Which iPad model for music? (used, budget circa 350/400€)
Which iPad model would you recommend for music? My budget is around 350/400€.
I'm a bit lost in all the versions... And not sure which ones will be upgradable for a little while.
Thanks for any help

I just bought an iPad 9 64Gb for 380 (new). 64 is a bit short, but I didn’t want to spend much, and since I’ll be using it only for music I think I’ll manage. I managed 6 years with an air2 with the same capacity, but I don’t use huge sample libraries or anything (lately I don’t even use samples at all).
A big factor in my choice was having headphone jack. Only downside is still having the stupid lightning connector, but at least it comes with a great usb-c charger.
Thanks a lot! Yes, headphone jack def is a plus. I still have an Air 2, really like the design and it's still pretty ok but battery is totally dead.
The ipad9 while being entry-level (I mean it’s the cheapest apple sells, 450€ here in Portugal), still obliterates my air2 in performance, form-factor, and screen (10.2” vs 9.7” doesn’t seem much but now when I pick the air up I’m like eww)
Don't know about Europe, but a refurb 256GB iPad 9 from Apple is good as new and $409 in U.S.: https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/ipad/256gb-ipad
get the ipad 9 256 used

Hardly a problem. To not consider updating to the amazing Air 5 because of no jack is ridiculous. Touch ID is now on the side of the iPad.
With the upward gesture from the bottom, I seldom use the home button. The headphone jack I think we all agree it’s a shame. But how else was poor apple supposed to sell BT headphones?
That model here (refurb) costs 530€ from apple spain (I believe it’s not available in Portugal so besides giving money to spain, I would also have to pay shipping)
A new one costs 600€, so if I would go to 530 I would go the extra 70 for new.
But I just wanted to spend the least possible to keep up with the times. This is just a hobby 🙃
Thanks everyone!!! Think I'll try to find an iPad 9 128
256! I think 128 doesn’t exist
Don’t rule out getting several cheaper iPads and using Ableton Link to easily sync them. More screen- easy simultaneous tweaking - many more AU’s in front of you at the one time…. and much more.
The base iPad model doesn't have the nicer laminated display like the air and pro. A lot of folks don't seem to care but I heavily prefer the laminated display. You might want to try one in a store first to be sure.
I sort of have a phobia of laminated screens because 2 ipad air 3 had screen issues. Trivial but the non laminate would also seem more like a drum material.
But laminate is a better ipad in general.
go big screen if you can, minimum 12.9 pro 3rd gen - can't go back to a smaller screen, and the 3rd gen is just in spec of logic pro if you decide to go that way
The iPad 9 is a good bit of kit for the money and the headphone jack is a bonus. I can plug in my Arturia minilab iii and some headphones and I'm good to go.
I would recommend going for the 256gb model though. Always worth getting the most storage you can.
In total apple style (sorry to sound bitter) it goes from 64 to 256 for an extra 150€. I couldn’t justify it… apple should sell a 128 model instead, but muh dividends
do they all just have 3gb ram? what's the next model with more ram?

The next ipad.
Ipad 10.
Is 4 gb.
but theres been ipad pros and air 4, with 4gb.
Not ridiculous at all. The headphone jack was awesome for walking around and making music. That stupid dongle sticking out of the side of the ipad makes it so cumbersome to hold and use at the same time plus it increases the risk of damaging the port. Fine if you want to sit at a desk/ table or put it on stand though, but it really isn't a 'mobile music device' anymore, more of a portable now like a laptop.
Precisely
You have a point. When kayaking and trying to dial in a Fabfilter setting in Cubasis, the oars keep getting stuck in that horrible gigantic dongle.
impressive!
You can get a newest iPad regular model for around that I think… at least that’s close to what mine cost when I got it in the states many moons ago…
Here’s a few basic tips for getting an iPad for music.
Best chip, aka highest/most recent chip - ie A12, etc…
Most recent version, as new OS versions come out eventually older models will not be able to update, so go as new as possible.
Decent storage size an absolute minimum of 128 GB, I’d go higher if possible and say 256gb as a minimum. Even if it’s mainly for music you end up having email, notes, pdfs, books, graphics, samples, etc… it adds up fast, and some apps are very big in size.
Screen size, the more the merrier, unless it’s mostly for travel and size is an issue. Some apps have a lot going on, so the extra real estate really comes in handy.
Compare the specs of the final versions you are considering, apple’s website has this feature.
You will most likely need a camera connected kit but only buy straight from apple.
Good links @wim im gonna bookmark those. The first one is very comprehensive. Cheers.
