price has gone from about 10 bucks to 40 over the last year. Wow.
That’s quite a bit. I’m wondering what’s so special about it to those who think it’s special. If the game -like interface is a big attraction, that probably wouldn’t do it for me, as I’ve never gotten into a computer or video games.

Overall the consensus seemed to be that it is a) extemely heavy on cpu b) a bit complex and fiddly and you could probably achieve much the same with borderlands and other tools
You have a typo in the spelling of the name in the thread title btw 😉
Thanks for the summary -- and the proofreading! Fixed.
For like $10 sure it’s great. But I wouldn’t pay any more than that. It can be a bit complicated, the text is small, and there’s no connectivity.
I think it’s super innovative! Heavy cpu fo sure, I bet that’s why it’s standalone? I feel the concept is amazing and isn’t as hard to learn as some. I have some idm ish vids…link..
None of this is a dealbreaker for me typically if the sound produced is novel and worthwhile, but I don’t think I own any music app that cost $40 and has all three issues …
Thanks, starting to listen, but I need to find a quieter place. So far it sounds cool, though So these videos feature only this app? If no connectivity, then I guess that’s likely
Yeah I didn’t realize it was $40. I bought it when it came out for $5-$10 I believe. I do like it and it does have sample upload which is nice. And it’s capable of some genuinely cool sounds. I usually just screen record and then upload that elsewhere to sample/slice or tinker more with it.
I just couldn’t recommend it in good conscience for $40. Maybe set up an alert for a sale?
$40 for a standalone app is a really a big ask in the iOS world. I don't think the dev understands the market very well. Well, actually, maybe now he does and that's why there have been no new ios releases in quite a while, who knows. I'd imagine this shifted few units. There also seem to be a lot of issues with his apps temporarily disappearing from certain regions' stores. Loads of people have mentioned that problem regarding Fundamental 2.
It's really a pity he burned his bridges with Hainbach because if they'd managed to keep collabing, I bet some interesting stuff would have come out of it, and with far more eyes on, and sales of, the dev's other apps. This in turn would give people more confidence that the apps will stay on the store and get the updates as needed.
I really have a love / hate relationship with all these apps. They do sound very good, or at least can do, once you spend a bit of time learning their kinks, but the interfaces can be infuriating at times, to the point of interfering with your ability to perform them reliably in real time, not to mention things like their truly god-awful preset systems, weird sizing issues etc. Will the dev maintain these over the long haul? I hope so but I'm not sure I'd put a bet on it.
Oh, I it’s the sonic labs guy. Interesting. By the way it’s now $45, it went up five bucks since last we spoke…
100% this. I don’t have the second one but the OG Fundamental and Thermo are both fantastic. Some batshit sounds possible with those. You hit the nail on the head with the UI. It can absolutely be annoying. Ironically Fundamental Origins is one of my favorites of his apps and that’s the one that is supposedly closest to Hainbachs original vision lol. Maybe he should’ve listened to and respected Hainbach a bit more 🤔
At least it had a very useable UI lol. And it's actually perfect for doing drones etc. You can also just assign your own modulation. The stochastic stuff gets a bit stale after a while, not really as exciting as it seems to be. Do you really need 20+ different flavours of random?
Wish Id kept it now, when it were £8.
Bought a £500 ipad just for samples etc ( unused though )
I think beatcutter with a granular effect should be ok
but the app would still be cool.
I think it's a great idea but the execution lacks a lot. To move things around in 3D space you need a lot more help, like various views that all 3D software have i.e top, front left and right etc. I think it's the only app I bought so far I haven't managed to produce something of my own from. Some of the demos sounds awesome but far from all. There are also expensive IAPs to get more out of the app. As if the initial price wasn't enough. If I could refund, I would.
Great ideas with subpar execution pretty much sums up this dev's output
I wish I knew why he was such a twat.
Sorry everyone, this comment will probably raise it to $50 now.
To be fair, he's not a twat. He can be very nice. Very nice and very helpful. But he can also be difficult too, yes.
Maybe he has (had) a more fundamental vision...

True that. I’ve never used those apps but they seem to have been a bit polarizing and either you love it or hate it. For the price I don’t really need it so I’ve strayed away personally.
