Song Of The Month Club - August 2023

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

You’ll know when you see it
You’ll know when you feel it
    Something’s making you cry
    Something’s gone awry

    You feel so sad
    All alone
    You weep and moan

Where will you go when you leave
Cos you say you don’t know what to believe
    What’s left to say anyway?
Well maybe nothing’s going to make you stay

    There’s fear in the moment
    You feel it and shake
    Something doesn’t feel right
    Something feels so fake

    You feel so mad
    Been betrayed
    You’re so afraid

Where will you go when you leave
Cos you say you don’t know what to believe
    What’s left to say anyway?
Well maybe nothing’s going to make you stay

  • @richardyot Another great track. You seem to have a knack at creating wonderful soundscapes in your songs. As always, your drum programming is excellent, and the Neil Young inspired solo at the end is wonderful. Great work Richard.

Thanks so much for listening and commenting. Creating the soundscapey vibe is my main aim, along with trying to write catchy vocal melodies - for me these are the two most compelling aspects of songwriting. Musically my songs are pretty simple, the chord progressions etc are very basic, but it's all about the vibe and the melody.

And I love Neil Young, he's one of my top five influences :)

  • Something completely different from me this month. I got a month’s sub for Logic Pro for iPad and thought I would try some of the weird and wonderful things it has to offer, rather than trying to replicate what I do on a desktop.

So this is the first time I’ve ever completed a track using Drummer, first time I’ve used Apple Loops (or any other loops for that matter), first time I’ve recorded my new Swam alto sax purchase, and first completed track in Logic Pro for iPad. Oh, and no vocals for a change. And it’s less than 2 minutes long, so it won’t offend anyone for too long 😂

With that title I was expecting a nod to Supertramp, but I didn't catch it if there was one (maybe just the overall vibe and instrumentation?).

The sax is suitably funky, the bass is nicely boppy and upbeat and the overall track bounces along very nicely.

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the flute and violin, Nucleus for the English horn, and Omnisphere, ZebraHZ, and Alchemy for the other instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled The Journey.

Fabulous instrumentation throughout, I love the keyboard sounds and the drums in particular - to me the latter have a 60s sound to them, and as always very tastefully programmed. The guitar break is also awesome. I do sometimes wish your vocals were presented a bit more confidently…I know you’re going for a certain vibe, but I’d love to hear your voice more upfront and central with less reverb/delay. Your lyrics are consistently very good and sometimes it would be good to make ‘em loud and proud! Great stuff Richard.

Thanks for listening - this was a bit of an experiment - I did think ‘Supertramp’ but it was called that only because I was ‘jamming’ in Logic(al) in July 😂

  • Hi guys, well here's my one of my projects out this month, which is out on promo now on Veskler Records.... Enjoy fellas...

Ah of course - I didn't make the connection to Logic the app!

  • Really liked the feel of your track @richardyot , almost an instrumental but not quite, very nice 👍
Impressive stuff @BillS given all of the 1sts… nice Sax !. Reminded me of 10 cc ‘ s Dreadlock Holiday at one point.

  • Hi there, here is a little track featuring my PRO-800. Mainly composed on Ableton but masterized on my IPad on Trinity (this is such a crazy good app). Hope you enjoy it. Voice is from Pocket Singer also on the ipad

Beautiful track.. Would sound great in a movie background... Something like Lord of the Rings type of thing?.. ;)

  • @DavidEnglish the quality of the ‘real’ instruments shine through…as well as what was done in Omnisphere, which has been my go-to monster synth on the desktop for many years. As usual you produce beautiful melodies in a thoughtful and evolving composition, that takes the listener on a Journey! Just a question- the piece seems to be in C major, and I just wondered if you tend to stick to the main major and minor scales or if you also compose in other modes too?

An ambient and classical mashup B)

The orchestral instruments sound great, and give the track a completely different vibe compared to synth-based pieces. A great listen.

I'm mostly using C major, as it's easier to improvise with (white keys only) when I'm not looking at the keyboard.

I have experimented some with Dorian, Lydian, and Mixolydian modes, as well as just intonation tunings (influenced by La Monte Young). No substantial results, though.

That said, three of the background Omnisphere instruments that I regularly use are set-up with a Werkmeister tuning. Werkmeister is off just enough to create a more interesting sound when combined with other instruments using equal temperament. Seems to open up the overall sound a bit.

  • @richardyot
Love the calm beginning that opens up to an almost ethereal feel. As usual, you’ve got a great sense of instrumentation. Fits the mood just right.

    @BillS
Wow, love the funky beat. Who need lyrics when you can jam the night away? The instruments are spot on.

    @studs1966
Once again, terrific production values. This one has a visceral feel. Incredible vocalist and backup. Cool echo effect, as well.

    @cuscolima
Moody and exploratory. Lovely singing voice and solid guitar solos. Overall, an interesting and worthy musical journey.

  • @DavidEnglish Thanks David, it was a breath of fresh air doing something so different this month
