"Living an outdated iOS life" ~32 bit & 64 bit iOS musing making cafe~
Hello everyone, decided to open up this "lifestyle" thread with idea that perhaps I'm not alone with using "legacy" iOS & iDevices for music.
I propose to use this thread to talk about various stuff, like, recommending each other good music apps that still might work on this or that setup, or just telling stories how you still make music despite "outdated" situation. It could be your secondary iDevice that you use in addition to your now main (and updated) one, or whatever. Just, let's keep this afloat, guys.
Personally I also kinda want to focus on iOS 10 specifically (that's the one I have) as it was the last to support 32-bit apps. And I'm someone who dived into iOS music making as early as 2009 (hell, I remember SunVox and ThumbJam being "new", lol), he-he.
On a side note, I finally purchased Audiobus 3 (I only had Audiobus 2 these years) which already helps me to get some AU3 effects I got to actually work, and on top of that I feel excited for midi routing possibilities. I was too late for AUM (now it's out of my range), meanwhile ApeMatrix is cool but acts pretty unstable for me (perhaps cause my version of it is too old), so AB3 surely was a timed-well addition for me now.
Some of stuff I use is stuff I was lucky to get when they had lower iOS requirements, sometimes it's sad when you can't use new features from later updates, but still happy to continue using what you got, ha.
Now, a very sad question. There is no way anymore to purchase app, that has higher ios requirement, to make it actually give you older version to download (that is still compatible)? Or depends on developer?
Comments
Yes, it sometimes depends on developer (there‘s no general rule).
I usually buy with an iPhone SE, 1st version (IOS 15).
Then connect with the old iPad (same Apple ID) and tap the download icon.
In most cases the „latest compatible version“ is offered and with more and more apps universal for both iPad and iPhone this approach of buying with the „wrong device“ succeeds.
(a used phone is cheaper than a tablet and as a purchase tool it only needs WLan working)
I’m currently using 64 bit apps on my iDevices as I am knee-deep in finishing a project, but I plan to soon get back to using my older 32 bit iDevices to transfer some projects from those to newer iDevices. My current album project had one piece of music from an older 32 bit app, so I went through the process of transfering it to my 2018 iPad Pro and know there is a path, but it is a lot of work. The benefit is that those older projects, which were just “first drafts”) can be finished with newer/better synths, FXs, and mastering apps. So… there are some us still using these older apps to some degree.
Interesting approach.
Sometimes I miss the days when you could shop inside itunes on pc.
Ha, cool idea!
