SECTOR - Stochastic Sample Slicer - Deep Dive Tutorial - Everything You Need To Know - for the iPad

Sector was a much loved app back in the day.
I revisit the glory days of iOS Music Apps with this one.
Still works perfectly well today, and is really great fun as well as being very powerful when it comes to manipulating your loops
Sector is made by Kymatica, the same developer as AUM, so is likely to be maintained as and when it is necessary.
I hope you enjoy the video 👍😊

  • Brilliant Sir Doug. It's 105 here (old money). I'm huddling in the hot dark. Deep dive it is :)

  • Nice! Definitely gonna be watching soon. This is one app I never got around to but have always been interested in.

  • Thank you, Doug. Sector really is brilliant.

    Thanks Doug.

Only problem I have with SECTOR is an old issue when syncing with AUM through IAA - Sector gets stuck on one slice if the LINK button is selected. It’s been broken and fixed on and off for years, and unfortunately it’s been busted for ages right now.

There is a workaround but it means resetting the clock in AUM otherwise SECTOR will not sync with the AUM start/stop properly though it will run at same clock speed.

I would love an AUv3 version on this, and especially one which takes a live audio feed … we can but dream.

Massive +1 for an AUV3 version. I’d happily buy it again for that. Sector is unique in what it does, the most musical glitch machine app with a nuanced ability towards as much or as little control as you want/need. All the other glitch apps I’ve tried are either way too random, or too predictable. Sector lets you select your own sweet spot and keep morphing in an organic way throughout a piece. Ah well, file it in the folder called Dreams, after AUM automation. Maybe one day…

  • @Svetlovska AUv3 would be amazing for Sector, and as @craftycurate says, it would be incredible if it ran in the effects slot too, for processing audio, the mind boggles at the potential then.

  • The fact there’s no AUv3 for this marvellous app is one of the CRIMES OF THE CENTURY. :D

@thesoundtestroom, @craftycurate : indeed! In an effects slot would be awesome. Ah well. We can dream, can’t we? :)

@thesoundtestroom @Svetlovska @Michael_R_Grant Can I encourage everyone of likemind to send @j_liljedahl a note to register interest in an AUv3/FX version if you haven’t already?

I did some time ago and from memory he said it was a possibility he would consider … clearly time/effort/demand/economics comes into it so the greater the potential market is, the more likely it is to happen? We can but hope …

And yes, if the dev reads this, I'm pretty sure I speak for the majority in saying we’re expecting to pay for the new version 😀

  • AUv3 update as IAP would be very very nice. I love this app and is still in my workhorse as drums or sequenced sounds :)

Would you say it’s still worth grabbing today? I’m not adamantly against IAA or standalone usage (especially with apps like Samplr and Borderlands) and this seems to be sort of in that same vein. I’ve wanted it for the longest time but for some reason never got around to it. Very tempted now though.

  • Yes, with the caveat that only you know your tolerance for IAA apps in an AUV3 environment. I find myself not reaching for it as part of the regular toolset very often, because I can’t be doing with the faff and extra steps involved. On the plus side, it is solid, and you could always file capture the output.

So with IAA apps, my bar now is how well it can be used standalone. For apps like Borderlands and Samplr, it’s easy to work entirely within the app and then export the files, or use Borderlands as an effect to quickly sample into it and then finish in standalone. So as long as Sector works fine in that way, it’s totally manageable for me.

  • It works great as a standalone.

  • +1 for AUv3

Haven’t used sector in years despite loving it, because I can’t be bothered to use IAA anymore

Yes, AUv3 and processing audio as an effect would be heavenly!

  • +133 for auv3 :D
Sector, Samplr, Borderlands and Patterning still remaining in holy grail music apps list that begging to be updated.

I remember a while back the dev for Borderlands posted something about a big update coming eventually. Maybe that’s what it was? I haven’t heard anything since though. It’s probably my favorite music app of all time so I’d be stoked to wake up to a new update for it.

I’ve never tried Sector (it’s on my list eventually) but the other 3 you mentioned are amazing.

  • This is probably the app that I see most requests for an AUv3 update. I really hope it’s going to happen.

yes, have it since day one. +auv3

More than the Lumbeats apps? 😂 (just teasing)

Definitely there were some magic in old music apps. Maybe it’s touchscreen implementation. Maybe creative vision when iPad was more like instruments and less portable computer doing same things as your PC. I thought I’m fully covered with Silo, Spectrum Clouds, Spaceraft and Tardigrain but still often find myself reaching for Borderlands. Talking about Sector it’s imho still one of the best/smartest/dopest slicer for everything. A got It for breakbeats and often used to chop drones and chords in unique way.

If it ever goes on sale I’ll probably grab it. Hell I might grab it anyway one day soon. It does seem great.

I’m a big fan of granular synthesis so I have most of them that are available. Borderlands just clicked with me in ways few apps have. Such a unique creative vision for that one.

  • Yeah, make ios music great again. I've said it before and will repeat until I'm blue in the face... Devs, please stop making apps that are overly inspired by desktop plugin UIs and by hardware. Think in terms of touchscreen and the vast possibilities thereof. Doing so is the best way for indie devs to compete with the more big name desktop devs making relatively lazy ports from desktop.

  • How do you Resample the Sound from sector? Is there an Option to resample inside the App? Thanks

No option to Resample from Sector.
BUT, Sector in AUM and record output must be a good/easy option, or use some 4pockets Neon to record and easy export to other apps :)

  • Nice.. reinstalled…
