New Video Series: Experimenting with Simplicity in Music
I've got a couple video series started on my YouTube channel, and I'm adding a new one, called "Experimenting with Simplicity in Music." The theme will be using very simple principles that underly all great music to create new music, using the iPad as a platform. This is the first episode.
I wanted to create some how-to videos that fill what is a gap (in my own experience) in creating music which is getting down to the core of what makes a good song, and what makes music work, and showing what is working for me. There's a lot of content out there about using music theory, all sorts of rules and guidelines about making interesting chord progressions, creating great sounds, mixing, finding good VST instruments, and all that stuff, and while all of that has a place and is important, it's very easy to get dazzled by the tools and the shiny production. A great song is great even when played on a crummy guitar and a passable singer. A mediocre song can sound amazing with all these tools and sounds, but a week later, you won't be humming it much less remember it.
This is a big experiment, but I'm hopeful that it will be helpful and fun for some people.

Thanks much. There's countless methods to approach creating music, and I'm glad you found this little tidbit helpful.
