TriplexSnapper by Ternär (Released)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/triplexsnapper/id6459407140

Triplex Snapper is a percussive synthesizer plugin made especially to produce sounds like snare drums, wooden blocks, metal plates, hihats, crashes and all the in-betweens, while using the same crunchy, yet punchy retro FM synthesizer engine known from Triplex Classic and Triplex Kicker.

The 6 macro controls have been set up in a way to easily morph between different shapes and materials:

  • With "surface" you control the stiffness of the material.
  • "Detune" lets you tune the second drumhead/ cymbal against the fundamental.
  • And with "blend" you can mix between the pure drumhead sound and the drum wire or cymbal sounds.

The envelope can then be manipulated with the attack, combined decay/release and sustain controls. To top it off you can of course bend the drum in impossible ways with the integrated LFO.

KNOWN ISSUES:
As of right now the standalone app does not support incoming Midi. Please use Triple×Snapper hosted as an AUv3 plugin.

  • Could be an interesting companion with the upcoming Thump One.

Why did the dev not combine his kick synth with this one? That would be the best of both worlds.

I guess for simplicities sake. I got them both and I’m a big fan so far. His other apps are very good well. Not as deep as Thump One but serves it own purpose I’d say.

The Snapper definitely got my interest, but there are so many new apps I bought, I hardly have time to explore them :# It’s on my shortlist.

Same haha. Between Gong Amp, Dagger, and the new Moog apps, I have a lot on my plate 😂 I went ahead and bought these 2 just in case it’s an intro price and I’d definitely go Snapper if you can only get one. I’ve been getting some really cool sounds from it. It’s great for experimental music too.

In what way is it different from thump one in terms of sound, would you say? And what about compared to Ruismaker FM?

It doesn’t have the layering like Thump One does, and it also lacks the various kinds of sound sources. The envelope section is much more limited (it only has one single envelope for the operator and that’s it). But imo, it makes up for it in terms of simplicity. The interface is easy to navigate, the LFO is implemented well, and the drive sounds great. I find Kicker to be less versatile than Snapper though. So that said, if you have Thump One you could probably do without Kicker. Snapper is fantastic though, and still offers a lot.

As for Ruismaker, it’s much more focused and complete. Neither of these apps are gonna give you a full range of drum machine sounds. Both of them together, with maybe 2 instances of each will. It’s harder to compare them though as I see the Triplex apps as more of a percussion based sound design tool and Ruismaker as a drum machine.

I grabbed that snapper yesterday, only had a very quick play with it, but definitely like it! And yes, the kick one definitely seems less interesting, at first glance at least

It‘s a very good kick and deserves it‘s own control panel B)
The unit is (imho) internally „tuned“ in way that‘s optimized for a broad range of kick sounds with a minimum of dial action. Otherwise one had to move multiple parameters up-down.
    Well done :+1:
ps: after kicker convinced me, I got snapper, too. Ideal for a yet unpopulated iPhone SE...

This dev though... No dev support link on the appstore, took me ages of searching around to find a contact address. Every appstore description should have a link to a page with an email for support, my god!

But yeah, snapper definitely nicely tweakable. With control over things like 'surface' or definitely reminds me of a physical modeling approach. The lfo could do with a sync mode mind you - especially in a bloody percussion-oriented app!

  • Update has bpm sync!

Was thinking the same! Any app with an LFO needs LFO sync, imo. Definitely can get into physical modeling territory though. That’s probably why I like it so much.

As for the dev, I hope they’ll make more of an effort to offer their info and some demos somewhere.

It's not like they're new - they have a bunch of products on their gumroad, they've been making desktop stuff for a while. No contact address anywhere clearly visible - I had to hunt through gumroad blog posts to find it 🤷‍♂️ I guess maybe they're one of those devs who is more interested in making apps than selling them, perhaps for their own music.

  • Ternär dev has updated their AppStore description to add a link to App Support, which leads to their website, which has a contact form:

    https://www.ternar.tech/contact/

Have asked if they could provide a better implementation for knobs - like horizontal movements for fine control, which BeepStreet Combustor does perfectly, for example - because currently in can be hard on some knobs (a very annoying issue that many iOS apps suffer from) to dial in a precise value quickly and reliably.

Anyway, dev is alive and well and responding to feedback.

Oh, have also asked for a proper in-app preset system
