edited August 2023 in Desktop

hy guys,
i just can't find a way to edit the ios files folder on my pc.
to edit quick my big sample library in files folder, i would have to zip or rar my ios sample folder, send it via audioshare and pc browser to my pc,
unzip it, edit my sample folder, zip it again and send it via audioshare to my ios device again and unzip it here again.
please tell me there is another way.
iam desperate:)

  • Is your samples library in AudioShare itself or elsewhere in the files app?

its in a separate sample folder.
should i put my whole sample folder in audioshare folder? is it editable from there via itunes?

No, I don't think so. As far as I remember iTunes only lets you edit files in a specific private folder of each app, and only without subfolders. I don't want to bust out my dusty old Win 7 laptop to check it. I assume you can do that.

I don't have any reasonable ideas. But the ones I do have are slightly more practical if the files are outside of AudioShare than in.

I was thinking about file-sharing. It is possible to share a drive from the PC and access it from the iOS device. All that would save you a few steps though. You'd have to copy the folder(s) over to the PC shared drive using the files app, edit them, then copy them back. For a large library this is almost certainly going to fail though. I don't recommend it. And no, you can't share the other way round for direct editing.

You could try copying your library to an attached USB drive. A high-performance SSD would be best but I've also used USB sticks and USB hard drives with some success. Then you'd take that over to the PC to edit there, and finally plug it back into the iOS device to copy the folder back into place. Less problem prone, but still probably still likely to choke if your library is large, particularly if you have any folders that contain more than about 1,000 files. If you do try a USB device, be sure it's formatted with xFAT, not the default Windows NTFS.

Copying everything to Dropbox might work if you have an account with enough space. iCloud might work too, though I've never accessed it from a PC so I can't say.

Sorry, I can't think of a single good answer.

  • It's trivial if you jailbreak, you can then just install sshd on your iOS device and then mount any folder, including your samples folder, to your PC via sshfs and access it like any local folder.

I'm sure that's not the answer you were looking for though 🥺

If you keep a working copy/master copy on your PC, you can just use connect to server (i.e. a shared folder on your pc) and overwrite the folder in files.app:

is s software for your PC that does what iTunes used to allow you to do- download and upload files into your apps.

connect device with usb to pc

You have to have iTunes installed on your pc, but you dont touch it, iMazing uses it

i edit my huge sample libraries in AudioShare, Beatmaker, SunVox, iMPC Pro 2. whatever…accessed by iMazing

AudioShare requires you move files into a file at the bottom of the list, “iTunes File Share” (the name is a theowback to the old days..) This is where you can access via iMazing.

From there iMazing can access the files…
you can move files between apps by copying to pc then into the other apps,

and play with files in the pc..if you dont have room on pc you can move stuff in and out of peripheral drives…

they may still have their free trial

  • iOS files access from outside is still an incredible mess, and even on the iDevice, the Files.app can't see everything.
Jailbreak to access all my files?
C'mon Apple, you can't be serious.

All we need is user controlled access to files.
No problem to keep all apps sandboxed but keeping the user sandboxed as well is not a great solution.

iMazing is cool because it doesnt need to go through the Files app…you go into the apps directly. This in terms of .wav in and out of the phone or pad. AudioShare has a slight bit of sandboxing, like an alcove. Even iMPC Pro 2 stuff is accessible, though in that case you are better off indevice in Files (if you want to rip your purchases). Most of the time, bulk moves inside the device work for me

  • can i edit, rename or delete my sample folder in my ios device? do i have to put my sample folder into audioshare to do that?

  • @Littlewoodg The only way to access all your files with iMazing is to do a full backup and then explore it using iMazing. Every time you want to access a file that's not shared by the app vie Files/iTunes file sharing. No thanks.

that does sound like a drag, I’ve never pushed it so hard that i needed to work from a backup (my pc couldnt accomodate the size of my ipad storage anyway.)

ive only used it to ship my sample library (40gb-ish) in and out of pc and in/out apps that allow it… as listed above, with the rest of my crushes: AudioShare, FLSM, iMPC Pro 2, SunVox, Pixitrackr Beatmaker3, VividTracker, AuriaPro, Loopseque, 8 Rotor…and others that are my main squeezes. big one being AudioShare. Typically just moving s##t amomg these works fine n Files anyway. Copy/Paste in there, rather than Move or Duplicate…but editing of the sample library, or converting bulk etc better done once sent to pc
