cubasis 3 opens every wave file
hi guys,

This is the the f*cked up bug in iPadOS (been there since iOS13) where we can't specify 'default apps/actions' for file-types.
If it helps my iPad defaults to opening every *.wav file in BeatMaker 3 instead of giving me the 'Quick Look' preview thing.
If I delete BM3 another app 'hijacks' *.wav until I remove all apps that tell the system they can handle *.wav files...
Currently there's nothing developers can do to work around this...
One a Jailbroken device it's possible to use the terminal and a few 'defaults' strings to select the default app.
I've sent feedback to Apple about this with every major and minor system update to make them aware that we NEED a way to set default apps for file-types and that there's no technical problems of doing so, we just don't have a 'Settings Pane' for it...
https://www.apple.com/feedback/
Pick iPad or iPhone etc...
I think they would be totally bombarded if Files.app was a separate entry in the app-list like the other 'apps' that ship with iOS/iPadOS
Huh, this was educational. I assumed there was some way around this behaviour that I had no inclination to learn. Thanks @Samu for the link.
I’m joining the cause! 😎
That sad thing is there's no work-around...
The 'trick' that some say should work (ie. select the file and pick 'share' and it should remember the app for the file-type) does NOT work at all and I've never seen any proof of this ever working.
If it worked it would be easy to set default apps for any filetype...
My hope is that it will some day be just like on macOS. You do 'get info' on a file-type and in there you can pick which app opens the file and click 'Change All...', from that moment on all files of that type will open with the app you selected.
(You can still change the app on 'per file' basis if/when needed).
I noticed if I browse my Cubasis folder in the Files app, any audio file preview attempt launches Cubasis.
But, if I copy an audio file from the Cubasis folder and paste it to another folder On My iPad, the File browser previews it the usual way using the built in audio player.
My guess is you are browsing your Cubasis folder in Files. Try previewing an audio file in another location and see if it reverts to normal, expected behavior.
If it was that easy I'd be happy.
No matter where my *.wav file are stored all of them defaults to BM3 so I have to long-tap and select QuickLook in order to preview them
I consider this to be one of the many iOS/iPadOS Files.app bugs...
Hmm no, I have the issue as described by @CracklePot … if I copypaste (or move) the file to another location (eg “audio” folder or whatever) it previews fine using built in audio player. I always figured there was some way to avoid this BS, but meh the workaround works, so why waste even more time with files app. I am obvs fully conditioned to the concept of ios workarounds at this stage.
Could be BM3 causing a separate, worse problem. Like it sets itself as the default audio player, system wide.
I don’t have BM3 installed, so the default Files audio player is usually the one that previews my audio files.
I find that sometimes files in an app’s specific folder may try to preview with that app, and it is annoying.
Really, the whole iOS file system is annoying, but it sure beats that old iTunes nightmare we used to have.
It's not only BM3, If I remove BM3 another app 'takes over' (In this case it was Twisted Wave).
Before BM3 I had iMPC Pro 2 installed and it was the default for .wav, I deleted iMPC Pro 2 and BM3 go 'selected' as the default and I could not do sht about it
(I had iMPC Pro 2 iPhone version installed on my iPhone 8 before and it 'hijacked' *.wav, once I deleted it things got back to normal with 'Quick Look').
This is part of a system wide mechanism where apps can register what file-types they can handle.
It's is declared in a plist file in each apps container.
This information is used by the system so when you use 'open in...' the system knows which apps can handle the selected file-type.
So in short with so many apps being able to handle *.wav files a system wide setting for selecting which app handles them is needed. (It could be as simple as 'Get Info' on a file in Files.app, select an app and 'Change All').
As there is currently no easy way to delete cache or preferences files on iOS/iPadOS it's a real pita to troubleshoot.
Oh well, I guess I'll have to live with it for now...
Logic Pro for iPad is slowly replacing BM3 for me, just waiting for it to get a bit more advanced audio editing and exporting features before I fully move over...
